It's finally on its way to many a door in time for Christmas! This is really exciting, and everyone who worked on the game is very happy with the end product, so that means you should be as well!

The sound you hear this Christmas won't be of a jolly fat man leading a team of reindeer from rooftop to rooftop, but rather the cacophony of modern death machines descending from the skies and vomiting forth Hell from their bowels. From the verdant jungles of Vietnam, the sun-baked desolate landscape of Somalia, to the Taliban infested mountains of Afghanistan, take a ride with the Air Assault Task Force and wage war in the most realistic simulation available commercially on your PC! Shrapnel Games is pleased to announce that ProSIM Company's Air Assault Task Force for Windows is now shipping!

Air Assault Task Force, available directly through Shrapnel Games for only $44.95, is a real-time simulation of airmobile operations of the past forty years. Featuring campaigns in some of the most infamous hotspots of the world (and training operations in the United States), players will command more than just air assault troops. Besides airmobile, operations include the use of light infantry, artillery, armor, attack aviation, and the whole range of modern land combatants, all fighting on real world terrain imported directly into the game using digital elevation maps. Other games can try and replicate the battlefield, but Air Assault Task Force gives you the actual battlefield.

The next generation of ProSIM games, Air Assault Task Force is the core engine that will be used in all future ProSIM titles and builds upon its predecessor, the ATF: Armored Task Force engine. Retaining all the realism and unparalleled accuracy of ATF, Air Assault Task Force makes a monumental change with the user interface. Previously users commanded their forces by selecting the order and then selecting the unit, whereas now in Air Assault Task Force a simple right-click on a unit will then allow that unit to be ordered. While seemingly a minor change, by creating a much more intuitive command structure Air Assault Task Force tears down the walls of difficulty that some gamers found with previous titles.

ProSIM veterans will also find a slew of graphical changes, with a much cleaner interface and brighter graphics that now support either full screen or a Windowed mode up to 1280x1024 using the latest DirectX technology. The damage modeling has been fully upgraded to allow precision system destruction, as opposed to the previous "live or dead" model. Improved munitions, variable weather, individual buildings, and other enhancements found throughout ATF: Armored Task Force are of course present.

Most exciting of all Air Assault Task Force is fully backwards compatible with the ATF: Armored Task Force line of games, and indeed actually will upgrade those games to take full advantage of the new engine. Essentially this means that players can enjoy their favorite titles like Raging Tiger: The Second Korean War, The Falklands War: 1982, and The Star and the Crescent with all the bells and whistles found in Air Assault Task Force. How many other developers are willing to go the extra mile and ensure that gamers don't have to abandon their old games because of the latest title arriving on the scene?

Like all ProSIM titles Air Assault Task Force comes with extensive documentation, a helpful user community, and the dedicated support of ProSIM.

For a taste of what to expect be sure to download the demo, available at:

More information on Air Assault Task Force can be found at www.shrapnelgames.com (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/), where you can also find the complete catalog of ProSIM titles. Titles so real that the defense contractors actually use them to power their simulations. You'll also find many other award-winning and exciting independent games.

Likewise. Well done to all concerned. :)

Just hoping, in vain probably, that my copy wings it's way to Blighty in time for the Christmas holiday.

Mine has shipped also! Can't wait.

Has a list come out yet detailing which 11 missions are shipped with the game? (I know I've read about a few of them....but don't think I've seen a list covering all 11?...Is that the correct number?).

2. Regarding Operation Anaconda that is shipped with the game.....how detailed is this? Is it covering mainly the 10th MTN, or does it also include the OP with the SEALs and Rangers on Takur Ghar?

Fourteen scenarios ship with the game. 2 are the same as those in the demo. There are also 4 scenarios which retell the battle for LZ X-Ray in Vietnam (subject of the book and movie, "We Were Soldiers..."). 4 scenarios retell the events of Task Force Ranger in Somalia (subject of the book and movie, "Black Hawk Down"). The final 4 scenarios are a historical recreation of Operation Anaconda.

