Warafre HQ is pleased to announce our first Decisive Action tournament! This tournament is a three round team tournament similar to the OPFOR Challenge I we held last year for TOAW. Visit the tournament page to get more details and information.

We're hoping that a lot of DA players will join the tournament as it is a small community and we will need all the players we can get. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to join.

Questions or comments concerning this tournament can be directed to me.

How exprienced are the other players who'll sign up here?

I am just revisiting DA after shelving it quickly when it originally came out.

Don, I have a question regarding determining victory/defeat in the tournament. DA does not judge who wins or loses a scenario. When the scenario is over, it just tells you that the time limit is reached. It does not make a decision as to who won or lose. It does not tell you how many points you earned (it does not keep track of points). Col Lunsford did this on purpose. I remember a year or so ago he discussed this somewhere either here or in the DA user group. He stated that it is possible for both players to have separate goals or objectives. One player may need to take an assigned objective to win while his opponent will need to conduct a withdrawal under pressure. It is possible according to Col Lunsford that both players could successfully acheive their assigned objectives for the scenario and both would win (or lose if they failed to acheive their objectives). You may want to consider in conducting this tournament to spell out the objectives needed to win in detail in each scenario and assign humans judges to access the degree or percentage each player obtained in achieving their objective.

The tournament sounds like fun and I am considering signing up. I have never participated in a tournament. I will need to access my time limitations. Charles

Don, I have a question regarding determining victory/defeat in the tournament. DA does not judge who wins or loses a scenario. When the scenario is over, it just tells you that the time limit is reached. It sure does. There is a button for this on the main DA interface. Clicking this displays a bar graph which shows the relative combat power and who is winning. I just won a game against the AI and at the end of the scenario it says "Red has won a decisive victory." I'm not sure what you're talking about here.

CharlesPlayers are given a full month to complete each round, and the rounds consist of only one scenario each. That's one turn every couple of days for an average-sized scenario, which most people should be able to handle. If a majority of players have problems meeting the deadline for a given round, then we will adjust it as needed.

Stupid me! I forgot about the bar graph. Sorry, I thought I had something there for a moment. :o

I imagine that the players will come from all experience levels. The best thing would be for the most experienced player to take the reins as the commanding officer for that team. There aren't a lot of what I would call "expert" DA players outside the CGSC, so we'll probably have an interesting mix. Col Lunsford has also added some significant features to the system of late, and most of us are still experimenting with these new features.

In short, I wouldn't worry about the skill issue too much. Warfare HQ has always been a friendly place to wargame and I doubt people will take the whole tournament too seriously (more seriously than they should). There may be a competitive element to the whole affair, but you must keep in mind that the whole point is really just for everyone to have some fun and play with some people they might not otherwise ever play against. The pace of this tournament should be fairly leisurely. We'll play one mid-sized scenario per month (three in all). That should work out to be one turn every 2-3 days, which isn't bad. Many players may finish their round within a week. During other tournaments we've had to lengthen the deadlines if it looks like a lot of people need it, so we'll keep an eye on it and see how it works.

The bottom line is that it will be fairly "low pressure" for the new players, and although there are a few prizes for the winners, the real point is just to have a good time.

One thing I would like to add: the DA community is fairly small (so far). I hope we will see a good percentage of the players here sign up for it, otherwise we may not have enough to run it. For those who are still learning the system, what better way to learn?

Sounds good to me.

If there are a few other people with only minimal DA experience I would like to play.

I even found my CD

Great! So far we have six players signed up for the tournament. We still need a commander for the OPFOR. I would also like to see at least 4 more regular players and one reservist sign up.

Do I need to set up a secure forum for each team in order for them to communicate in private, or will e-mail be sufficient?

Hi Don,

I would be happy to use e-mail to communicate to save you the effort of setting up two secure forums.

The webpage has been down all day. I'll update the tourny page later tonight.

I must say I'm pleased with the positive feedback we're getting on this event so far. This is going to be a lot of fun. :D
