Do you think game ports are a good or a bad thing? I'm particularly talking in the hand-held gaming market. There seems to be a lack of originality and just another way to milk a successful franchise. Personally, I don't want the exact same game on my hand-held as my console
Depends on the game. Sports or competative games, yes. But something like FF12 for example would be dumb to port. Story driven games you wouldn't play more than once (in general).
I, for one, would like to see more ports for the PSP. Especially of older PS1 games. With the PS3 coming out, there has to be a limit as to how far back Sony's backwards-compatibility can go, and besides, I'd like to be able to play some of those great games on the go.
ports are good now and then. But thats how they are going to get the console into the market. with games they know which were a hit , by porting them should attract more gamers.
there will be plenty of original games coming out, just wait for the uk release.
yeah ports are good aslong as the price is right and its not an exact port
I hate Ports. Make a new game already damn lazy developers. What's the fun in playing a game you've likely already conquered several times?

i want ports of older ps1 games too, id love to play tekken, tombraider and the rest of the cream on the go, i can see what people are saying about originality but every system has a mix of ports and new gaming they can both co-exist quite nicely :P
give it time and the new games will be on the psp, its still very early days
Certain games are defitinely worth being ported onto a handheld system. I would also love to see a Tekken game or Street Fighter ported on PSP. And the game that at the moment i'm most looking forward to, Tales of Eternia, is a port, so i guess i can't complain too much.
But other's like Munch's Oddysee and Jet Set Radio shouldn't have been ported to GBA; the graphics aren't the same and the game doesn't feel as good as the original version made for consoles. And snowboarding games on the smaller screen are just plain wrong! You couldn't even see the tricks you were doing and you can't see whether you're about to crash into a tree or something.
For some games there is a big loss of quality when ported which affect's your gameplay, but for others, you kinda feel glad that you have a miniature version of your favourite console game to carry around with you.
But those ports onto the GBA I wouldn't even consider ports. Whole different game if you ask me. I think maybe a few ports here and there would be fine but right now i'd like to see anything but a port on the PSP.

Part of the reason I bought a psp is that I get to play some of my favourite games on the move.
Perhaps there is some sense in adapting the game to the new format and even changing or adding elements to the gameplay. A straight port of a game would mean new gamers get to enjoy, but veteran gamers will get little from it.
but right now i'd like to see anything but a port on the PSP.
I was going to say that, but then i looked at the games that i have and the only one that is a true port is THUG 2 Remix (although i don't really have it yet). Games like Metal Gear Ac!d, Dynasty Warriors and NFSUR, are just games that are continuing in their series.
Dynasty Warriors is the same game I don't care which Chinese emperors you put in it it's still the same. Metal Gear is one of the true original games. Take a look though. All the sports titles are basically ports. And NFSU is basically the same on PSP as console. How many truly original PSP games did we have at launch? 4 or 5?

the DS had ports too (if your trying to compare the psp with it) :

While I like Nintendo...I blame them more for ports then I do Sony. NES classic series, the mario games all have been ported to death. I'm sick of those damned dirty apes. I think the GBA is King of the Port.
Only if they're sold for a cheaper price and are good. Either way they're not really going to affect what games you can and cannot buy does it?
GBA had millions of original games. Absolutely tons of originals. DS yes has ports too, but look at the Ports to Originals ratio of the DS or GBA. Its very low. Now look at the Ports to Originals on the PSP. There's like twice as many ports as original games ATLEAST!
