View Full Version : H3 Multiplayer Server up Again
Ok, my old server is now running a H3 3.7.0 server 24/7. For the time being, if you want a different database, track me down and I'll put up what you want.
IP: 72.21.228.42
Port: 14343 - PDB aka Players Database

The above image indicates whether there are any people at HarpGamer ready and willing to undertake an Multiplayer mission. The games need not take place on the Stratsims server, this can function as a general meeting place to set up MP games, and requires only a fairly recent web browser. Refreshing this page will in most cases indicate the current chat status.
http://harpgamer.com/images/chattersYes.jpg Is what you will see if there are players chatting
http://harpgamer.com/images/chattersNo.jpg Is what you will see when no players are chatting
Either way head over when you want to play!
If the server does appear to crash, chase me down at #harpgamer on the NewNetIRC network or e-mail me at sysop@tgp.net. There is a link to Java IRC client at HarpGamer (http://www.harpgamer.com/HARP_chat.php).
If you want to see scenarios added/removed/swapped out please e-mail me the scenarios in a single zip file to sysop@tgp.net and I'll make the changes. Make sure to tell me which database the scenarios are for!
Good stuff, Tony. Thanks.

Right on!
First night back with the new server and we were able to help bring on a new player. Welcome aboard, Cpt. Aubrey.
We took the PlayersDB scenario, Power Sweep, by David Steinmeyer out for a spin to break him in. Jim used some interesting "bait and switch" tactics and we managed to exchange fire resulting in his loss of SSN Spartan before the game crashed us out. Oh, well. :)
Hope to see you around soon enough, Capt Aubrey.

Hey, and a hearty welcome back to Steve (a.k.a. Choowee) :smoke:
He dropped into the HarpGamer IRC chat room and we got a game going right away. We played Freek Scheper's Katyusha Hunt from his latest battleset, The Second Lebanese War, made with the PlayersDB.
I played the Israelis against his Iranians.
With nearly the entire region lined up against me, I had to employ stealth in order to reach my targets. I approached the Iranian border at low altitude and decided to try and fly between two radar sites. I had my AEW to give me a good aerial picture of the situation. The ingress seemed okay and I thought myself pretty smart for remaining undetected. However, I had been spotted and interceptors were on their way!
Fortunately, my aircraft weren't designated FIGHTER-bombers for nothing. They beat off eight interceptors with Sparrow and AMRAAM salvoes before continuing on to destroy the facilities surrounding Tehran and the nuclear testing plant.
A great scenario. Thanks, Freek. And thanks to Tony and HarpGamer for kindly hosting the ANW server.

A big "Welcome Aboard" goes out to the newest commander in the ANW Fleet, Capt. Fred from Down Under. :smoke:
Fred signed in and we played nearly 6 glorious hours. We started off with the tried and true staple of the PlayersDB, Dave Steinmeyer's Power Sweep scenario three times as an introduction. In his very first battle, Fred soon found himself with a lone SSK Kobben and up against a Victor II, Tango, and Charlie. Through dogged determination and deft handling, he managed to eke out a draw! We killed one another with our final salvo of torpedoes. Fred is certainly a commander to be reckoned with! :)
We then moved on to Dave's other scenario classic, Lone Wolf (also made with the PlayersDB). Even though we suffered numerous server-related crashes, we still had a good time.
Thanks to Dave for the scenario, Fred for the competition, and Tony for the server. A great way to spend a Friday night (Saturday afternoon in Aus).

It was truly and international event, today, on HarpGamer's ANW server. XXup/Adrian dropped in from Australia, Capt. Aubrey from the USA, Freek Schepers from Holland, and myself from Canada got together for a bunch of games and had an interesting time.
We tried Dave Steinmeyer's classic Lone Wolf scenario (made with the PlayersDB) before moving on to Freek's own, "Suomenlinna" from his 21st Century Ocean Wars battleset (also made with the PlayersDB). We even coaxed the old fox, Freek, to play XXup 1:1 as Finland in Suomenlinna.
Thanks to Dave and Freek for their scenarios and to Tony for the use of the ANW server.

Oh, well, better late than never!
Capt.Fred dropped by and could not resist the temptation to do battle. We took Dave Steinmeyer's "Incoming Mail" scenario, made with the PlayersDB, out for a spin with me commanding the NATO convoy and Fred taking the Soviets.
Fred got off to a great start when his Charlie II unleashed a salvo of SS-N-9 Siren SSMs against my ASW screen and blew Ambuscade clear out of the water. Retribution was not far at hand. She was quickly swamped by a swarm of helicopters and nailed with a Mk46 torpedo. Soviet Naval Aviation then paid a visit and claimed one merchant, but discovered the location of my convoy. At this point, we decided to break and return to it at another time. Hopefully, by then, Fred will have totally forgotten where he found my convoy.... :D
Thanks for a fine scenario, Dave, and thanks to Tony for the use of the server.

Captain Aubrey and I met in battle, yet again. :)
This time, we followed Freek Scheper's lead and tried out his Suomenlinna scenario made with the PlayersDB. Jim played the valiant Finns while I took the Soviet Red Army.
Unfortunately, due to the Missile Tracking bug, we ended up wiping out much of the Neutral shipping in the Gulf of Finland! Oh, well, I guess it is expected when you find yourself in a war zone....:D
Thanks to Freek for the scenario and HarpGamer for the server. Good game, Jim.

