Sand Castle is a tough nut to crack. The key strategy is breaking their main line of defense using the minimum force and space required. From there you must develop a strategy to attack and clear the objective.
Reconning and Breaching enemy line of defense:
- Lead with scouts. While the formation is spaced to cover the entire zone, that is not completely necessary. You can maintain this formation up to about 2km north of PL HAWK. From there, begin to carefully advance. I detach vehicles and set up stop nodes every 300-500m. Keep the units in hold fire. I would focus on the right flank because the terrain has a few blind spots. (The enemy is spread thin as well.)
- High Payoff targets are BRDM-2s, T-72S MBTs, and BMP-1s. Finding the BRDM-2s is easy. They are usually placed behind sets of other vehicles. Killing BMP-1s and T-72S can get a little tricky because they are more difficult to locate. If the scouts can't find them, you might need to use dismounts. It will slow you down, but you'll be thankful later. I used artillery to kill these vehicles, the T-72 and BMP-1s died in 2 18x tube vollies per. Try to identify and destroy those vehicles located on right side of the highway. The others on the left are not so important since they are out of range. Keep in mind the objective is to clear zone to allow your units to breach the lines safely, not kill the enemy force.
- Depending on your assessment, use a dismount platoon to finish up clearing an area for breach. They have great range with ATGMs, and are far more difficult for the enemy to spot. They'll kill off the BTR-60PBs in about forty-minutes depending on the situation. They'll also help you locate possible enemy dismount positions which can be destroyed by one 6 tube volley.
- Try to breach enemy positions as far north of your zone as possible. Keep the Breaching lanes tight since you don't need a wide front. Keep the breach under 1km in width. Use an economy of force to secure the far side and pass vehicles through.
- From there, try to carefully move units ahead before turning south to attack the village.
Securing the village
- The good news is all civilians were booted out when the attack began. The bad news is the enemy has established good kill zones using interlocking fire and support.
- There is no easy way to clear the village. Remember the terrain is very restricted. That means you should tighten your formations. Try to advance with two companies abreast and one in reserve. Make certain they are close enough to each other to provide mutual support. You might want to avoid using formations to achieve this.
-Watch the highway. Don't drive up the highway. It will allow the enemy to rip you to shreds. Also avoid open areas located around the village. The enemy is waiting for you. Thus, get behind them, and so you can mass fires while denying the enemy the same opportunity.
To assist planning and execution, I have included an image of the platoon placement. It doesn't help too much. It just gives you an ideal where the enemy is.
Hope this helps.
