Oh man..this takes the cake...this movie will officially blow....... read it and weep....I was looking forward to this too.

An official statement from Microsoft has revealed that the motion picture based on Bungie's Halo franchise will be helmed by Neill Blomkamp, a short film and commercial director making his feature film debut with the movie.

A native of South Africa, Blomkamp directed the acclaimed 2005 short film, Alive in Joburg, that depicted a future in which extraterrestrials have become refugees. Last year, Blomkamp also received three Clio Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for his television commercial Citroen-Alive with Technology.

In 2004, Blomkamp was recognized as "One of the Top Five Directors to Watch" at the First Boards Awards and was a featured artist at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes. He has also been nominated for an Emmy award for his work on an episode of James Cameron's Dark Angel.

Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel will produce Halo. The film is currently targeted for a Summer 2008 worldwide release. Halo will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, and will make use of the full range of executive producer Peter Jackson's state-of-the-art production and post-production facilities there, including Weta, Stone Street Studios, and Park Road Post.

The release from Microsoft also mentions latest figures for the video game franchise: "Halo and its 2004 follow-up Halo 2 have sold a combined 14.5 million copies worldwide and grossed more than $650 million (U.S.). On November 2004, Halo 2 shattered records with $125 million in first-day sales."

"As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring Halo's premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," said Jackson. "Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we're delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. With Neill on board, I'm even more excited by the potential of this project."

What? Peter Jackson was scheduled to do this movie. I hate Halo, I think its the worst game I have ever played, I dont see the fun in killing purple aliens with some ****ed up energy gun! However if Peter Jackson would have done the film it would have come out Epic like LOTR or King Kong. I really can not believe there wasting time with a newbie director, that has never shot an actual feature film, sickening

I like Halo...its a simple game that you can pick up and play for 10 minutes before you go to work etc and still have fun doing so..at the same time you can play it for hours at a time. There is nothing groundbreaking about it, but its still hella fun.

Peter Jackson was just a rumor....a false one.

Turns out that Halo Movie will be like every other video game movie. (assumption ofcourse)

Peter Jackson was just a rumor....a false one.

Ya it was a rumor, but he was scheduled to do this film. Atleast they get to take advantage of Peters studio's! Thats a bonus. And I just cant dig Halo, I think personally I shouldn't attack Halo specifically, more the first person shooter genre!

EDIT : Alex Garland was paid 1 million dollars to write the script to the new Halo movie, Microsoft then turned around and sold the script to Universal for 10 million dollars. Shiesty Microsoft! Always trying to grab that dollar.

They sold the script with a contract stipulating they must direct the movie as they see fit. Keep in mind this is as how Microsoft sees fit..not Bungie. Also they refused to allow any Sony related companies buy the script.

Also i'm not a big FPS fan either..most are just too hard for me to bother with the monotony. But Halo is like the easiest FPS game ever...probably why its so popular lol.

lol, thats to good. It seems Microsoft and Sony are just little kids fighting for there parents attention. Metaphorically speaking of course. Anywho I'll of course still check out the movie, and prolly still buy it on DVD and add it to my extremely large movie collection! So all in all I talk the talk, but buckle to Microsofts pressure and go see it anyway! Damn me!

You know, pretty much all video game movies suck but I thought this one had a ray of hope with the Peter Jackson rumor. Unfortunately it will suck, but hey, maybe I'll go see it for laughs.

I love the 2 halos but...as the curse always plays...movies into games NEVER succeed(well, never say never, thats true,Star wars and The Godfather did succeed as games)...well then, how about making a GAME into a movie,no matter how popular it is...its a definate NO NO...it'll shame us all as gamers...let alone the @$$ holes and B@$t@rds who preffer acting GTA on the streets of the real world

P.S. Where The Hell is Jack Thompson, should he drop-in right about now to make another stupid speech about video games or something?