This time, we welcomed Brandon to the world of Harpoon3 Multi-player. We tried out Dave Steinmeyers's Power Sweep scenario made with the PlayersDB.
For his first MP encounter, Brandon played well. In the first round, he revealed himself early and paid the price. However, he learned quickly. We decided to play again and he got very close indeed by using all of his stealthy advantage and not firing until he saw the 'whites of my eyes'. :D
Thanks to Dave for the scenario and HarpGamer for the server. Good games, Brandon.

Brandon showed up for a match tonight. We decided to do a bit of ASW, Sub vs. Ship, so we selected Dave Steinmeyers's Lone Wolf scenario made with the PlayersDB.
I took NATO and tried to penetrate his ASW patrols and promptly got my head handed to me. Twice! :D
We then switched sides and I took the Russians to act as the hunter. Turned out that I was the hunted, again. The first sign of a submarine in the area was the sound of a torpedo detonating under the keel of my corvette! Then another one blew up, only to be followed by the destruction of a frigate. Brandon was quickly devouring my entire flotilla.
Thankfully, a Mi-14 Haze arrived on the scene and quickly dipped her sonar right atop his sub. A torpedo soon followed. Even though the torpedo killed his sub, his last volley of torpedoes managed to claim one more victim.
Thanks for a great game, Brandon. Fantastic scenario, Dave, and thanks to HarpGamer for the server.

Hey guys,
First I'll introduce myself, I am Brandon. The nickname Briec comes from the world of RPG's I wont go into detail now, but that is all that is needed for now.
Second I will make comment on Herman's MP games from the two nights, it has been a great learning experience. The first night I played Power Sweep, I will thank Dave Steinmeyer for the scenario. I learned how submarines fight and shooting torpedo's on Line of Bearing (I think that is the term) is bad for ones health. The second round was much better, as I was able to claim my first victim with a pair of spearfish, I was pretty excited. That came to a quick end as I detected some torpedo's that ended that party. Herman must have some kind of luck, I managed to sneak my diesel next to his hull and shoot I think 6 torpedo's at him, dodged them all. Russians have good countermeasures!!! He used that opportunity to sneak his diesel from the south and bring a volley from the south and the north-east. Checkmate. What did I learn? Get shots off before they take you down!
The next day was exactly how herman put it, I couldn't reload as fast as I was putting the ADCAPS in the water. Another great scenario Dave.
Tony, thanks for use of your server, wouldn't have had a chance to had to experience this aspect of H3 otherwise. Greatly appreciated.
Hope to see you guys around more.

Another excellent match with Brandon.
We tried Freek Scheper's "Suomenlinna" made with the PlayersDB and set the Gulf of Finland afire! MiGs and Sukhois as far as the eye could see. Clouds of Mi-8 helos carrying paratroops, too. Through great sacrifice to themselves, my brave Finns prevailed! There would be no repeat of their ignominious surrender of years past.
Every man did his duty and threw himself valiantly at the Russian invader. All of my strike planes and helos were wiped out, but only after inflicting serious damage on the Russkies. In the end, the Finns were the last men standing on the battlefield.
Thanks for a great game.

I had a great time with this scenario, a bit challenging for me as I hit the air. I found some humor here and a bit of frustration. Herman laid waste to me this time around as the simple equation Sukhois + Migs < Hornet or at least in my hands anyway. I came to the conclusion that the Alamo missile has a defunct guidance system. My reason behind this is two fold A) 40 alamo missiles and 2 hornet casualties LOL. and probably the biggest reason B) The phone rang and I was distracted talking to my brother, while I was busy stalking what I thought to be a hornet, I got close enough that I identified the target and it turned red. I fired an Alamo. I click to check out the nice Hornet ID tag, only in horror to find out it was an Airliner!!!! So here is what I gather happened on the airliner from the cockpit.....
Co-Pilot: *sees something in the distance and grabs some binoculars* "OH MY GOD THERE IS A MISSILE HEADED OUR WAY."
Pilot: *takes the binoculars and studies the object for a minute* "Oh, that is a Russian Alamo. Just Fly Straight." :smoke:
From the Fulcrum's Radar: Airliner - Speed: 400 Knots Heading: 209 Altitude: High
It couldn't even hit an Airliner, No countermeasures, No maneuvering, No high speed. Just straight flying!!!!
LoL, well anyway. Freek awesome scenario. Somebody mentioned something about it being your birthday, Happy B-day.
Haha, great review of your game. Sounds like me and Sparrows, may as well throw rocks at the enemy!

There were times your AMy's were having issues too; say against an unarmed MIG-25 hehehe. (Albeit the one of like three planes I had successfully dodge a good portion of missile barrages) Now if I can get Heli's to dodge AMy's
I enjoyed the match, and in reply to Tony, I think the russian's stole some sparrow technology and stuck it in the alamo, Yes/No?

