A message from a relative noob to all you lurkers out there!

Come on in, the water is lovely!

I know you are out there, 'cos I see threads with hundreds of views, but not many replies.

Our esteemed leader, Double Deuce, is organising a knock-out tournament, exclusive to warfare hq SPWAW members!

Sign up, folks, especially if you are a lurker and haven't been active on the site yet - this would be a great way to stick your toe in the water!

And remember, this is not Counterstrike

We value new players - we were all new once!

And if you don't want to sign up, then whether you are new, old, lurker or active, at least make an old man very happy by replying to this post to say hello!

Cheers,

Hogg.

hello :D
i played steel panther only against the computer and i'm researching someone to play against, i really don't know if to suscribe to a tournament is really suitable as it will be my first prbem experience with steel panther. Wel if some you can help me for the first turns cause i already tried to pbem previously and i experienced problems but goblin answered me and he said that i had to send four files situated in the email folder, but i didn't give it try since so if there is someone kind enough who agrees to give it a try with me
we don't need to play a full game just one turn or two to make sure i can handle the system.
then if all is ok i might consider signing up for the tournament, i don't know when is the dead line for the registration but i hope we have a few days for doing this

Viridomaros, I'll be glad to play a few turns with you to help you get the PBEM down. Just go ahead and start something and send it to me. You can find my e-mail on the ladder. I'm using v8.01.

Try posting on the Matrix forum and see if someone there in europe can burn and send you a copy on CD. I think I saw it mentioned there before. Try this thread CD OFFER (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=550561&mpage=1&key=copy). I believe the guy who might be able to help is in the UK. You should also just post a new thread with your need there. Many posts from the last couple of months were lost recently but I do know there were people offerring to help out in europe at one time.

thanks for this information
but i really don't want to bother another player with my problems
i'm going to start downloading, and if i go up to 10 gb due to this my speed will just come down to something like 56k/sec in place of 350k/sec
well let's go for this

ps: i'm pleased to know that the wargame community is ready to help new players with this system

Trust me when I say you are not bothering anyone. I know there are several players in the US with DSL/Cable who keep a stock of burned CD's on hand to send out to new players. I think there are couple in Europe who do this as well but the names escape me at this moment.

i started downloading anyway and i am on 62%
i remember last time i download this it took me 30 min for the 450 mb of the game and about one hour for a stuff that was sized 20mb ( i think it is the h2h mod or something like that)
right now the speed is at 51k/sec still 50 min to wait for the end
hopefully i just installed combat mission barbarossa to berlin :cheeky:

i suppose i should delete the previous version shoudn't i
could you tell me if there is another thing to do before installing the game?

Hogg
14 Feb 04, 15:23
You can delete the previous version, or, if you wanted to, just install v.08 to a different file location from the default one - if you wanted to.

Don't forget to delete using the add/remove program function in windows - this isn't a dos based game like steel panthers 3!

Let me know how you get on with e.mailing - let me know if you need any help!

Cheers,

Hogg.

dammed :dead:
when i was at 99% of the process
a dialog box show up saying there wasn't enough space to copy it and since that i can't find where it has gone if i have it, i think i lost all and i have to go download it one more time grrrrrrrrrr
when you will write the faq be sure to put that the first quality that is required for playing steel panther is patience!!!
ranger i hope i will be able to email you today but due to this problem i'm wondering if it will be possible
hopefully for me i found another link where i can download at 350 k/sec only 20 min for the whole thing much better :cheeky:

The easy way to e.mail a game is to go to your e.mail folder, which will be something like this

C:\Matrix Games\Steel Panthers World At War\EMail

If you accept all the default options at install time.

There, for each game you have saved, you will find four files, all called the same name, with different extensions.

For example, if you saved a game in slot 6, the files will be called

email6.aux
email6.cmt
email6.dat
email6.rec

Zip and email all four files to your opponent, and you should be fine.

When you receive the files, the reverse is true - just detach the files from the e.mail into the above folder, and overwrite the old files.

