For all you SPWAW H2H fans out there here is some vey good news.
According to recent posts by "Warrior" on the Matrix Games Forum, Panzer Leo is planning to do an H2Hfr update for v8! It won't be a whole new version of H2H, just an update. I am sure we are all looking forward to this and any additional information will be posted here to keep everyone informed.

Could some experienced player describe what are the advantages of Leo's mod?
The mod is very good. He has redone the units pictures, and reorganized the OOB's. It is specifically designed for H2H play, although I find it much more balanced when against the computer.
The mod has a different feel, sounds, units, etc, so if alot of fun. Leo tried to enforce rarity thru pricing though. Units that were more common during the war were given a price break. So, instead of reflecting how well they fight, the unit cost reflects how they fight for some units, and how rare they were for others, plus a bit of both for yet other units. This makes a balanced battle harder.
You can get 2 companies of M4 tanks for 1 company of PzIV's, and 1.75 companies of T34's for 1 PzIV company. The German player then must face a massive onslaught of enemy tanks every time. Realistic, yes, balanced, no. Alot of the guys spot the German player some points in PBEM games, usually 15% give or take.
I still recommend the mod, it is quite enjoyable. The encyclopedia pictures alone are worth looking at.

Thanks for the info, Goblin. It sounds like the mod is worth the download.
Aren't there many unit data changes? What are the most significant in your opinion?
Prices are the most significant, but he changed other things as well. The 50mm KwK L42 and L60 both had their PEN's reduced, which makes fighting the Sov tanks a real pain. He changed the artillery around. Very expensive, and runs out of ammo very quickly. This encourages a higher delay time, thus firing less rounds. Instead of the US plotting in .2, the player will probably purposefully shift the fire a couple times until it is .5 or more thus firing in the half round, and saving some ammo.
Remember to make a complete copy of 7.1 and install H2H into the copy after renaming it.

Another little nugget: You can move and fire MMGs in the same round.
Yes! That rules! You can finally use the MG in a manuever/attack role. Move it up, lay supressing fire, and move the platoon up around the gun. Very nice.

Yes, the well known tactic of using an MG42 on a static tripod as an assault rifle!
;) :dead: :cheeky:
lol
A turn represents 'several minutes' of real time. I have seen footage of three guys grabbing the MG, tripod and all, and moving it 30 yards forward in just a few seconds. I would imagine that a few minutes is enough time to move an MG and fire a few rounds...

Do only MMGs have this 'move and shoot' -feature, or does it apply to HMGs as well?
Just mediums. There is an argument for legitimately using heavies in the move and shoot manner also, but he did it form MMG's only. However, he also boosted infantry casualties caused by MG fire, so HMG's really are murderous defensive weapons now. This is especially true for squads running in the open.

Point accepted, old boy, and I apologise!
I have played the pre v.8 version of h2hfr, and it is certainly a different game - different feel, different kill rates and the like.
I must admit, I did feel guilty playing it - it seemed I was being unfaithful to matrix. lol.
So, from a realism point of view, who is right - vanilla spwaw or h2hfr? - and why are they so different?
;)
Cheers,
Hogg.

Welcome, JD.
I think there's a group of us that frequents a lot of forums. :)
Hogg- No need to apologize. I don't think either game is 'right'. Especially not after the 8.0 'fixes' to the OOB's. If they somehow combined the two, and/or both stopped using pricing to reflect rarity, then that would be awesome.
JD- Welcome! I just cannot help it...WHQ is like a car wreck you just can't look away from... ;)
Belisarius- Just three forums for me... I'm not Les... :p

Also, in H2H.fr your platoon HQ units are usually a half squad with maybe a rifle and some grenades. Not much of a fighting force, so this forces you to keep them safe and sound to do their job of rallying the rest of the platoon rather than being out front blasting away.
Crew were also increased in value so you have to think twice about just using them as cheap cannon fodder and scouts.
One of the other major differences with H2H is that there is no "willie" meter [the * that tells you when you are spotted by the enemy].
This makes recon and scouting more important - as well as the use of Commandos behind enemy lines.
No longer are you able to figure out which hex an unspotted enemy is in from triangulation of the "willie" meter.
Also you are not able to get to a hex where you are spotted then back up one hex to safety.
Personally, I would like to see 8.0 with no "willie" meter (or at least the ability to toggle it ON/OFF).
The "willie" meter makes the game too easy. It pretty much becomes impossible to ambush anyone or sneak around behind enemy lines.
There are other ways of defending against enemies in the backfield, but that is for another discussion.

I can only still seem to find version 7.1 fr.Not as far as I know. I believe they have him working on other things that are preventing his work on it but not sure. One thing thats not so good is that he hasn't posted over at the Matrix SP Forums since Oct 2003. :o