Welcome to the world of Harpoon3 ANW, KlubMarcus! :D
Mark has only been playing a few weeks, but he acquitted himself most professionally. We played the entire afternoon. We started off with the classic PlayersDB scenarios by Dave Steinmeyer, "Power Sweep" and "Lone Wolf". I could tell that Mark was one cool customer when I fired a volley of torpedoes at him and he just sat there! Nerves of steel, I tell ya'
We even tried out one of Freek Scheper's PlayersDB scenarios, too. Although Nordkapp has not yet been rated for ANW solitaire play, we ran it head-to-head and found it to be excellently challenging.
Many thanks for a fun afternoon, KlubMarkus, and thanks also to David and Freek for their scenarios, as well as HarpGamer for the use of their server. :smoke:

Welcome to the world of ANW MP, Liuzg150181 :)
Liu came in for his baptism of fire, tonight. Instead of being just a spectator, this time, he dove in head first with Dave Steinmeyer's Power Sweep scenario, made with the PlayersDB. We had an excellent time and re-played it 3 more sessions. Liu learned that the first order of ASW warfare is, "Be QUIET!" After revealing his SSN Spartan to me on the first two occasions and earning himself a barrage of SS-N-15 Starfish for his troubles, he became quite crafty. :smoke:
He tried a new tactic whereby he had one submarine run at high speed in order to try and lure me into revealing myself. Against a computer opponent, it might have succeed. Full points for creativity. In our final game, we managed to destroy each other's nuclear subs and it came down to Diesel vs. Diesel; talk about a knife fight in a phone booth... :surprise:
Great games, Liu. Hope that we have many more to follow. Thanks to Dave for the scenario and HarpGamer for their server, too.

KlubMarcus came looking for a re-match, tonight! :D
We decided upon Freek Scheper's latest Battleset, 2nd Lebanese War, made with the PlayersDB. We selected Katyusha with Marko as the Israelis and myself as the Iranians.
Marko's objectives were to bomb the missile manufacturing plants in Iran. Unfortunately, he had to get past a who mob of unruly neighbours; Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Right from the beginning, he got heavily involved with the Syrians.
After fighting past them, he was on the Iranian doorstep and, like an unwelcome visitor, barging his way inside. He could do no wrong and I could do no right as he quickly shot my defenders to pieces. And then the hand of God intervened in the form of a Server crash that wiped out the last four hours of play (saved games, too) and we had to start over!
Being the gluttons for punishment that we are, we started anew. This time, I was the one with the golden touch and ripped apart every strike element as it crossed the border. However, one strike group was able to elude my interceptors and made it all the way to Tehran to damage one factory before finally being shot down. After nine hours of play, Marko finally conceded. :smoke:
This was one helluva tough game. Anyone looking for a challenging scenario that doesn't have all the targets pre-designated with "X" or pushovers for defences are commended to try this one whether it be MP or solitaire play.
This was a truly epic game, KlubMarkus, and thanks to Freek for the scenario, and HarpGamer for the use of their server.

HarpoonD and I have been trying to get together for a game over the past few weeks, but we kept missing one another. We finally showed up at the same time and place for a battle. Welcome to the world of Harpoon3 MP, HarpoonD! :D
Since HarpoonD only had a short time to play, we played the classic PlayersDB scenario by Dave Steinmeyer, "Power Sweep". HarpoonD's experience and confidence showed as we played the game at very high rates of time compression.
We only needed twenty minutes to finish the game twice. Although I won as the Russian side in both matches, it was not without cost. Even in their death throes, HarpoonD's submarines managed to take their assailants with them. :smoke:
Good games, HarpoonD and, hopefully, many more to come. Thanks to HarpGamer for their server and Dave for his scenario.

HarpoonD came in for a game tonight so we thought we'd try a scen we're just in the final stages of testing for release.
We selected Matrix Lance made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. Diesel subs hunting each other in the Baltic Sea.
We both tried to play it cool and simply lurk and search for each other with passive sonar. As is probably the real life case with diesel submarines, we didn't detect one another until well within knife-fighting range!
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18419&stc=1&d=1165899776
After a quick exchange of torpedoes, we sank each other and became, as Harp D described, "Svedish Meatballs". Awesome game, HarpD. Thanks for helping us out with this new scen.
This scenario has not yet been published, but anyone wishing to try it out can do so from HarpGamer's ANW server.
Thanks for the game and server, everyone.

Tony just upgraded the HarpGamer ANW server to use the Beta 3.7.3 patch so we decided to give it a try.
We wanted something fairly quick so we selected Matrix Lance made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. It has diesel subs on the prowl in the Baltic Sea.
We both started off with a passive sonar search pattern. However, I got impatient as my dinner was getting cold so I switched over to active sonar; a very, Very, VERY bad idea. :surprise:
Soon enough, my sonar operators reported, "Transient, Transient! Multiple torpedoes in the water!"
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18445&stc=1&d=1166499751
I quickly fired a brace of torpedoes down the line of bearing and went to flank speed in preparation for evasive manoeuvres. Unfortunately, flank speed on a diesel boat is only about 19kts and the torpedoes were running at 40kts. My decoys managed to draw one off, but the other three struck my little boat. My return fire failed to lock onto Tony's boat while one started chasing a merchantman. (Some sailors were going to get a very rude awakening!)
Another great game, Tony. Thanks for the switching up the server software to Beta Patch 3.7.3. I guess that this means that anyone wanting to try ANW on your server is going to need to install the Beta patch.
I would recommend that anyone considering installation of the Beta software to do so with a parallel installation. i.e. one version for ANW 3.7.0 and one with the Beta Patch 3.7.3 Previous experience has taught everyone more than a little scepticism with this game. :cheeky:
This scenario has not yet been published, but anyone wishing to try it out can do so from HarpGamer's ANW server.
The Stratsims server (72.21.228.42 port 14343) is now running H3 3.7.3.0 (beta), you do need 3.7.3.0 to play a game there.

