According to Matrix (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1329145&mpage=1),
You'll be happy to know that Matrix has released the v3.7.3 patch for Harpoon 3 ANW. You can now get it at the member services section of the Matrix Web Page.

False alarm. It's only Beta. :(

It's not a false alarm. The beta patch fixes a crapload of bugs and adds some new features that the Harpoon community will like. I believe it's being called a beta patch to allow for community input (bug reports) before the "final" is released, but it seems to be pretty stable at this point.

Exactly.
It is a Beta release and not quite 'official', yet. Lots of folks appear to be waiting for the Official product.
So, welcome to Xtreme-Gamer. :smoke:
How about a game, then? Always willling to play ANW MP with anyone who shows up on the HarpGamer server. We could take the new Beta version out for a spin. Or, take a look at: H3 Multiplayer Server up Again (http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/harpoon-series/46710-h3-multiplayer-server-up-again.html) thread.

Herman (et al),
I am looking forward to player reports on the 3.7.3 Beta.
I guess I am like a fair number of other Harpooners ... currently wanting to wait and see.
Anyway, I've been gone for a while and I should be able to get some MP-Harpoon in starting in January '07. I'm off to England for the Holidays!

I would put myself in the same boat as you. I am awaiting an "Official" release before expending any effort on it. I saw what happened with, 'The Fiasco (a.k.a. Beta Patch 3.7.1 (http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/harpoon-series/43756-harpoon-3-anw-3-7-1-beta-update-now-available.html)). A number of other Harpoon players have expressed the same opinion to me. It certainly isn't everyone, but more than a few are awaiting 'official' status, too.
The ANW server hosted by HarpGamer is currently running the Beta 3.7.3 patch software and you need it before you can even connect. I've run a couple of games on it and that's all I'll say until the official release. :(
If anyone decides to jump in and test this patch, I strongly recommend that they do a second installation of the game. That way, they have the originally released 3.7.0 version alongside the Beta Patch 3.7.3 in case they discover any 'new features'. :D
Have an excellent time in the UK for the holidays.

Oh, these Harpooners of today...back in my day, all we had to say was, "Batches? We don't get no steenking batches!"
Same for me Boats , just had the old pencil and paper no updates etc hehe
Same for me Boats , just had the old pencil and paper no updates etc hehe
No kidding. I NEVER got a patch for any version of the game. We did a hell of a lot of testing doing HC2002, and HC2002 Gold, but that was because we all knew that people who didn't have a clue about naval warfare had a lot of input with the way the games were designed in the early years. Now you have a lot of very knowledgeable people spending God knows how many hours into the the wee hours not only testing, but making notes. THAT'S what makes a good game great.
Unfortunately, some of those players don't seem to understand the business concept of "we have to get to the point where we can SELL the game to start making a PROFIT, which we have to start making, so we can still have a GAME". At some point, the developer is going to put his foot down and say, no more hairs to split, can't afford another feature, we gotta ship NOW. What makes a difference there, and Don Gilmans has so far shown that he is willing to do this, and Matrix willing to go along, is ship patches at no cost, even though there is still going to be a lot of labor involved in the coding. Pay attention here, children, this is the important part. More than a few times during development of HC2002, we'd fix something, and break a bunch of other things. You never knew sometimes what kind of can of worms is going to pop up. So, if your pet peeve bug doesn't get fixed, that is probably a good reason why not. In the business world, it's called ROI: Return On Investment. "Will the hours we put into fixing this bug (and all the other things the fix affects) really enhance the game, or make it more playable, or is it something we're just going to have to live with?"
Put it this way: I love my wife dearly, but her programmer left a few bugs...I still love her, I wouldn't trade her in on a different model, and I'm sure as hell not going to try and re-program her...I've spent many years trying to keep from getting programmed myself!

LiuZG showed up a few days ago to try out the new Beta Patch 373. Unfortunately, every attempt at making a connection ended in disconnection and crash to the desktop. In fact, some of the crashes were so severe that we had to get Tony to re-set the HarpGamer ANW server, entirely.
While we were sitting around awaiting the server to re-set so that we could make another attempt to start a session, we talked about our "favourite" crashes and other "pet" bugs. In general, we agreed that the "Waiting for Server to Respond" freeze up and the CTD whereby games simply ended right after they started were probably the best. We were so happy that someone got a chance to make money that we had absolutely no problem with sitting around and staring at the desktop because that was the real reason we spent $50 for the game. :crosseye:
After two hours of total futility in attempting to achieve a connection, we finally gave up.