Hope this helps!

in fact i got to download the whole (420mb) twice because the first time it crashed just at the end as i said but the second time it only took me 20 min to download, the only thing that still worry me is that i have patched it to version 8.1 but when i launch the game it is written 8.0 i don't if it is normal or not :hmmm:

Glad to hear you finallly got it. Once you have 8.0 downloaded and installed it should be much easier to keep the game updated through the "True Update" function on your SPWAW Menu screen. When you update to 8.01 it will not show on your screen anywhere I do not think but if you try the "True Update" link it will let you know you have the latest version.

Hogg,
I'm doing alright. Are you playing in DD's tournament? I'm up against Steeler13. The short quick style is a little different from the usual 15 to 30 minute per turn games. Don't have to worry so much about if you missed any units or not. :)

Yup, I got VikingNo2 - a big fish!

Looking at the setup of the scenarios, I just hope Double Deuce's ears are burning with all the cursing and muttering that is going on this side of the Atlantic!

Yo Hogg and DoubleDeuce and everyone else...
This looks great! In the past year I've led a team of testers in the MCSE, witnessed a WHOLE new version of SPWAW, participated in a tournament, received a new mag called Armchair General, mailed out over 30 SPWAW cd's in exchange for donations to DAV and children's hospital, and seen two NEW forums created for us SP fanatics! And last but not least, Grigsby, the great one himself, is making an Axis and Allies type game so I can pull my A&A buddies into computer wargaming. :cheeky:
WHat a great time for strategy and tactics wargamers! (as opposed to the FPS games which will ALWAYS be popular).
Thanks to all. I look forward to challenging battles with each of you as I climb the top of Mount Surib---er, the ladder! :-)

Hi guys, recently joined up for the SP ladder and not been playing very long but I'm active on a few other ladders here. Really enjoying this game that I've overlooked for quite some time and have got one pbem game under my belt after getting shellacked by VikingNo2.
Look forward to getting a few other games going but was wondering if there's some kind of listing anywhere of which scenarios are somewhat balanced? I'm running the SPWAW 8.1 ver. and have just recently downloaded the SPWW2.

Hey, Triaxe, welcome aboard!

Don't worry about VikingNo2, he is an experienced player, but new here.

Rotten s*d knocked me out of the tournament. sniff.

As far as spwaw and balanced scenarios go, v8 and above seem to be pretty good with their text introductions to each scenario - ie the text that comes up when you click on a scenario in the list.

Well designed scenarios (and there are loads!) give you some idea about the balance of the scenario, usually at the beggining - something like 'if played as a two player game, the italian player has the edge'.

Also, the scenarios creator is usually shown in the scenario list, at the end of the line after the scenario name, in brackets. It is not a bad idea to find a designer whose work you like, and look for their scenarios. Look for Redleg and WBW (the colonel, Wild Bill Wilder). They are both pretty good names to start with!
:cheeky:

Cheers,

Hogg.

I'm new here. Recruits learn to follow orders. Hope to see some of you on the battlefield. The ladder is just a ranking system, isn't it? If so, then I will have to go check it out.
I was going to say that if you ever run into that copying problem again, just do a search on your computer for files greater than 400 mb. It will be in some temporary internet folder, probably with some cryptic alphanumeric name.
Sorry to hear about your downloading limits. I hear from my AF friend in the UK about different schemes for pricing phones, etc. Here in America we just whore out every resource. 13 miles per gallon? No problem! Showers big enough for 4 people... great! Unlimited broadband in millions of homes. Super.
Sorry if I have offended anyone. Just ammuses me how some characteristics of America are so different due to the blessings we have and yet we have no clue that they are even there. It's not innate to the people, since we are a people of peoples. It's just a young country with some unusual circumstances (haven't been scawbling over tracts of land for thousands of years, we just buy alaska for pennies on the dollar).
Oh, don't think I'm an elitist. I've been abroad and like a lot of it (not the UK weather). I own a Kymco motorscooter so don't throw the mpg thing in my face. $1.60 at the pump a week suckas.