Tony's really getting into the spirit of ANW. He made up a little scenario for us to try with the ANW DB. It was an even match up with USN forces.
I got in an early hit when I sank his CG Leahy with undetected wave of Harpoons and TLAM. Understandably, he returned the favour minutes later. I guess that's the price you pay for not turning on your radar systems!
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18447&stc=1&d=1166592360
My CG Ticonderoga was about to fall prey to a barrage of Harpoon missiles and had already suffered a missile strike before I wised up to the situation and turned on my radar. It was just in the nick of time that she saw some followup Harpoons and shot them down with her SAM systems.
Now, we were relatively evenly matched. Tony had a SSN Sturgeon and DD Spruance against my CG Ticonderoga and SSN Los Angeles.
I closed on his Sturgeon with both the LA and the Tico only to receive a barrage of torpedoes in the face. However, he had fired them from maximum range so I turned and easily outran them. I would not make that error, twice.
Went after his Sturgeon, once again. This time, I fired a torpedo from my own sub to goad him into moving towards my CG and it worked. He moved and I dropped a pair of ASROC-torpedoes on his head.
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18448&stc=1&d=1166592381
Meanwhile, Tony was being cagy, himself. He had crept up on my own SSN and had launched his own Mk46 torpedoes at it! However, she promptly fired a pair of ADCAP Mod 5 back at him and took off in a mad dash for safety.
Both the Sturgeon and the Spruance died within minutes of each other and I suffered no further losses. A fun time was had by all.
Thanks for the new scen, Tony. The ANW server will have it available for the next few days in case anyone would like a chance to try it out.

I threatened to make a simple MP scen over the weekend, and finally got to it today. It is available on the Stratsims server (72.21.228.42 port 14343) for the next few days. There is a 2-player variant and a 3-player variant though the 3-player is the 'correct' scenario, the two player just has one side ripped out.
Each player has two ships, a sub, and a helo or two, the goal is to sink two opposing ships and one sub.
You do need 3.7.3.0 to play this one. The scenario uses ANWDB for those who are interested in such things.
Herman came out to try the two player version with me, Dale also had a quick look at it but I begged out of the second confrontation to step back and give the Player 3 side helos as I forgot that in version 1. Thanks for the games guys.
Oh, Herman trounced me thoroughly. I took out his Spruance but he got my Leahy almost immediately and later took out my Spru and Sturgeon with masterful strokes, and he didn't even have helos! I believe outside of the Leahy hit that I fired first on well localized contacts and still I bit it big time. There is one very scared whale out there too, I nearly dropped a Mk46 on it but thankfully rechecked the ID after plopping a number of sonobuoys on it.
The scenario is quite quick to play, a few three-player encounters would be great!

Tony and I were thinking, "What better way to celebrate the holiday season than with a Harpoon battle?" So, we decided to finish off a game that we had started last week.
We selected Matrix Siege made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario has not yet been published, but anyone wanting to give it a try can find it on the HarpGamer ANW Server.
The scenario pits a USN force against a polyglot assemblage of European navies in the Kattegat and Skaggerak. Tony took the USN ships while I took the European combined command.
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18470&stc=1&d=1167201428
I knew that the USN force had extensive defensive capabilities in the form of an Arleigh Burke destroyer so I tried to sneak up on him by hiding my missile and gunboats behind a few merchant vessels making their transit of the Kattegat. I had my ships plod along at 15kts in hopes of masquerading behind the civilians. This went well until his helicopters showed up.
The Super Cobra was quickly shot out of the sky, but the SeaHawk wisely remained out of range and kept reporting my position back to the ships. Arggh. How frustrating it was to watch that pesky eye-in-the-sky.
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18471&stc=1&d=1167201428
Soon enough, a wave of Harpoon SSMs materialized and it looked like the end for me. There didn't seem much that I could do except Run Like Hell! However, the lone RAM-armed ship managed to pluck each of the missiles from the sky. Whew! :D
My ships closed and returned fire as best they could. Unfortunately, the MM.38 Exocet SSMs were unable to penetrate the SAM bubble generated by the DDG and my ships were hammered by SAMs fired in the SSM role soon afterwards.
My problems were magnified exponentially when some of the Exocets decided to take on a life of their own and pursue a civilian sailboat. Even though they had been fired on a pinpointed target, they decided to attack something else. (I guess it must be one of those 'pet' bugs that I've been hearing so much about.) Well, the sailboat was sunk so I've already lost at that point.
I continued to try and close in order to get all of my SSMs off on the targets, but the SAM envelope was simply too strong for piecemeal attacks and his guns far out-ranged mine. To add insult to injury, Tony swatted any of the missile/gun boats that dared to come into visual range of him.
Although I managed to get some hits on his DDG, it was not sufficient to sink him and I conceded victory.
It was a heckuva fun game. Thanks for the match and the use of the server. Although belated, it was an excellent stocking stuffer.

