View Full Version : Halo 3 MP Only to Support 16 Players
http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/11/02/1up-clarifies-halo-3-info-new-details/
Thats a bit little, i thought they already had more than that?!
nah thats what they are now. But pre-hype, they stated 50 players. That has now been debunked.
That sucks, i guess considering there is already soooo much interest in Halo 2 and 1 it won't make much difference to its sucess.
I think they were trying to combat Resistance 40 person online battles. Some people are turned off by big numbers because the maps have to be so big...so this isn't bad news to some...just me...I like huge maps.
just me...I like huge maps.
I love huge maps, especially when they're empty and you have to hunt around for the other couple of people on the server for ages, then you finally find them looking out a window with their back to you :D
Like I said in the main Halo 3 thread - large scale online battles aren't what Halo's multiplayer is about, i'm not saying it wouldn't be good - just that i'd prefer multiplayer to be more like the first two games and not like some kind of Battlefield: Halo hybrid.
Bungie should concentrate on making the multiplayer as fun and as well balanced as the original Halo's MP, i'm no big fan of H2.
I think they should give the option. The ability to have massive battles doesn't mean you HAVE to have massive battles. No reason they can't have the best of both worlds and appeal to a larger audience.

The option would be pointless and recently ive played huge maps with small people in games and its so boring. Now Lockout with 16 people is fun as hell!! I agree completely with Bootaaay, we dont need another BattleField 2, and with the halo 1 mp :) (except the flamethrower, never liked it much xD)
Why would it be pointless? Instead of being forced to play the game one way..you have options. i would absolutely love 50 people chaos match.
and I like the flamethrower lol

I totally agree, i think that as server admin you should be able to choose the size of your map, and then the amount of players on your map e.g. 16, 32, 64 like on battlefield

I guess it would be nice, But why concetrate on huge maps when you can have TONS of small maps with awesome designs.
but you could have tons of huge maps with smaller maps that are sections of the huge map :D

I dont see that happening, I dont want repetetive maps like that..

..b.e..cause...bigger maps...are umm cool? Because it would allow for more strategy AND more run and gun. There are no negatives to a bigger map other then it would be harder to kill each other...which is awesome?
its next gen...there should be no negatives...there is no reason they can't play halo online like you want and like I want.

Hmm, maybe so but If you like huge maps tat much, i reccomend BF 2142.
Love huge maps...but I wasn't overly interested in that game. I am however a huge fan of halo :P

2142 wasn't worth the cash, i'll be sticking with BF2...and Just Cause :P :D
(since were speaking of huge maps)
i agree totally with ehandlr. Why does everyone keep refering to BF2142? thats not the only game where big maps are used!
Having huge maps would appeal to tons more players as there'll be small and big. AAnd if you're worried about there being only 8 people on a 40 player match, thats not going to happen. This is Halo we are talking about. You'll find it almost impossible to join them as they'll probably be full :p

Exactly! So stick to those games if you want to play huge maps - it's not what Halo's MP is about, and clearly it never will be! I'm glad Bungie will be sticking to their tried and tested formula (you know, the one that still makes Halo 2 the most played Live game month after month) as it's a winning one - having huge maps would put me right off, I have rarely ever enjoyed an online FPS that has more than 32 players.
lol, i give up :p lol. Well having a mode which features laods of players could appeal to others. People who dont like it still have the usual halo matches to play :)
(runs away before anyone counter-replies :p)
Yes, it could appeal to others. They should go play other games :D I'd rather have 10-15 well designed 16 player max maps than a handful of 16 player maps and a handful of huge maps that have no business being in Halo MP in the first place.
Lol, ok - i'm stopping now... ;)
I find it odd that someone would want to leave options out to have it their way. Thats retarded if you ask me. I'm not asking them to remove the 16 player matches...I'm asking they add more as an OPTION!!!!!! Meaning if you don't like those...then don't do those. The overal response to Halo being 50 players online was astounding.
To limit such a great game to something last gen is utter Bull Sh*t.
Whatever, i'd rather they concentrate on making the multiplayer live up to and improve on the current format rather than waste time providing options for people who want some kind of battlefield halo hybrid.
At the end of the day, we don't know why Bungie decided to make Halo 3 16 players max - and until they comment on the matter, this is just all speculative bull****.
I don't want a battlefied halo hybrid....a map doesn't make the game. I want halo.....with maps that people can't spawn camp....and actually make the game a little more strategic then simpel run and gun.
There is nothing wrong with having both as an option. It doesn't make it any less Halo then before.

Well obviousley we're going to have to agree to disagree, there may be nothing wrong with having extra options but I for one am glad that they are concentrating on making the current Halo multiplayer format the best they can rather than concentrating on providing extra options to meet some peoples expectations of what a next-gen online FPS should be. No matter how awesome 50 people online may have sounded, it's not happening - i'm going to be looking forward to Halo 3's multiplayer for what it is, not admonishing it for what it could have been or lamenting the lack of options provided by the developers.
Anywho, this is clearly a debate of personal preference, and as such theres really no point continuing it further ;)

If you love large maps, play Halo Custom Edition. As of now, its bungie choice, and concetrating on huge maps would start more complains like not enough maps. Medium Maps are fine imo :)

Your telling me a top developer like Bungie couldn't handle making several maps of several different sizes without screwing up? Thats a cop out response. Perhaps you didn't peruse the forums when the 50 multi-person was announced. Halo was on fire with that news.

