Can someone who is familiar with importing icons of different colors give us a breakdown on exactly how this is supposed to work. In particular, what alternate icons are available? How are they imported into a new scenario? Can a side have icons of more than one color? if so, how does this work?

John Osborne did an excellence selection over a year ago of several different colors of icons representing different countries. You install them into the icon folder and when you are creating a unit in the scenario editor, there is a new selection as of this patch that allows you to direct that unit to a particular icon other than the defaulted one. I have been working on a scenario and I have used John UK icons and it works pretty good. I will release the scenario once i determine if I need permission for the map I used and if John will let me use his icons.
By the way, I think John would post them here is he is asked to. They are quite good (IMHO).

You don't need my permission to use the icons I made. Anybody can use them :cheeky:
Don, What I did was using an Icon Editor. I just changed the color of the icon to whatever color I wanted to use. Once I did that I rename the icon so that there would be no conflict with scenarios. On the scenario Axis of Evil, there are icons that you have to place into the DA Icon folder. There are icons that represent ships and different country units, ie Kuwait, Saudis and UK. And the rest of it is done the way Cbelva stated on how to use the custom icons.
Once you have the icons that you made. They have to be in the DA Icon Folder. That way when you use the DA Weapon Editor you can change the icon to whatever you want it too be. Attach is a screenshot of the Weapons Editor.

Can we get these posted in the DA misc files section?
Thanks for the info. I imagine this could come in quite handy in any number of situations.

I just noticed that the icons are posted in the files section on the DA Yahoo group. Unfortunately, all the zip files appear to be empty...

Thats strange. I just checked the DA Yahoo Groups files and open the zip files and the icons where there. I checked the files for Germany, UK, and French and they where there.
Anyway, I will post them by this weekend. I have some more that I have done.

I just tried it from a another computer on a different network. This time, I get a an error message saying that the zip files are invalid or corrupted.
Don,
Just downloaded the icons and they all unzip OK. Do you want me to send them off to you now until John post his new ones?

My question is this? I have done the countries of UK, Germany, and Iran. The Icons for Iran was because of part 2 on the scenario Axis of Evil. I’m thinking on doing the countries of North Korea and South Korea next.
I would like to know what other countries I should work on next.

Well, I figured out what the problem is even though I still don't understand it. If you click on the icons zip and open them, they produce an error. Instead of opening them directly from Yahoo, if you save them first then open them, they appear to work fine. This is probably a problem with the way Yahoo handles files.
At any rate I got them to work, however, I would still like to see them in the misc file archive just to make things simple.

I just added the Different Color Icons to the Misc Files Section.
There is just only the US, UK, and Germany loaded right now. More will be added later.
I've used an icon editing tool to modify the icons by changing the color and saving them with unique names. You just need to place them in the DA Icon Folder. To use these icons in any scenario you must use the DA Weapons Editor and change the icon type.
This is a start. I will be doing other countries when needed. I can also design other icons.
Please feel free to contact me on these icons that I've done and future icons.

Just a quick question: why name the icons after specific nations? Why not just call them green, blue, etc? I imagine these icons can be used with any force, correct?
I would like to see icons in several different shades of red and blue, that way I can still keep the traditional REDFOR/BLUEFOR colors while adding some contrast for major commands. Just a thought.
What program are you using as an icon editor? Is it freeware?

I don't think that will be a problem. When you create your units in the unit editor, just tell it which icon to use if you don't want to use the default. It does not care what name is on the icon. You can use whichever color you want to add some contrast for major commands. That is really a good idea.

Good questions.
First the icons represents different unit types, ie bada1, bada2 and rada1, rada2 and so on.
If you want an icon with a different color you will need to change the name of the icon to what ever you want it to be. I was thinking on the line that most players will not get rid of the name of the icons nor get rid of the original icons that came with the game. So I just change the name so that it can be loaded into the DA Icon Folder with no problems and still have the original icons.
Yes, its true that the DA Weapons Editor doesn't care what the name is for the icons but it can't have the same names as the original names in the icon Folder. The different icons can not be in a seperate folder. They have to be loaded into the DA Icon Folder. I hope I explain this good enough
As for why names of countrys? That was just me trying to associate the different countrys by color. ie green for US, tan for UK, and gray for Germany. And yes the icons that I made can be used for any force. What you use them for, doesn't matter too me :D
The software I have for the Icon Editor is freeware.