Sharker2003 (a.k.a. Brandon) showed up for his first ANW match, tonight. We started off with the tried and true, Power Sweep, by Dave Steinmeyer for the PlayersDB.
Although Brandon is a Coastie by trade, he was also a pretty mean sub driver. The first indication that there were enemy subs in my vicinity was the unmistakeable sound of a torpedo tube being fired! After firing a torpedo back down the Line of Bearing to the Tp 61 torpedo, my Victor II sub fled in the opposite direction. Soon enough, a second sub was heard to be launching. This time, it was a Spearfish. With a top speed of over 60kts, that was a truly fearsome weapon.
However, Brandon also revealed the general location of his previously hidden sub from the launch transient. My Tango-class diesel sub was close enough to hear it, too. She decided to drop an SS-N-15 Starfish into the general area to spook the sub into running and it worked. Once the location was localized, a second SS-N-15 was dropped right on top. :bite:
Both sides scored. I lost the Victor II, but was rewarded by explosions from the SSN Spartan and SSK Kobben. Tonight, victory would be mine.
Thanks for a fun game and I'm looking forward to many more future matches. It was certainly interesting to see how quickly the hunters can become the hunted. And thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server.

Brandon came ashore from his little cruise in the Gulf and immediately came onto HarpGamer to look for a game of ANW. Can you believe this guy? He didn't even call his girlfriend before setting up a game with us. Now, THERE is a guy who has his priorities straight!
We selected Matrix Siege made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario has not yet been published, but anyone wanting to give it a try can find it on the HarpGamer ANW Server.
The scenario is a European training exercise matching a USN force against a combination of European naval forces in the Kattegat and Skaggerak. I took the European command.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18783&stc=1&d=1170742940
I knew that the USN force had an Arleigh Burke destroyer so it was going to be a tough nut to crack. I tried to try and mask my ships by running behind a few merchant vessels travelling through the Kattegat. I had my ships match their speed of 15kts. This was successful until his helicopters showed up and surprised my northern flotilla.
Both of them were quickly shot out of the air with a combination of Stingers and AAA, but The Jig Was Up!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18784&stc=1&d=1170742940
Soon enough, a wave of Harpoon SSMs was detected. Forunately for me, most of them locked onto a nearby freighter, Laekonda, and pummelled her mercilessly. However, two of my missile boats must have also been in the cone of detection for they each sucked a Harpoon down the windpipe. I decided to volley-fire my own SSMs down the bearing of the incoming missiles in hopes of distracting the hidden enemy. I figured it was a matter of, "Use'm or Lose'm".
We had to call it a night at this point, but we certainly look forward to completing this game. Thanks for the game and the use of the HG ANW server. :smoke:

Brandon and I met up for another match, tonight. We decided to try Matrix Shield made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario has not yet been published, but anyone wanting to give it a try can find it on the HarpGamer ANW Server.
The scenario is a training exercise between a CIS submarine against combined Swedish / Polish Baltic ASW groups. Brandon elected to play the Hunters while played the role of the Hunted. But, as is often the case, the tables can quickly be turned around.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18796&stc=1&d=1170834339
My Kilo-Class sub was just creeping around, patiently awaiting targets to appear. Soon enough, a pair of Hugin missile boats was detected to the NE and she crept off to intercept. Not long afterwards, a Goteborg corvette was detected nearby the Hugin and they were heading right for the Kilo. Minutes later, they were both in torpedo range and a pair of TEST-71 torpedoes was fired at the Goteborg and a single torpedo at the Hugin. As the torpedo room crew hurriedly re-loaded, the attack centre counted down the seconds. Less than 1nm from the target, the torpedoes must have been detected for the Hugin abruptly turned about-face and raced off at 36kts! The torpedo was only capable of 40kts so the prey would escape, this time. However, the Goteborg was not so fortunate and she was caught in a tremendous explosion. I didn't know if the enemy had pinpointed me, but he had to know that their target was in the general vicinity.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18797&stc=1&d=1170834339
The surviving Hugin was not finished and she tried to locate me. I had the answer to that pest in the form of a 53-65 Wake-Homing torpedo. These babies were capable of running 70kts and she would not escape, again. Or so I thought. Once again, she came forward seemingly oblivious to her fate. A single 53-65 torpedo was launched after her and the crew anxiously awaited the explosion. Once again, she turned to run. However, the torpedo elected to chase a target on the opposite side of the map! (Oh, great. Looks like the targeting bug is back.) There went half my torpedo inventory rendered useless.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18798&stc=1&d=1170834339
The surviving ASW forces started to swarm into the area. They knew that a diesel boat couldn't run very fast. However, this diesel boat still had some teeth. Although she was seemingly surrounded by hostiles, she gave a good account of herself with her remaining TEST-71 wire-guided torpedoes and sank another Goteborg and 3 Hugin boats before the Polish corvette, Kaszub raced in to deliver a SET-65 torpedo that killed her. It looks like both sides had their technical problems. The 53-65 torpedoes did not work for me, but neither did the ELMA ASW rockets work for the Hunters! In the end, the sub was sunk before it could bag its goal of 6 ships. Another excellent game even if it was a bit frustrating to see that some bugs just won't die.

