For those of you that have run into the Axis buzzsaw in the HTH Anzio Landing scenario (275 turns long) I have a few tips for you:

1. Stack as high as you can. Combine your units. Avoid using the companies or smaller platoons. Combine your mortar units for high casaulties.
2. Dont fire offensively with your foot units unless you have local superiority. Axis firepower from their line units will wear you down. Only fire if they are disordered.
3. Use your Artillery first, then your Airpower. Try and use the latter only against disordered troops or guns in T mode. Always leave one of your best units to be used for Interdiction. (tip from Jeff Connor)
4. You have two mean, nasty mortar units. Dont let them get high fatigue. Pull them back before you allow that to happen. They will chew up the Axis troops at the pace of 20-40 men per shot. Pull them back if you need to.
5. Keep your troops in command control. This sounds like a basic rule but you dont have great morale and its important for disruption recovery and so on. Your Corps command HQ cant move so know your command ranges.
6. Dont waste time fighting on the right bank of the Mussolini Canal. Historically, the Allies didnt either.
7. Dig in when you can.
8. Use those elite units as firebrigade units and try to avoid using them on the front line.
9. The British should NOT advance past that set of broken terrain on their left flank. Its great cover and the Axis will have to dismount alot of their infantry in order to fight you there.
10. Going after the two 250 VP locations is a waste of time. Taking one of them is possible but dont expect to hold it. Do NOT advance with the Americans too far.
11. Watch out for your ships receiving attacks from planes or artillery. Make sure you dont park them near the coast. Use them at extreme range as much as possible.

See my plan at:

The red line is for the British and the blue line is for the Americans. As the battle wears on and the Axis pushes the Allies back the black line is my next line of defense. The magenta line is my final line. After that the game is pretty much over if you cant go over to the offensive.

Great Post Bill, and of course some of these more general comments can be applied to most of the games as well.
