Sorry it took so long to get back to you with comments on your map tutorial, but I just now had the time to try it out.
Excellent job! It was easy to follow for the most part, but I have a few suggestions:
Start of with the list of programs needed for mapmaking and web addresses for them. This allows the user to immediately set everything up!
Next, you might want to warn people that step 1.2.d can take a LONG time depending on the size of the map you are making and the CPU power you have. I'm STILL pegged at 100% CPU for over 10 minutes and it hasn't made any progress, unless I did something really wrong! I have redone the steps in VTBuilder 5x now, and it always snags on the merge elevation step - it says there are 1,437,601 gaps and 1,199 lines. Does this sound right to you?
Anyway, so far so good, and I went ahead and went throguh the motions with the other steps, and I know how to do the steps after creating the base files, so everything looks pretty good!

Thanks. The document is still in DRAFT form and I haven't released it to public. Only you and Pat got copies. I am still getting a few things in line before making it available to everyone (I don't want any mistakes in there).

Wilco. I will add.

I don't have a super computer, far from it, and the merge and resample elevation step never takes more than a few seconds on my machine. So if its taking you 10 minutes and you are getting all those gaps and lines (I have never gotten that), something is wrong.
First, don't d/l too much STRM data at once. 2 degrees by 2 degrees is enough, maybe too much. This way the data file VTBuilder is working with isn't overwhelmingly large.
Second, step 1.2.c. is very important. Make sure you are selecting 1 degree by 1 degree. The format in the 'Origin and Size' entry box (via 'Area Tool', 'Numeric Values') should be: (XX.YYYYY, ZZ.WWWW), (1.0,1.0)
XX.YYYY = west longitude in Degree.Degree Fraction format
ZZ.WWWW = south latitude in Degree.Degree Fraction format
If you want me to check the STRM data you are using send me the zip file and the west longitude, south latitude you want and I will run it thru my VTBuilder and see if I can get you a good 'ArcInfo ASCII Gird' file. Send this to:

This is good to hear. As I said, this is still a draft and once its 'error free', I will release to public.

"He (Sen. Kerry) was for the joke before he was against it."
I think the issue with Curt's VTBuilder experience was that he didn't have 1x1 degree of data from STRM. I will make this clearer in my map making manual.
RE the new sig.
You see this attached photo? Classic stuff from our deployed boys, proving once again that they, not the politicians, are the real leaders and protectors of this country! :flag:

Sweet!!
Its my understanding that the unit in the photo is Guard. If they are anything like my (old) Guard unit, most of their soldiers probably have college degrees and more than a few probably have Master Degrees, PhDs, Law Degrees, etc. They aren't there because they are stupid but because they are patriots. I'm not big into politics (despite living in DC), but that dude Kerry and many of his buddies have got to get a f*cking clue and learn a thing or two about the actual guys executing their policies. Just my opinion.

I have heard two very interesting statistics since Kerry's gaff.
1) As a population, the US military has an average of 2.5 years more schooling than their age group in the US population at large (present company exluded :) )
2) Of the 535 members of congress, only 7 have children in the military.
Even as this forum's token lib, I found Curt's pic funny and had to laugh. But to be fair, I must point out that if you've seen the surrounding video and seen the full context, it was clear he was insulting the president and not the troops.
If you want to see some well-articulated rebuttals read the article here (http://www.johnkerry.com/news/articles/newsarticle.html?id=77) and scroll down a bit to view the Countdown commentary on the same page.
