View Full Version : Any interest in a tournament?

Guys,

Is there any interest here in some tournament play? I'm considering running some type of tournament featuring DA (but possibly POA2 and ATF as well). More than likely the setting would be the Middle East.

Some sort of team effort is also a possibility. I would like to replicate the challenges and FOW that real life commanders face at the TF+ level. I'm still fleshing out the details of how all of this would work.

I am up for it. I am finishing up a CM tourney and the TacOps tourney first round.

I haven't revisited DA with the 2.0 series of patches yet (wasn't a fixed patch to come out last week?), but I assume it'll be fine.

ATF appears to be unsuitable for tourney play as it has no PBEM and no savegames in TCP/IP. What do you do if the game gets interrupted? Require a replay until it gets through?

Hi Don,

I would be interested in a tournament. I have DA and ATF but not POA2. Still debating on getting POA2.

That's a good point. I don't imagine that anyone is going to want to use POA2 for tournament play until after the new multi-part unit scheme is released. That pretty much leaves us with DA, TOAW, or TacOps. Feedback will be appreciated. :bandit:

TacOps still has the TT2003 tourney in the first round, I think there's not much to gain at this point in time.

What I could imagine might be fun is a TOAW tourney with modern scenarios only. But then you've got the problem that people who just bought some modern wargames don't have TOAW-CoW - and can't buy it either.

Wouldn't it be great if the TOAW sourcecode would be OpenSource'd - like Quake1 and Quake2 were? Harhar, nice one.

My understanding is that ACOW is available from the Take2 webpage. http://www.take2store.com/We ran an all modern ACOW tourny a while back. Th scenarios were designed specifically for the tournament. They were fairly small and were created with play balance in mind. In strikes me that the same could be done with DA. Perhaps a "mixed tournament" that uses more than one type of wargame to fight battles at different levels. I'll put some thought into it.

Hey Don. I've actually been working through some rules for an ATF tournament, though it would be against the AI. Once real life slows down a little, I hope to post the rules for comment and hope to have something this summer (as I would still have to create the scenarios -- with Norad's help if he has time). I plan on getting DA over the next couple of months, so I'd be up for that.

This is really something I'd like to do. I figured I'd get the ATF tourney under my belt then start working on something along the lines of the MBX John Osbourne posted a week or so ago. Of course, my idea focused on land warfare only, but I thought they did a great job. The Steel Beast folks also had an interesting team tourney campaign I was going to look at for ideas also. Anyway, I'd be happy to work with you on one or both of these. Though I only own ATF at this point.

Take care,
Brian

Hey, Scully,

are you the same Scully who used that alias on tournamenthouse.com?

I would love to play, but I think that, in all fairness, I should recuse myself from tournament play.:devious: :)

No...but I'm a little concerned there's another one of me running around! :)

I'd like to see something done with POA2 once it is more stable. I am planning to purchase it here soon. Right now I am fiddling with ADC2. How hard is scenario design in POA2 (in terms of time to build one I mean)? Any kind of team type game would require pre designed maps if I was to do something like a Combat Campaign using the POA2 game engine. This causes alot of up-front and ongoing scenaio/map work but could be well worth it if done right.

Scenario creation in POA2 is fairly straight forward. Now the scenario author does have more info to input than in most other wargames, but most of this is pretty easy to do. Making the map is the hard part. If you already have that done or are considering using one of the originl map, then that vasty simplifies the process.

There will be a Decisive Action tournament at Warfare HQ. Will any other wargames be involved? We're still working on that aspect of the tournament and the details will be announced as soon as it is complete.

What can I tell you so far? This event will use custom scenarios specifically designed for this tournament. The emphasis will be on planning and making wise use of the S2 assets available to the commander. Fog of war will be a factor as players will be strictly forbidden to "open" the scenario and see what the other side's dispositions. Scenarios for each round will be sent out just prior to each round of combat. The tournament will be built around the PBEM format.

What has not been determined? We don't yet know if this will be a tournament where each participant sees multiple rounds of combat or a sudden death "one defeat and you're out"-type affair. Point structure and prizes for the winners have yet to be determined.

The full details of the tournament will be announced soon. If you don't yet own a copy of Decisive Action, make sure you grab a copy now!
