View Full Version : GOW 12 hours of gameplay????
I just got really upset at Gears of Wars....only 12 hours of gameplay????what kinda shizz is that?
Epic VP Mark Rein has branded Sony’s claims that PS3 will kick off the next generation as “bull****”.
Pimping Gears of War at GDC London today he told an audience of developers, ”Sony says the next generation starts when they say so. I say, that’s bull****. Gears of War is the first second-generation game for Xbox 360 and it looks very fine. You will never see launch titles that look this good.”
He countered recent stories that Gear of War lasts for 10 hours, “Someone said that at TGS but they were wrong. If you’re on the development team and you’ve played it 30 times then sure, you can get through it in ten hours but for first time players it’s going to be at least 12 hours.”

thts pathetic!
but i guess the online side will lengthen its a life alot?
i hope?
i pray.
Yea they are banking on the online side like Halo..but this 8-12 hour bull crap is starting to urk me. This is when I say god bless blu-ray if it fixes this crap.

well most console shooters take even less than that to complete but blu ray should fix this Ps3 FTW
The average FPS takes 8-12 hours of gameplay...most of the time the online helps make it worth it....I was just hoping next gen would fix that for all 3 systems.

Id say screw the story, pwnin nubs will keep me entertained
forget that...Yea its fun to play online..but sometimes I just don't want to deal with peoples crap and want to play a good game. Kinda the reason I prefer RPG's to be honest. There is no reason they can't give us 20+ to 30+ hours of gameplay as well as awesome online.
and to be honest...if it had 20-30+ hours of gameplay..the online play would be better as well....more maps/weapons/enemies/etc.

Downloadable content ftw?
I hope so......I want this game... but I don't want to pay for XBL. I'll pay for extra content.

It should be some free maps like H2 and why not pay for XBL, its great
It's replay value that counts imho, take COD2 for example - the single player isn't that long, but it's so entertaining it's worth playing through multiple times on different difficulties and the multiplayer is so good i've spent more hours on it than any other 360 game. If GoW ends up with a really compelling single player that is worth playing through again and again and is a real challenge on harder difficulty settings, combined with the online co-op and combined with some hopefully awesome multiplayer, then I won't be too bothered about the length of the single player.
Wow really? Is everyone stuck in last gen? I've always went by the math (although it won't work now) that I want one gauranteed hour of entertainment for every dollar I pay. Hence why I love RPG's...most RPG's promise 40-50 hours of gameplay and a large portion have a huge replay value.
I purposly missed out on some great games because of their weak play time. God of War being one of them. I refused to buy it because it didn't seem to fit my entertainment to money scale.
8-12 hours for a next gen game bothers me and I'm sure that in most cases I'll simply refuse to buy them....I'll rent them..beat them and move on.
I still will most likely buy GOW just because it does look like a great game. I'll be moaning and cursing the whole time though.
As far as XBL...I'm waiting to see if it goes free. After Xmas...i'll play with the idea for paying..right now it doesn't interest me enough when I can play PC games for free online.
I'd hardly say i'm stuck in the last gen just because I look for enjoyment over length in my games - Okami is a great example, it's not particularly long - certainly much shorter than the Zelda series, but because it's such an enjoyable experience i'll probally end up playing it through multiple times, same goes for Shadow of the Collosus.

Shooters aren't really like things like RPG's or adventure games where you can easily fill 30+ hours of gameplay though. Single player can get extremely repetitive, just because there's really nothing to the game other than shooting people. Sure you can get other weapons, etc. but that only adds so much extra stuff you can do. That's why most of the games have a relatively short (compared to other genres) playlife in single player, and an extended life in the multiplayer.
Hey....it's kinda sounding like you think you deserve more for your money......;)
Or I'm an educated consumer ;) They still exist..were just rare.
I don't expect shooters to last for 50+ hours like DQ8 (which can much longer actually). But I do wish they would be 20 hours of gameplay. I mean lets face it...we've had 8-12 hour action games since the middle of last gen. Its time for improvement. I can't be the only one upset at how short Halo is even if it has great online and good replay value.
The repetiveness as levels progress is nobody's fault but the developers..but maybe now they can change that.
Who knows..maybe Resistance will break the mold...hopefully online downloads will change it as well.

Halo 2 pisses me off in story mode, doesn't live to the books :P

Hmm I hear Bungie is working on 50% on Halo 3's storyline this time :P Also lets face it, fps games will probably nvr have that much of a detailed storyline like final fantasy.
But I rather have a 8-12hr good replay value game then a 20+ crap one that 'll probably wont finish because you know, its crap!
Wee my thing is in bold >.>
EDIT: I just noticed, i love the ":P" smile.

I never minded how short Halo was, and simply because the online was quite good. I agree with all of what Bootaaay said, I really don't care how short games are, as long as they're fun. One of my favorite games of last gen, Armed and Dangerous, was excruciatingly short at 6 hours (XBL added another hour or so with a downloadable mission) but I still loved it and played it over a few times. Though, I almost got my money's worth according to your value equation, since it only cost me $13.

