The Germans as the War entered its final months began to give serious thought to what would happen to the Fatherland when the Allies overran them.
Many thought that Germany would be split up into semi independent regions with only agriculture and light industry allowed and full military occupation the order of the day.
So perhaps the fact that just two German states emerged (three if you include Austria) from the War, albeit under the ultimate control of the Allies for some years, was not too bad a result compared to what might have happened.

Another one was the saying 'Enjoy the War, because the Peace will be worse.'
