I'm trying to understand the employment of artillery. Do I have to wait until a target appears before artillery can be used? Can I assign a general area that if the enemy is detected, the artillery units tasked with that specific sector will fire automatically?

I know this is covered somewhat in the manual and documents provided by HPS and community, but I am just seeking some clarity.

The trick here is placing a TAI (Targeted Area of Interest) in the vicinity of where you "expect" an enemy will pass. Then, you plot an artillery target directly on the TAI. When you do this, the "Link to TAI" check box is active, and you can select it. You then select the target type you wish to target. If/When the footprint of that particular target type crosses the footprint of the TAI, the unit will conduct the fire mission with great effect. If you are unsure of the target type, you select "Target of Opportunity", and the unit you select for that target will fire when any unit's footprint crosses the TAI footprint, but slightly reduced effectiveness compared to a specified target type.

This same principle applies to Air Strikes and Bomber Missions!

You can also "pound dirt" with artillery or air,...but why would you when you could actually target it with higher effectiveness?

The only limitations here are:

1. How many TAI's you get for the scenario
2. TAI's take a full turn to become "active, UNLESS they are placed in Turn 0. TAI's placed in Turn 0 become active immediately!

Hope this helps, DP.