Well as others have said I would rather buy a shorter but better quality game than a longer but crappy game. For example if a game became repetitive just for the sake of added length it would get very boring. However if they cut out the crap it may be shorter but it would be all the more sweeter. :)

i agree with both sides:
to me, multiplayer is always going to be more fun, so even if the one player is short, ill get the game for its multiplayer online pwnage :p
but i aslo agree with ehandler, that Goldeneye on the N64 was probably 10-12 hours, maybe less, depending what difficulty you played it on, and we are 2 gens from that. I think tehy could lengthen it, but again it is hard to break away from repetitveness without making it ****, look at Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, or Red Faction II-
On Red Faction II the first 6 levels or something are amazing, they are fast, thrilling, a complete shooting heaven. But then they try and incorporate other level ideas, like sneaking threw sewers, which was so ****ing awful i nearly set fire to my gamecube.
But I think that with the new technology, and witha bit of imganation developers could think up different ways of shooting, rather than different things other than shooting i.e., one level you are fighting on a battelfield with machine guns, then u have to fight in helicopters...
its not hard, its been done before.
Ans again, like ehandler said, the better the single player is, the better the multi will be as it will have more to feed off of.
I think its just the singleplayer that takes 12hours.. Like halo.
The live will kick ass
I agree with ehandlr. And also SC's example is pointless. Of course you're going to play a game which is better, but shorter, than a really crap, long one. :dead:
I love FPS's but they are way too short. Like FEAR or Half Life 2, you still wanted to play on when it ended. They have good storylines but its just disappointing when it ends to soon. Take PREY for example, so much potential and it lasts for 5-6 hours max. :dead:
I expect next gen FPS games to be longer like around atleast 20 hours. And you cant say it will get repetitive as that can be said for any game. ;)
The rebuttles I get don't really make sense to me. I mean ofcourse I'd rather have a good short game then a stupid long game....thats common sense..but I'm met with the same logic with graphics. I'd rather have good gameplay over good graphics. Well....I want good gameplay, good graphics, long game, great online....with this gen its entirely feesable. I don't want just one or the other anymore..we don't have to put up with that anymore. I just feel like everyone still lives in last gen...must be my tech geek side coming out...but its possible....it can be done....I don't care if it raises the price a little....and it should be done.

agreed.:)
personally i don't like FPS on consoles, they jus tfeel unatural.. .the only FPS i have EVER played for a extended amount of time on a console is Killzone and thats just for the story mode.
When i play a FPS, i dont have broadband, so it's the single player that counts for me.. so if i buy a FPS with **** gameplay, needless to say i get pretty pissed...
But i mostly agree that they do need to be longer, but if they are longer, they need a ****ing good story to go along with it. Plus good maps and AI.
Eg. Killzone = good. Cool graphics, nice story, not bad Ai andmaps that weren't repetitive.
Firewarior: crap - repetitive maps, bad sounding weapons and they made chaos marines look fat. The only reason i finished it is cause i love 40k.
So i REALLY hope gears of war has a decent singleplayer... and if so, it really should be a bit longer... otherwise, just wait for it to come out in the $10 bin at your local k-mart

I think 10-12 hours is gonna start becoming the norm regardless of the media its stored on... Why? Because for every hour of gaming you add to a game your now more than ever increasing the cost of the game to produce. Its no longer just a case of generating a few more levels and some extra textures.. Now you have to script cut scenes, score music, pay voice over actors... and some games are now using recognised actors for voice over work.
Obviously I don't agree with a game only lasting 10 hours but I just think thats the way it's gonna go.
Personally I think if a game is only gonna last so long that there should be quite a lot of effort put into none-scripted/storyline missions to keep you busy along the way. The GTA games and Saints Row are good examples of this, Oblivion too.
Well I very much doubt that. If you read the article, its basically Sony poking fun at GOW for only being 10 hours long and Microsoft saying Bull**** its 12. Basically Sony is hinting Resistance will be well over 10 hours of gameplay...not to mention over 22 gigs with 40 person online play. So we shall see. 8-12 hours was last gen's average....its next gen time.
Resistance is 22gb large; im guessing this will last longer lol :p

but i'm starting think its the multiplayer thats gonna make the game.

WE have yet to anything from resistance, so what if its 22 gigs, Most of it is Sony trying to make evrything look prettier. And about the 40 multiplayer, that wont mean that it'll suck. But nonetheless 40 multiplayer is awesome though. I hope the 50-64 multiplayer come true for halo 3 :)
Sony hinted that Resistance will be longer then 10 hours. 50-64 would be utter chaos unless the board and spawn points are huge!!! lol.. could you imagine repopping and die instantly again lol. There are so many people, would be easy to die over and over again lol.

Lol i find that fun. I love killing spawn campers, then i'll be talking 'leet' and crap. Same goes with resistance eh ;) Also but if halo 3 offers some huge maps like coldsnap for halo pc custom edition. Then it'll probably be ok :P
Yea huge maps would be awesome.....and completely destructible objects and buildings you can go in.....
