Apologies if this is covered in the manual and I missed it!
See the attached image. A yellowish-white oval shape obscures individual unit graphics.
Something similar appears on page 17 of the manual but I can't find the text relating to it.

Many thnks,

Those are completed breeches of obstacles.

OK - but:
(a) what obstacles have been breached? I would not expect to find any in an LZ and the terrain is described as clear.
(b) Which units can breach obstacles? I only have fire teams/infantry and mortars.

BTW just a suggestion, but I think the next version of the manual could do with an index.

Thanks for your patience with my newbie questions!

Actually, any area that might be considered a good LZ for the enemy is a PERFECT place to lay mines!

You will NOT see anything about obstacles/mines using the terrain description. If a unit that has breaching capabilities encounters mines, and is NOT set on "Bypass Obstacles", they will automatically breach.

Every infantryman is taught how to breach minefields with a wooden stake - even combat medics are taught to do it! So, it is likely that your fireteams have encountered a minefield and set to breaching.

If a unit is set to bypass obstacles, when it encounters an obstacle, it will attempt to go around the obstacle on its own, and will help define the borders of the obstacle as it attempts to bypass.

Even more in-depth is using the "Company Attack to Breach" mission, but that's a whole other thread!

As for an index, if you've ever tried to index something like this, you'd know how difficult it can be. In addition, as soon as you index, and you forego indexing one word for another (Because you HAVE to do that, or the index is as long as the manual!), invariably, someone complains about the index, which can add not only a couple hundred manhours to a manual of this size, but immense cost if it is contracted.

It is something to consider for the future, though! :)

Wow! Hadn't thought of that!
It all makes a bit more sense now.

Take your point about the index. How about including a pdf of the manual on disc so users can use the search function in Acrobat?

Thanks for your help!

Our publisher has asked us to refrain from distributing electronic versions of the manual because of piracy concerns :(

Romeo Bravo Gulf-

Where are you from in NZ?

I had a friend from NZ who played rugby who I meet playing rugby in US. I visited him in Wellington and we toured the countryside a bit. What a beautiful, beautiful country.

G'Day!
We live in Auckland. I only emmigrated just over a year ago from the UK.
(My wife is a kiwi so it's all her fault!! Ha ha!)

The weather is a bit of an improvement over the UK that's for sure.
That said, I still can't quite get my head round the concept of spending Christmas on a beach!

So when we're not outside these holidays I'm playing AATF and getting my butt kicked by about 10 T90E's . . . . . . .
:D
