The manual states that a formation with 'attack' orders will advance 'toward the highest numbered enemy controlled objective'. However, in the 'Formation Objectives' section it states that formations on the offensive will 'advance from the lowest numbered objective to the highest numbered objective'. I am attempting to add some objectives to Fite in order to play against the PO. My question is, as a simplified example, if a Soviet formation enters on the east map edge and has formation objectives of 1=Moscow, 2=Kiev and 3=Berlin, and all three are German occupied, will it more likely head for Moscow first, or Berlin? The manual seems to be contradictory on this point, or am I reading it wrong?

Admittedly, the wording could be a little clearer. When it states 'toward the highest numbered enemy controlled objective' you should essentially read that as the "end point of its line of advance is the highest numbered enemy controlled objective."

The actual mechanics are in the second statement that you reference - the one under formation objectives. Thus, to clarify, if I get in my car and drive toward New York, it should be assumed that New York is my end point, or final destination. Depending on the scenario designer of my road trip, the objective priorities programming may also rope me into also visiting along the way, the intermediate objectives of Los Angeles, Tuscon, Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Richmond, Pittsburgh, and Albany, before I get to the Big Apple. If they are enemy-controlled, at least...;)

In short, for your example, Moscow first, then Kiev, and finally Berlin.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't want to do everythink 'backwards'.

And, if anybody viewing this knows a source for Red Army info, specifically what Armies were renamed to what during the course of the war (i.e., 24th Army became 4th Guards Army, etc.), that would be interesting. I can't find anything on the net.

Thank You.

have you tried RKKA in World War II (http://rkkaww2.armchairgeneral.com/) ?

Maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_%28Soviet_Army%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_%28Soviet_Army%29) ?

Yes, thank you. RKKA doesn't seem to have Army formations, and Wikipedia does list many Armies but doesn't have consistent details.

The best source I have found is the book Companion to Colossus Reborn by David M. Glantz. Colonel Glantz has been described as the West's foremost expert on the military aspects of the Red Army's performance in the Great Patriotic War.

Thanks ebitt, I will look into that one.

I should point out that the book only covers formation from Strategic Direction to Corps, but it does have a seperate Appendix for NKVD Divisions. I haven't found a good source for the award of the Honorifics for Divisions.

'Slaughterhouse: The Handbook of the Eastern Front ' by David Glantz lists honorifics.

Thanks! I bought it for the organization diagrams and completely forgot that it has an excellent section on the Soviet Divisions.
