I will be sending out the files to the starting players this weekend. The scenario is aready designed and formatted for Pbem. Passwords and detailed instructions will come with the email when the files go out.

After the players get these emails and they have questions I would ask that they please post them here on the forum unless it is something you don't want your posiible opponent to know you are asking about ;)

Double D,

A small problem: I've installed WAWv8.01 and the main screen loads, but when I click on play SPWAW I get a tank firing sound but it never goes anywhere. If I go into my directory and click directly on the .exe file it aborts and tells me it's missing the d3d9.dll file, reinstalling may correct the problem. I've re-installed but it hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

Never Mind.......I still can't get it to run through the Start Menu, but if I clcik on Mech.exe I can cut past the start menu and get it loaded. At least now I can support the Tourney!!

Looking Forward to it. Any drastic changes between version 7.1 and 8.01 that drive a change in the way we play?

Ok, I'm thick - I will ask the obvious question!

When you say points count, are you talking about victory hex points??

Yo All,
Just a quick clarification...do mortars count for the first scenario? I want to purchase Polish infantry platoon or company when my turn arrives but they have the mortars as a section of the squad.
Just verifying. Thank you.

Hogg

My understanding (and I am sure DD will clarify this), is that the scenario comes with your units allready pre-purchased, like a scenario.

That is the only way I can see him forcing us to use (in later rounds) all cavalry, or all wheeled units or all tracked units.

And, knowing DD's devious mind, I suspect that the bottom of the oob's have been trawled for novel and unusual units!

Hogg is correct. The scenario's are all predesigned by me and all units already purchased. I have all the files ready to go out along with detailed instructions but I am watining on clarification of someone's email address. I will be sending the other 7 matchups out after I post this so if you are one of the ones listed on the tournament page under Round 1 you should be getting an email very shortly.

Yo Double Deuce and Hogg,
Thank you for clearing that up. I had misread an earlier post to understand we would be purchasing our own troops. To be honest, I prefer the predesigned, as that should help prevent anyone from saying "unfair-He bought a nuke", etc!

Seriously, my only request is that any scenario where Wild Bill is on the defense, please do not include mines! He has this mystical control so that as all your scouts and lowly infantry go by, nothing happens, but as soon as that key unit steps in the hex--BOOM! :dead:
During MCSE when we were discussing an idea of a dedication to him, someone who tested one too many WB scenarios wanted to mail him a defused mine!

Best wishes,

Total points = killing enemy units and victory hexes. It will make for some very agressive playing as the object will be gaining as many points as you can. Sparing the lives of your men to fight another day is not the objective this round.

It doesn't matter if you win, lose or draw. What matters is did you get more total points than the other 7 players in your group (either attackers or defenders)? Only the top 4 point totals in each "group" will move on to Round 2.

Oh! and by the way, its your opponent I am trying to get an updated email on so your file hasn't gone out yet :o

Pretty much. Posts are not showing up right away by people I have given access to so I suppose it is a moderation setting. I just haven't had time to dig deeper until I got this tourney up and running.

You had me worried for a minute there- been checking my e.mail about every five minutes for the last 24hrs - my isp will be relieved!

Steeler - don't relax too much - yes, you will be getting a pre-bought scenario, but, knowing DD, your force will be composed of some way-out units - elite girl scouts with razor sharp cookies, or something similar!

If anyone has trouble with the files please let me know. Many of you may experience the "OOB Corruption" message. JUst select to override it. This is OK and it as much to to do with the fact that I created the actual secre PBEM game on my PC. This causes warinings since the game is being played on 2 other PC's and mine is out of the rotation.

That's not right. The forum settings are absolute; the person either has access or they don't. Give me an example of someone who has posted and their message is not showing up. I will look into it.

At double deuces request, have thought about doing an after action report, and some screen shots.

Have downloaded and isntalled hypersnap dx, and it works fine.

Cant get screen shots of game, however.

System seems to be that you should have the window you want on top, active, then maximise hypersnap, hit capture, hypersnap minimises and allows you to make image capture of screen underneath.

All very well, but alt-tabbing out of spwaw minimises it, meaning that when you run a capture, hypersnap minimises to show you the desktop, not the game screen.

How do you get around this????

I've started keeping notes for an AAR of my match as well. It occurs to me that these AARs can't really be posted until after everyone has finished round 1, otherwise we may spoil the surprises for some folks. Where did you download hypersnap from?