Anyone else got a 'favourite' pet bug story to share? Of course, only folks who actually PLAY the game would have one of those.... :clown:
Well, I've been glad to pay my $50 (in addition to receiving a free game ("Thanks!") for the little bit of testing I did. I'm with Boats 100% that thegame must make money to continue!
I did enjoy playing 3.7.3 with Herman. We played Nordkapp Multiplayer. Had two crashes but managed to restart from saved games twice, and I tried to make a lot of notes of the new behaviours of 3.7.3 vs 3.7.0 and 3.6. I'll need to re-qualify or change as many of my 3.6. scens as I can but given the sheer number of bug fixes (and suspected new ones as Boats says) it may take me a long time to do so. Freek

Herman, if the Harpoon is Sh!t in a Box, which is what it must be since you whine so much, then why the hell do you keep playing it? My point is that you will never get the game exactly like you want it. There's going to be some compromises no matter what game it is.
And no Herman, I don't play H3...I never played any of the H2/H3 line of games. Never said or implied that I did. I used an example of things that I DID DO WITH HC2002. And if I didn't actually play as much back then as you'd like me too, that was probably because I was working 10 hours a day, six days a week, and a bit on Sunday, and spent a large amount of my time in IRC discussing the project and providing direction and goals (that's what leadership does, Herman, rather than sit around and whine about your favorite can getting kicked) AND going through a ton of HULL email every night. Oh, almost forgot...I am and was married at the time. Didn't get to do much with the wife or the rest of my family back then.
So don't sit there and judge me, Herman, don't even try. I paid my dues and then some, and I STILL spend a fair portion of my free time dealing with Harpoon. See, I'm still dedicated to the ideals passed on to me by Ed Ladner and Saul, and many other fine people, to always work towards keeping the game alive...rather than sitting around b!tiching about bugs (instead of working with the dev team to get rid of them, and yes, I know why you aren't there anymore, Don was REAL sorry you left...NOT) and bad-mouthing the game at every turn.
Boats, who is NOT interested in hearing your excuses or BS, because I've already heard more than enough.

When you actually find out what is going on in the system, c'mon back and rant some more on the SS Nostromo (http://www.harplonkhq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=74#74), now, y'hear! :clown:

Ya'll please feel free to visit Hermans rant, since he obviously can't post it here. Wonder why that is?.....And no, I don't have a thing to do with what you post in here, Herman.

According to Matrix (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1348781),
Just to let you know that a new beta patch, H3.8 Release Candidate 4, is ready for downloading on the Matrix Member Services.
Warning: This is a BETA Patch.
I would strongly recommend that anyone considering the application of this Beta Patch to their game to run a separate/duplicate installation. That way, you would have one installation with 3.7.0 and another installation for 3.8 (in case something weird appears due to the nature of Beta releases).

Looks like my warning was prescient: Zacklaws (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1349192&mpage=1)
Having been happy with all releases of Harpoon since it first came out, I always put bugs etc down to weapon system malfunctions, pilot errors, etc as opposed to bugs in the programme etc (for a bit of reality lol, well what does work perfect in real life.) and using Harpoon 3 patched to 3.7.3 and encountering no major problems, I tried the H3.8 Release Candidate 4 which has just been released and found it to just give me CTD's and as it happened so fast could not see what Harpoon was loading at the time after I had selected and opened a scenario. The last words I would see would relate to multiplay or something like that before CTDing. On one occasion it screwed my system up so bad that I had to reboot.
I looked in the config for clues but saw nothing unusual. Trying different databases, scenarios etc made no difference, even ones that I have recently run would not work. In the end I deleted the whole lot reinstalled and patched to 3.7.3. Emphasis added by HH
So, I'll say it again. Install a second branch of ANW if you want to avoid these kind of problems when testing Beta.
