What are the best original soundtracks you've listen to in a game?

My favourites:

1. Taipan - Ocean - 1987 - Commodore 64
2. Lords of the Rising Sun - Cinemaware - 1988 - Amiga
3. TES Oblivion - Bethesda Software - 2006 - PC
4. Populous - Bullfrog Productions - 1989 - Amiga
5. Onslaught - Hewson - 1989 - Amiga

I actually find the music openings from Civ type games rather impressive.

I even liked the tune for the opening of Rise of Nations.

But the one I think I have liked the most is the Civ IV opener. Although I found the one from the Warlords expansion wasn't as good.

By original soundracks I guess that means games like Grand Theft Auto don't count as they used pre-existing music?

I would say Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in that case, the music accompanying the cutscenes adds extra depth to an already brilliant game. ;)

None..I truly abhor music in games, especially in FPS games...the first thing I do is turn it off.

The worst game music of all times is in Halo/Halo2, since you can't friggin' turn it off! Actually, the music itself is pretty cool, but I'd rather listen to it when I'm NOT actually playing the game.

When I rule the world, one or 2 folks at Bungie are going right up against the wall for that. :D

Metal gear solid 2 and 3 are pure brilliance. I also love the take on MGS2's theme tune in the middle of granins office (mgs)

I would never ever own a piece of gaming music tho...no offence lol

Thats not just the MGS2 music, its the theme tune for the whole MGS series. ;) Even though you never hear it in MGS1 it was in the MGS1 trailers and in the intro to "Special Missions". :)

Halo 2. That gothic-sounding stuff, cranking up just when the proverbial $**t hits the fan was pretty awesome.

Echo an earlier sentiment that the Civ IV theme was awesome - I sometimes load the game up just to listen to that in the background. Also like *some* of the in-game music.

The opera-style soundtrack from Heroes of Might & Magic II was pretty cool. (I don't like that type of music generally speaking, but it was perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the game...

And to go waaaaay back, I loved the music on the C64 version of Exodus - Ultima III. (Go Richard Garriot! Long live Lord British! Too bad all the Ultimas sucked after they went past the 8-bit games. Until then I had completed Ultima I, II, III, IV and V...)

Also, still grin like a maniac when I hear the M.U.L.E. theme... :)

I second SoccerDJ's choice of the RTW and M2TW soundtracks, and would go so far as to throw in the soundtrack for the original MTW. Creative Assembly puts together some great audio enhancements to their games, both through voice acting, as well as ambient music.

It takes quite a bit to get me to listen to it, at least for more than a few minutes. One of the very first thigns done in any new game is to turn the music off. Probably only a handful of games in all these many years have had the sound left on. I *do* always give it a try, but I find in most cases that the music detracts from my sense of immersion.

Any game with Mojo Nixon tunes gets my votes ....

I'll go with Redneck Rampage (sometimes I start to miss Kansas City -- then I wake up screaming - and it is all over :clown: Thank God for that!!!).

Hell it (RR -not KC) even has a song about a drunk obnoxious bar chick puking in the back seat of a cop car, how can you possibly beat that???

-otoh- one of the Carmageddon games -or maybe it was a GTA game had some Maiden - thinking it was Carmageddon 3, but not sure - I guess this shows how I played the couple of GTA games I got ( as road rage therapy--- ok sob, jaywalk in front of me - and I'm going up on the sidewalk after you!!! :O )