After a two week hiatus, John, Brandon and I were finally able to get together to finish this most enjoyable scenario. The situation, when we broke for an intermission, was that the Batroun had just outrun a torpedo fired from an Israeli submarine…
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18815&stc=1&d=1170987815
The only hope of victory lay with a speedy arrival in Lebanon. All my surviving blockade runners engaged their engines and went to full speed. Unfortunately, the fastest ship cannot outrun the slowest helicopter and, soon, another snooper was bearing down on my ships. However, this helo was in for a surprise because the blockade runner was under escort from a Syrian gunboat. The unwary Israeli pilots got a rude surprise in the form of an SA-7 Grail SAM! Even so, they managed to dodge the first one and only succumbed to the second. A tremendous cheer rose from the crew; the Israeli air force was not invincible, after all.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18816&stc=1&d=1170987220
Not long afterwards, a second helo came looking. The missileer was a young man of only 19 years and he was still elated from the exhilaration of his first kill. He immediately set about to engage this second target. The captain of the vessel burst forth from the bridge just as the SA-7 left the launcher. “Stop!” he screamed. “That’s a UN helicopter!” but he was too late. The SA-7 ran unerringly into the exhaust of the Lynx. “Abdul, you’ve killed us all,” bellowed the Captain. Sure enough, an incoming Exocet missile soon put a quick end to the glorious missile career of Abdul as it exploded directly underneath his feet.
The two surviving Hezbollah smugglers were within sight of Lebanon, 15nm away, but that was as close as they would come. A second Israeli helo swooped down on the little cigarette boat and blew her out of the water with a stream of rockets while a second UN Exocet claimed the other blockade runner. So close, yet so far. The three soldier-hostages would have to be removed from Lebanon another way.
Thanks for a great Part II to my opponents, John and Brandon, and to Tony for the use of his ANW server at HarpGamer.com. Blockade is made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. Ralf Koelbach's been waiting 15 years for a head-to-head match in Harpoon and he got his wish tonight. He came onto the HarpGamer ANW Server and we found a quick game to try. We chose Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This Classic scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian.
http://www.xtreme-gamer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18909&stc=1&d=1172097800
I took the NATO side and quickly picked up reactor noises from a Victor II-class sub. Boy, she was a noisy boat. The Spartan crept up on her and surprised her with a quick torpedo shot. I don't think she ever counter-detected my sub before she was on her way to the bottom.
A second nuclear sub was detected, a Charlie II-class SSGN. Although technically inferior to the Victor II boat, the Charlie managed to counter-fire a salvo of torpedoes when she heard SSN Spartan fire her torpedo. Both volleys claimed victims. Now, only the diesel boats remained to do battle.
However, I had the advantage as SSK Kobben had a track on the Tango and he never even knew that I was in the area. One final barrage of NT-37 torpedoes and I was awarded victory.
Thanks for a really fun game and welcome to the world of Harpoon MP play. Thanks also to HarpGamer for the use of their server and to Dave for the scenario. With out the server, we would not have been able to play since Ralf is limited by a 64k ISDN connection.

Ethan Atsinger has been playing and testing Harpoon since the first round of H3 came out. I finally got to meet up with him for a match of ANW tonight. Although Ethan had not played against a human opponent in nearly two years, he had not lost his edge. Ethan said that he could only play for a short time since he needed to spend some quality time with the spouse so we agreed to play a scenario that normally runs 20 minutes. As with most activities involving Harpoon, we got so engrossed that we eventually played 3 different scenarios for over four hours!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18921&stc=1&d=1172291443
We started with Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This Classic scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian. I took the Russians and Ethan played NATO. Ethan said that his nickname was Mr. Thermocline and it became apparent soon after we started. His handling of SSN Spartan was certainly troublesome to my forces and only the desperate application of a nuclear-tipped SS-N-16 Stallion put an end to this thorn in my side. His surviving SSK Kobben struggled bravely, but was soon overcome by my force of three submarines.

http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18923&stc=1&d=1172291507
We quickly switched sides and decided to play again. This time, Ethan and I fought to a draw. He wiped me out, but had insufficient forces survive to meet his Victory Conditions.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18924&stc=1&d=1172291517
Our last match of the night was Matrix Siege also made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario depicts a European training exercise matching a USN force against a combined European naval force in the Kattegat and Skaggerak. I took the European command.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18925&stc=1&d=1172291532
Ethan was very cagy and hid close to shore hoping that I would pass by him. I did manage to finally locate him hugging the Danish shore and launched a furious attack by Exocets from all angles and ranges. The power of his single AEgis destroyer was sufficient to brush off all SSM attacks from the entire combined command (that and the Targeting bug that had my SSMs turn around and fly back in my direction!) However, he played ‘hard to get’ for a bit too long and didn’t have time to get on station to fulfill his Victory Conditions. I wasn’t able to fulfill mine, either. However, I’ll “claim” victory since Ethan accidently blew up a neutral merchantman in the Kattegat. :D
A fine evening of Harpoon entertainment was enjoyed thanks to the scenario authors, the players, and the ANW server hosted by HarpGamer.