Feck no, have you seen the bungie forums, they're like so many clueless fanboys and stuff. We need people like you to join but 1 person cant make a difference :/
well, its next gen and i would have expected Halo 3 to include both types of maps. :dead: Oh well, not like i'll get to play it anyways, until it comes out on pc :p
EDIT: they could always make new map content available couldnt they? So whats with the "i'd rather have so many maps compared to a situation where the maps are big and small :dead: they're bound to bring new ones out constantly.

You seem to be confusing 'Announced' and 'News' with 'Rumour' and 'Bullcrap'. A quick google search for 'Halo 3 50 players' gives up the following links;

The original source being some guy on the TXB forums whose friend is an uncle of a bungie team member

Well the point wasn't if/when they announced it....the point was the initial reaction from Halo fans.
Also bungie did say they were aiming at 54-60 players.

That's the thing. Wouldn't it be funner to play lots of maps with variety then outta nowhere, New Halo 3 map XBL Content nextweek! So imo more maps could be better for launch. This is at DS.
ehandlr - 'aiming' is the keyword, but hell you never know, they could bump it up higher and hopefully it'll be 24 =D
I find it a bit stupid that u are asking for lesser options in a game...Its not like u have to play 50 player is it.

I find it a bit stupid everyone wants to base it off a ww2 game. Also i've played in 16 player servers and they're way funner then to the spawn camping people do. A game that deserves 64 player maps is Unreal Tournament games because its fast paced, and that's what makes UT awesome along with the vehi's and weapons.
16 people in a map like Lockout is awesome.
Medium sized maps are awesome to for some good ctf like Blood Gulch and Sidewinder.

I agree With Ehandlr, it wouldn't be a problem for them to make 50 player maps. And i really like having the option between playing a scaled down version of a map with 16 players (or even 8 players) or playing a huge 64player battle. how kick ass wouldn't it be if you had 32 players on each team meeting in a bottleneck in the map and causing total chaos and bloodshed. Say a Canyon, wouldn't it be awesome if you had a few tanks meeting there, and a crap load of Master Chiefs jumping about the rocks, maybe a few Ghosts swooshing around.
Its not even like I "just" want big maps. I want it all...cash, money, diamond rings, gold things.
I love 1 on 1. I love 2 on 2. I love 30 on 30.

And how laggy it would be, they should leave that for servers and not matchmaking types. It would be nice if it was the pc version of halo 2 tho with some more maps..
Why would it be laggy? PS3 is doing 40 online players with no lag.
its only laggy on Pcs with 40 plus players because people have either bad ping or a slow pc

Hmm but there internet connection, unless Microsoft does the dedicated servers, then it would be useless. Also at the end of the day, Bungie made their choice.
yea i suppose, bit gay though :(

The problem is the more players you have the more data the server needs to send out.
Given that the typical Broadband line in the Uk has 256kps upload a 50player match would probably be a lagfest.
Remember for everything you do your xbox has to tell the server and the server has to relay it to everyone in the vacinity.
Up the players up the data that needs to be shifted and proccessed.

i'm good at that :p
some games handle more players better than others
Bf2 is terrible for lag its so sensitive if conditions aren't perfect for it it lags.
C&C generals is awfull to, that lags on a 100mbit LAN, and thats if you can even keep a game going without it droping with sync error!
WOW has amazing netcode i don't know how they do it but they can manage to have hundreds of players in an area and it still uses hardly any bandwith. it averaged 0.5kb/s in and 0.05kb/s when i last played it slightly higher in battles and stuff but not much.
Problem for halo3 is its an FPS so everything needs to happen in realtime also if they added more players theyd prob have to drop the detial to allow the xbox to process everything...
Bit like most games do in splitscreen.

WoW servers still surprise me, that is amazing. Now all we need is an MMO-FPS Halo :p
If Blizzard and Bungies were to join forces, omg that'll be secks :)

I have been playing 45+ COD2 matches for about 2weeks now, not once have i met lag. Halo trial on the other hand is just pure lag every time.

same games seem to have more efficent network code than others, it depends on how the wrote the game.
Also conditions on the internet can affect the game.
Its those other people hogging all the bandwith on the pipe damnit ;)
FFXI has 4000 people per server and it has to be real time because of people competing over spawns. Not only that but you have to have timed weapon skills to perform skill chains.

dunno. MMOS generally have better network code than most other games cus they were built from the ground up to work over the internet ;)

yeah, Star Wars Galaxies, after the CU (combat upgrade) it was awesome, had to get used to it though, it was the best game ever, then suddenly, because of WoW, they changed the whole thing, made it waaay simpler, took away all the professions, took away everything that was fun and special about the game. Now it sucks.
