I just finished playing DP's latest installment and really enjoyed it. Don't read this if you plan on playing this scenario soon...I don't want to ruin the fun for you. :)
Except for a quick bathroom break, I kept the clock running continuously as requested.
The mission is to hold a key junction with C/2-4 Cav against an Iraqi brigade heading south into Saudi Arabia.
My plan was to push my infantry up the west edge to the objective where'd they would setup up in SBF defensive positions on a ridge covering the road from the west and the valley/depression to the north. I'd pust the Armor up the east edge and plan on an ambush from the hills NE of the objective. I wanted to use the HQ section as a quick reserve and I setup the engineers in the objective covering the north road. My arty I setup south of the objective to keep it out of view.
I pushed my Kiowa's up north ahead of the groups scouting for enemy. I lost 1 Kiowa to a DRT Team southwest of the objective and 1 M1068 Fire Direction Vehicle to a DRT Team directly south of the objective. There were 3 or 4 DRT Teams setup south of the objective -- all of which I destroyed to prevent them calling in arty.
Once on the objective, I decided to reposition my 2 tank platoons away from the hills to cover the center and northwest portions of my zone. I setup one platoon on a little ridge just off the north road a few thousand meters north of the objective. This position offered a good view north with a quick escape route into the depression to the south...which I used a few times. The other platoon ended up in the hills on the west side of the zone covering both the north and west roads. I pushed the remaining Kiowa north of my zone to identify the Iraqi approach route. The Kiowa located the Iraqi artillery which came in very handy later in the scenario.
I was in position at around the 39 minute mark. The first Iraqi scouts appeared at about 55:00 and were quickly destroyed. At around 1:28:00, i lost my second Kiowa to the Iraqi advancing column's. Unfortunately, I pushed him a little too far north and didn't get a great read on the Iraqi intentions.
At about 1:45:00 the Iraqi attack pushed forward...and didn't really have a chance. It was all over in about 10 minutes. My defensive positions ended up being better than I thought and I stopped the Iraqi's before they could even dismount...if they even planned to. My northern tank platoon stopped the assault coming down the north road with the loss of 2 tanks (they were killed when I moved them to finish off the column coming from the west). My western tank platoon with the help of my M3A1 CFV's took pretty good care of the western assault, though the entire platoon was killed when I moved them to avoid artillery.
Once the main assault was stopped, I fired my MLRS on the artillery positions. I eliminated just about an entire group in 10 seconds...it was awesome watching 12 or 13 red x's appear so quickly. I then pushed the remainder of my tank platoon north to scout and destroy the other arty units. Victory was achieved at about 2:50:00.
Final numbers:
Iraqi's:
-Only had 5 Gvazdika left at end
US Lost:
2 AT Teams
4 MIA1
2 M3A1
1 M1068
2 Kiowa
Overall, this was a fun scenario. Nice job DP. A couple of impressions:
1. I liked the new sounds, very nice
2. The DRT took longer to kill than I expected. I assume that's the KB's database at work. Also very nice.
3. It wasn't particularly difficult, but fun
4. You have to kill some arty to win. It took me a few minutes to realize the assault was through and move north to hunt down the arty. Just something to keep in mind so you're not sitting around all night.
5. Not sure if there was a purpose for the engineers. I was hoping I could have them lay a minefield, but it didn't look like I could. Did I miss something? Or were they just supposed to be used for support?
6. I actually fired the MLRS at the western assault, but missed timed and just caught the tail of the column. It's tough to project 5 minutes out like that.
7. Playing without stopping the clock was a nice addition and an added challenge.
Thanks again for a great scenario.
