Today, Vince (TJ) Taijeron and I successfully connected two DA games over the Internet. Both of us have LinkSys routers/firewalls. The following Microsoft document, though unclear, was instrumental in us achieving success. Since DA uses DirectX 7, we followed the instructions for this version.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;240429
Here is what we did:
1. We both accessed the firewall setup information, using the firewall software, created ports to accept the game information.
2. We both created the initial connection on port #47624 and a second series of ports (2300-2400) for subsequent TCP/IP messages.
3. Since TJ also had a software firewall, he had to disable some of its restrictions.
4. I used freeware software to ID my actual WAN address. I started a game after providing TJ my WAN address.
5. TJ connected to my computer IAW the DA multiplayer instructions.
6. Note: The DA host actually transmits the entire .sce/.btl file to all clients. My connection was slow and this took almost five minutes to complete. Unfortunately, the game did not provide me any feedback as to its progress as it connected and transferred the game file. Since TJ and I were talking over the phone, I was not worried. Clearly, I need to add some kind of status bar in the future to keep the host informed as to connection progress.
Hopefully, this helps those who may want to play DA in a true multiplayer mode.
