This is my Guild Wars review that I wrote for my English Coursework so it might be a bit long but I think it captures it well :D
Guild Wars is an online MMORPG which has taken on the already big market in the bid for supremacy. Guild Wars boasts having no monthly fees which other online RPG’s require, a clever story line with great music and superb graphics. It also is a first of its kind in combining online-RPG with action-RPG to form a wonderful package so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. This is a bold statement and a radical change in the world of RPG’s by the Developers ArenaNet. The game can be both rewarding and challenging for beginners and experienced players alike.
In the story you are a young hero selected by the King of Your nation, Ascalon, to meet with the Kings Son, Rurik after your home nation has been ransacked by a war which lasted 2 years. Then fight your way through Tyria which the world basically consisting of towering Mountains in the Shiverpeaks to the murky swamps of Kryta fighting alongside your friends or maybe computer-controlled characters. Whatever the way you wish to play this adventure you will not be unsatisfied by this epic saga.
However, for those people who like the competitive side of gaming you can play Guild battles between 2 teams of players in changing and graphically immense scenery competing for leadership on the Guild ladder. This shows another step forward by ArenaNet in the fast growing world of online-RPG. “Its action packed, its Tactical, and its sporting” Gamespot.
Creating your character whether it is a PvP or a PvE you will never be short for choice. With simply hundreds of different combinations of faces, hair styles, body size and skin colour it is almost impossible to see people who look exactly the same, unless you count armour alone, also because you have more than 1 profession this will also change your appearance. The first part of the game is where you are in a tutorial called ‘Pre-searing’, aptly named after the event when the whole world of Kryta falls into a massive Guild War between nations. This level enables you to get to grips with quests, missions, controls and basic gaming. However, if you are an experienced player it can get very boring if you are constantly making new characters to try out combinations.
As soon as you enter ‘Post-searing’ you arrive 2 years later in your home nation, ransacked by a race named Charr this starts you off on the story line where you join teams to do missions and play through the game, either with friends or total strangers. Fighting your way through these missions with total strangers can be incredibly fun, especially since some can be from other nations but you have to put your trust in that person that he/she completes their role in the team well e.g. Monk heals everyone and does not tend to fight.
Overall the story has to be one of the best ones around, especially since most other games may have lots of missions but lack cohesion. The missions vary in difficultness which add an edge to the game.
The graphics in the game are brilliant. They absolutely shocked me as I would have expected much lower quality seeming as you don’t have to pay monthly. However, with great graphics means a good pc so I found out that sometimes it crashed because my pc was not powerful enough but only did it twice in 2 weeks. The attention to detail on the armour was so good that I could make out every symbol on the armour and even change the colour! Another fault I have discovered on the graphic front is that due to the constant internet connection sometimes your character slows up when loading and you only get bits of them at a time, this was only noticed though because of the supremacy of the graphics which made it stick out like a sore thumb.
The enjoyment factor is immense. I absolutely loved it. I felt compelled to carry on playing as I was so in-to the story line. Fighting also helped this as you were moving around, hitting and killing things which gave you a great deal of joy. On the other hand the music just after pre-searing can be quite depressing as so can the scenery because it is dark and grey and very slow and calm music.
Other aspects in the game like being a member of a Guild or PvP makes the game complete. Being a member of a Guild gives the game a ‘home’ like feeling as it makes you feel though other people are relying on you especially in PvP which is where you don’t fight computer controlled monsters but other people from around the world through the internet.
The game play for the game is the best I have seen. It uses the standard controls for most online RPG’s but uses some of its own like short-cut keys which allow you to observe people battling or see which of your friends is online, a system never before seen in the world of RPG’s. The game play also allows people not to have to slog in the hours to gain levels but to simply gain a single overall level which increases your attribute points so you can increase or change the powerfulness of your character. The skill combinations which you can make are endless as you have 2 professions with about 75 skills each which mean you can have up to 150 skills in your possession however you may only have 8 at a time in your skill bar.
The overall good points about the game are that it has absolutely stunning graphics and an exciting and compelling story line that gets you incredibly involved, it feels almost as it has been written by real story writers. However, with all things come bad points, can be very annoying when you want to do a mission and yet in a town dedicated to making groups for the mission no one will join you also the game can slow down in speed and crash sometimes due to internet connection.
“If you only buy one game this year it may as well be Guild Wars. It’s got what it takes to keep you happily entertained for a very long time.” Greg Kasavin – Editor of Gamespot.com