But I can't figure out how to make spwaw the active screen, after quitting out to activate hypersnap.

Yo All,
I use Paint Shop Pro for screen captures usually(or for just one shot, the ol' print-scrn works) and then I crop the pic but for this game I hadn't remembered to do that. We are on turn 6 so from this point forward I will do it. I typed up notes for my own AAR last night summing up the 5 turns played already...I used to do this all the time with PBEM mainly as an educational lesson for myself--what worked, what didn't, etc.

Coupled with screenshots very valuable. I will post mine if anyone is interested. :D

On another note, I realize we play both sides. Does that mean same exact scenario just switch sides? Curious...thank you. :crosseye:

And without giving anything away to the defenders(I am attacking) I am having a difficult time reaching the bridge. Yo, DD, how about rerouting the Polish Airborne Brigade from Arnhem to this battle? :cheeky:

Best wishes,

Actually you will only be playing the scenario 1 time BUT you should know your scores are not compared to the other group. This means your total score is judged according the other attackers if your are an attacker or other defenders if you are a defender.

Hogg,
To use Hyper-snap with SPWAW you will need to do the following. Start up hyper-snap. Start your Spwaw game. Zoom in or out in the Spwaw active window until you get the size screen you want. Hit the Scroll-Lock key. Now Now hit Alt-Tab and you should be either back on the desktop or looking at the hyper-snap shot. If this doesn't work, email me or send a private message and I think I can get it working for you.
Good luck,
RB :crosseye:

Even though we are still waiting for 3 games to finish and they actually have until March 2 to do so, I have decided to post for your viewing pleasure, the results so far. You can see them by going HERE (http://www.warfarehq.com/steel_panthers/sp_tourn/hobhwt.shtml).

Remember, the 4 highest scores for both the attacker and the defender advance to Round 2.

Yo DoubleDeuce,

Thank you! :) That's the fun of the tournament--to follow the rankings!.... :D

Quick questions, though. What happens if a game doesn't finish by your deadline? Also, what if it happens in a later round, where one person up and quits or doesn't respond(life does interfere sometimes)...Do BOTH players get disqualified? :o :crosseye:  As for the three games in progress...any updates?
Thank you!

Hey DD:

Do we get Ladder credit for these battles?

And, for that matter, can you explain the point system you are using, the rating system and the ranks? Basically, how about a refresher course for those of us new to Ladders? Thanks!

Yes you do BUT we are not using the regular ladder system for end battle reports though since the scenarios are custom designed, NOT balanced and players do not have a choice in the side they are given. Because the SP Ladder here is still fairly new I have decided to just give 10 Bonus Ladder points for each Round a player participates in and completes. Giving a larger amount would interfere to much with what has been earned to date by people reporting normal ladder games. As membership grows and the ladder totals rise, future tournaments will be worth more points on the ladder.

Actually that is a very tough question. Basically we take the End Game Reports that are submitted to us and enter the data into a specially written program (Thanks to Scipio :D ). This program mostly takes the Level of Victory and the Number of Turns completed and generates a score for both players. Every couple days we update the website with the latest database information.

More detailed information on how actual ranks, medals and ratings are detemined an be found HERE (http://www.warfarehq.com/table_of_ranks.shtml) There is a little more to it than this but this should give a better understanding. It doesn't specify the SP adjustments like some of the other games but the TOAW information is very close. Just look at the Profile pages of some who have competed Ladder Games and look at the Game Resport Details. This will give you a good idea of how points are caculated.

That's pretty cool stuff there DD. It really shows alot of thought went into the Ladder system. Very impressive.

...One problem though, I got gypped of points in my first Ladder Battle because the battle ended early (at 19 turns) when I captured all the VHs and killed my opponent's A0 unit. If I had let the game go one turn longer, I would have gotten more Ladder points.

Guilty. :OHNO:

I prefer to think of "memorization" as having good reading comprehension skills. If I read something once (e.g., a rulebook) and there is a benefit for me in it, I'll remember it. hehe It's not really a memorization issue. Besides, I like to "discuss" differing interpretations of the rules. :D

OK, it looks like both Valkyri and VikingNo2 will advance barring overly convincing information from the players of the outstanding game.

Round 2 will tentatively start late tomorrow March 5th (at least that is when I will try to get the files out). The scenario is already set up. Those who were Player 1 last round will be Player 2 this round and vice versa. I have also randomly assigned opponents. Website will be updated sometime late tonight.
