View Full Version : A Couple of Questions on Formations
I suspect that the answers to both these questions are to be found in the TOAW manual. However as my second-hand copy of COW came without a manual (the previous owner must have eaten it or something), I'd appreciate any assitance.
1) What's the maximum number of units that you can place under a single formation? I've got a vauge memory of reading that the game engine has trouble with more then 12.
2) Is there any effect if a formation doesn't have a HQ?
p. 114
"You have 32 unit slots in each formation. Please do not use them all. Open slots must exist for units to break down. If you fill up your formation unit list, the units of the formation will not be able to break down. In most cases, limit the number of line combat units (like infantry regiments) in a formation to no more than 12 : any more and the programmed opponent code will not use all of the units efficiently in some situations. You may actually want this effect in some situations. Overloaded formations may tend to use Soviet style echelon attacks."
p. 117
"Headquarters Units
Depending upon the effect you are trying to achieve, headquarters units do not need to have command groups authorized, but if they do, their formations are likely to be forced to reorganize if all assigned command groups in the headquarters are eliminated. In game terms, use of command groups allows a scenario designer to build a vulnerability into a force's formations. We recommend taking advantage of this feature, so go ahead and assign two command groups (this will probably work better than one unless you really want your command structure to be fragile) to each HQ unit."
So sayeth the Manual, amen ;)

That was quick! Thanks a lot.