All of the scenarios are built using space shuttle radar telemetry elevation data of the actual locations. Also, just as with our previous titles, meticulous research has gone into recreating these battles just as they happened, with precise OOBs, equipment, and friendly and enemy dispositiosn (Gary Bezant really outdid himself here). I think the result is the most realistic treatment ever of these battles in simulation, military OR civillian.

If you have read the book, "Not a Good Day to Die," you will get a since for the coverage of the scenarios (though I think our accuracy is a little more flawed than that book, which has an overtly SOF slant to it). We really did try to capture every facet of the battle. The scenarios include US, Canadian, AND Afghani forces, both conventional and SOF.

Pat, as always, thanks for the timely response and information. Definitely looking forward to Friday (when I expect AATF to arrive).

As for "Not a Good Day to Die"......Sean Naylor book leaves much to be desired in terms of accuracy (IMO)....on a few fronts......Additionally Mr. Naylor doesn't have the best of a repuatation within the SOF community / SEALs.....for what that is worth.....

Robert's Ridge (book) is a book that does a very fine job (with regard to only a specific battle within the Operation of Anaconda).....The battle to take command of the peak on Takur Ghar....

Doh! I meant "a little less flawed than that book."

I agree. "Not a Good Day to Die" is self-agrandizement at its worse. SOF guys HATE Naylor.

Anybody ordered from Europe? Expected time of delivery?

Yup. It normally takes about 6 days by USPS, but it isn't exactly the time of year for quick delivery!

My UK supplier recently went out of business and AATF will be my first direct order from the US. I’ve really no way of judging how long the order will take but the Christmas post wont help. I’ll just have to bite the bullet when my American cousins start receiving the simulation and telling everyone how great is!

It's funny, I've been doing so much work on the next game, I'm starting to get excited about seeing AATF in all it's shrink-wrapped glory!

I will, of course, be donating it to our software library here at work, but it sure will be nice opening it and reading the manual and smelling that fresh paper...:)

Hey Curt or Pat,
is it anticipated that AATF will run w/o problems on the new Microsoft Vista operating system? I assume so, but I'm planning to get a new PC after the launch of Vista and wanted to make sure that was wise to do in a AATF context. Thanks...

Don't know when Pat will get to this, so I'll take a shot. The short answer is, don't know.

There may well be issues with using IE7, because it was built using IE6, but as long as you install IE6 on your system, it "should" work just fine. It is possible to have both IE7 and 6 installed on the same system, IIRC.

Anyway, I'm personally staying away from Vista for a bit, until all of the kinks are worked out, and even then, I will have a dual-boot system, because then I KNOW I will be able to play and work on the ATF/AATF series, as well as any other Pre-Vista games, without issue!

Just a thought for you...:)

Curt-
Thanks for the reply. If the biggest issue is IE7, I can report that I have IE7 installed on my old version of Windows XP and it works fine with AATF BETA. No problems at all, at least that I have experienced. Guess that is a good sign. I'm going to take the Vista leap on the new computer I'm getting and if AATF doesn't work, can always use my old system.

Nicdain-

I like your avatar. My wife is Italian and "Avanti" is my favorite Italian word. I say to her "Avanti, Avanti, Avanti!". She moves quicker than she does to the German "Los, Los, Los!" or "Gehen Sie schnell!"

Is that avatar a divisional symbol from the Italian Army?

Hi James!
Definitely that's the correct word to make her run!

My avatar represents the badge of the Alpine "Tridentina Division", one of the most famous units of alpine infantry.
Unfortunately, the recent history of Tridentina Division is one of great sacrifice in Russia, where the alpine troops were forced to a long and deadly retreat in the snow. Many soldiers lost their lives, just because they had not the appropriate clothing and gear.

The game should work fine on Vista. It ran on the Vista BETA without incident. If anyone on the forum gets the release version of Vista and has issues with AATF, PLEASE, let us know so we can fix them.

My personal recommendation (not AATF related) is to wait on Vista until the first service pack is released. There will DEFINITELY be major issues with the initial release.