Rodrigo Flores showed up on the HarpGamer ANW server looking for his baptism of fire in Harpoon multi-player. He's the first Brazilian I've met as an opponent.
We chose to start with the Classic Power Sweep scenario written by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18933&stc=1&d=1172423180
I took the Russians and Rodrigo played NATO. Rod acquitted himself well in his first MP experience. Our subs exchanged volleys of torpedoes, but luck was on my side as the decoys managed to distract his Spearfish. Victory was mine.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18934&stc=1&d=1172423190
We quickly decided to switch sides and play again. This time, armed with nuclear weapons, Rod managed to exact a price. I got off to a good early start and sent his Victor II to the bottom without being counter-detected. However, while hunting for his Charlie II SSGN, he must have caught a sniff of the SSN Spartan. The next thing I knew, the sky was falling from the detonation of a NUKE!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18935&stc=1&d=1172423197
Undaunted, the surviving SS Kobben was facing 2:1 odds, yet she crept up on the SSGN and killed her with Tp61 torpedoes before continuing on to ambush the Tango and victory was mine, again.
A really fun time was had and a warm welcome to a new ANW. Thanks to Dave for the scenario and to HarpGamer for the ANW server.

Ralf Koelbach came back for hungry for revenge and showed why he is still a master of the game after fifteen years. Since I won our first encounter, Ralf challenged me to a re-match with the same scenario, Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18937&stc=1&d=1172443538
I took the NATO side and quickly picked up reactor noises from a Victor II-class sub. However, Ralf was playing it very coyly, this time. Knowing that he had revealed himself early on during our last engagement, he was creeping around at only 2 kts and barely making steerage. "It won't matter", I thought, as SSN Spartan crept up on him. At a range of 9nm, the torpedomen of the SSN Spartan were 'shining the cannonball' and just waiting for the order to fire.
All of a sudden, the sonar watch cried out, "Transient!..." and that was the last thing they ever said as a nuclear fireball was re-created right over the Spartan. Damn, and she didn't even get a chance to fire before going down!
That left me with SS Kobben against three Russian boats; two of them nuclear. I didn't like those odds at all, but what's a commander to do.
Kobben tried to creep up on the Victor, but suffered the same fate as her mission mate -- nuclear fireball -- and I lost the scenario resoundingly.
Thanks for another superbly challenging game. Thanks also to the HarpGamer for the use of their server and to Dave for the scenario.
Ralf's already preparing the next generation of Harpoon player; he taught his 12-yr old son how to play.

Freek Schepers doesn’t play a lot of Multi-player games, but when he does, he always delivers a great challenge. Today, we met up on the HarpGamer ANW server and decided to play, “Plug the Gap”, made for the PlayersDB.
The scenario matches a NATO force of diesel submarines against a lightly defended convoy in transit. Although the Russian escorts are fairly numerous, their sonar is nearly useless. I played the Russians while Freek commanded the submarines.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18979&stc=1&d=1173220084
As the escort commander, I tried to have my nearly deaf ships fairly far ahead of my transports. It wasn’t a pleasant thought, but the only indication I would have of a submarine in the area would likely be the “Screeeeee….” sound of torpedoes in the water. With 6 corvettes, I certainly hoped that I had sufficient escorts to survive the first salvo.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18980&stc=1&d=1173220084
“Luck” would be on my side. As the little corvettes pinged away with their puny sonar systems, it was a radar operator that rang the alarm bell. “Periscope detected bearing 053 degrees!” Unfortunately, the nearest corvettes were well out of range for their SET-72 torpedoes. It didn’t matter as the sonar room immediately reported torpedoes in the water. The nearest corvette responded by launching her own salvo of SET-72 on Bearing-Only-Launch mode. She could only hope that they would be smart enough to find the submarine on their own as she turn around and ran from the oncoming torpedoes at full throttle.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18981&stc=1&d=1173220084
As one corvette was running from the torpedoes, more torpedoes suddenly appeared in front of her! Somehow, a diesel submarine had crept in behind them. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place! She launched a brace of her own torpedoes while being chased by four weapons. With so many torpedoes in the water, the outcome was pretty much inevitable. I lost 4 escorts within minutes, but my own torpedoes managed to claim both subs. The action was so hectic, that one errant torpedo actually ran right between my two transports. There were a lot of breaths being held as it passed between them.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18982&stc=1&d=1173220084
Now, with only one surviving escort and the two transports, I made a run for the open sea. Unfortunately, the enemy commander seemed to read my mind as he raced with his sub to intercept. Once more, we exchanged torpedoes. The Tp62 ran straight and true. At first, I did not order my transports to turn away as I did not think that the torpedoes would be able to detect them. This turned out to be my undoing as they went into search mode and found my freighters. Now, when I turned away, it was too late. One vessel was able to escape, but the other one was caught by the Tp62 after a long chase. I was able to evade further attacks, but the loss of one freighter prevented me from achieving my victory conditions and the game was a draw.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18983&stc=1&d=1173220084

