From Furocity:
Concentrate our forces to the south central attack route, just south of the main river cutting the route east and west to Stalingrad. The North side of the river is another option, but he can get reinforcements there fast, if we can somehow block his reinforcements, by preventing his engineers from ferrying forces across then we will have some advantage. So a high payoff target is any of his engineers
On the attack towards Stalingrad, we can use the Brandenburg special ops (divide into 3 units) to seize some key terrain, in order to cut his supplies and block reinforcements. But we must plan to connect up with them, in order to use them again.
Once we establish the main attack corridor, we have to breach up the sides and push hard towards the pocket, then hopefully pull back the HQ units before the corridor collapses. For if the Soviets play it right, they know they have to hit the corridor from the north and south, otherwise they will lose. Also they will launch hvy attacks north and south in order to divert our attention.
Time is the essence, I might launch a diversionary attack to the North, while I am consolidating my forces to the south of the main river. So turn 1, small attack with arty support North of the river, while moving other units to the main attack. Turn 2 launch the attack hard to create the corridor, and parachute the Brandenburg units on key cross roads (not too far away, because if we lose them, then we can't use them again, about a 4 turn recycle).
From Furocity:
I agree that we have to do something decisive in the first 5 turns while we have the advantage. The quickest way to open the corridor to the Stalin pocket is the center option, hit him hard North of the main river with a supporting attack to the south. The other option I tried is the south option, main attack south and supporting attack north of the main river. One of my goals is to get that Russian engineer and to destroy that bridge. The Brandenburg units can land on the bridge ( I divide him into 3 subunits), I land one on the bridge and I land the other two on key road or bridges (depending on the option I chose). My main forces drives towards the Russian Engineer and I hit him no matter what, while the Brandenburg units destroy the main bridge and block key supply routes.
From Bruce:
This puts the Panzer troops within 8 hexes of the pocket. They will be facing dug in troops and have to deal with the super-river hexes though. It will be a grind, but they should be able to open a passage to the pocket, although it will be difficult to open up the railway line. The problem is path into the pocket will be very narrow and no matter what deployment option is chosen by the Soviets both flanks of the path will be hammered from turn 5 onwards. Furocity has tried this option and liked it.