Yesterday I played Herman MP using RC8
The Scenario was Plug The Gap (not released yet I think).
I started with three D/E Nordic subs and I was tasked to prevent some escorted merchants carrying WOMD from passing the Kattegat. Not much info I thought.
I started bringing two of my subs on E/W line to cover the gap, and moving the third South to give me early Intel. Detected small corvette type Russian warships in two groups but without merchants. My main challenge would be to to find and ID hostile merchants from the neutral ones. I would need to make persicope sweeps, and while the corvettes had poor sonar, they have OK radar!
I intercepted a few merchants coming ahead of the escorts just to calibrate my scope and found I needed to be within 2nm to classify them as neutral. That meant I'd have to ID the hostiles based on behaviour.
The corvette groups were approaching the exit to the Kattegat and my two Northern subs (having passed the third one) and I started seeing them move N/W to open sea at 20knots. Sonar also detected two merchants moving at 15 to 20 knots behind the corvettes. As neutrals generally don't move at more than cruise speed I decided these were my targets and ordered my forward sub to chase after them at 17 knots. A difficult intercept.
At this point the corvette contacts were jumping all around my Swedish sub, and I decided to stick up the periscope. Even before the ESM reported enemy radar emissions, Herman shouted 'Found you' on gertrude! I fired a spread of FFV wire guided torps in reply, turned north and raced away with torpedo's following in my wake. Three corvettes raced south, one straight to my Danish sub trying to intercept the targets. The Danish captain fired a further 2 Mk37s to that target. Heard 'Damn' on gertrude (one of the best sounds I believe). Hermans corvette turned east and fired BOL torps. I fired another FFV torp from the North at slow speed just in case one of the corvettes would avade my torpedo's and turn back.
Within minutes 3 corvettes sunk, unfortunately so did my Danish sub of which the 17 knot top speed was not enough.
I now realised that in spite of this carnage, what I thought were the two primary targets might escape West out of the Kattegat so the Swedish sub turned and moved in at 17 knots to intercept. It had to pass very close to 3 remaining corvettes and when sonar detected excited shouts from the targets I fired another group of torps at this group. Also fired my last two Bearing-only at the two merchants. I scored one hit on a corvette but obviously I had a torp in my baffles as suddenly I lost the second sub.
My third sub was on the East side of the Kattegat and had just ID'd another merchant as neutral. It went to flank speed to try to head off the merchants which were running full speed South with two FFV torps in persuit. I could not see the results of the torps but could see one enemy bearing turning back North and one remaining steady.
As I could not intercept the escaping merchie in time I fired 3 torps at her hoping to force her to flee south again. This ploy failed as the torps only had 35 knot speed and not enough range.
Game ended in a draw and I found I had killed one of the primary targets and 5 corvettes but lost two.
A great game and RC8 behaved well. Only issue was that anytime I went to persicope depth; when I resubmerged the speed would go to zero and I'd have to reorder speed/heading a few times.

Rodrigo Flores was just finishing up a hard week's work when we linked up and decided on a game of ANW. We decided to try one of the latest scenario releases for the PlayersDB, "Alone in the Snow". The scenario depicts a Russian attack on "neutral" Sweden. Rodrigo played the Russians while I played the Swedes.
As the designer of this scenario, I had a slight advantage since I had an idea of the overall Order of Battle. Luckily, Rod chose the side that I would have deemed more powerful and thus evened out the match.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/489/alone1zg2.th.gif (http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alone1zg2.gif)
I had three operational airbases and numerous targets to protect. As is usual on the defensive, I had insufficient assets to cover them all. I decided to focus on Visby Island as it was the most likely target. Sure enough, enemy planes began their approach. I intercepted the first flight of four (Floggers?) with four Viggen at low level. They stayed at low altitude before climbing to the attack just as they came into range. It was the case of the classic ambush and all four bogies were splashed with no Swedish losses and Alpha flight congratulated themselves as they sped back to Visby to re-arm.
As is often the case in war, the hunters can quickly become the hunted. Beta flight came in to relieve the departing Viggen and got a wholly unpleasant reception. This time, all four were shot out of the air well beyond the range of their own SkyFlash missiles. They were quickly avenged by Delta flight, but it did not assuage the feeling of sadness from the loss of their comrades. Delta flight also lost two planes in the melee. The score was now 6:6. Unfortunately, I knew that the Russians had a LOT more planes in the barn.
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/4768/alone2zc3.th.gif (http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alone2zc3.gif)
As the bulk of my air patrols congregated around Visby Island, Karlskrona suddenly reported an inbound air raid! No interceptors were within range, so all I could do was grit my teeth and bear it. The air base was hammered violently. On their egress, a flight of 6 Viggen managed to catch the mixed group of Fulcrum and Fitters from Peenemunde and decimated them. The two survivors were able to exact a token of revenge, too. One Viggen caught an Aphid missile in the port side just as she was turning to flee after expending her missiles.
A lull ensued as both sides re-armed and re-fueled. I ordered my air patrols to stay at low altitude. Ground intercept radar could clearly see an A-50 Mainstay loitering over Kaliningrad and I didn't want to present any targets for the swarms of Flankers and Fulcrum circling over the Baltic unless I had to do so. Soon enough, I was forced to reveal my patrols as teams of Flankers and Fulcrum started edging nearer.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/1682/alone3iy3.th.gif (http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alone3iy3.gif)
Several were ambushed without loss. As the interceptors raced back to base for re-armament and re-fueling, a veritable swarm of helicopters was spotted hugging the deck and approaching Visby. After dining on Fulcrum and Flanker as the main course, the pilots were ecstatic in their discovery of "dessert" and tore into the helpless transports with RB-74 Sidewinders and aerial gunnery passes. Nearby patrols of Flankers tried in vain to protect the helos, but they were just too far away. The entire assault force was cut to ribbons.
At this point, Rodrigo suggested that he was no longer able to achieve his victory conditions as he had no more ground attack assets. While this might have been reasonable if he was playing a computer opponent, the fact that he was playing a human allowed him to continue. A military maxim states that, "When you are no longer able to achieve victory, the definition of victory changes to the prevention of your enemy from achieving victory." Rod certainly had more than enough assets remaining to make my life miserable.
At this point, we decided to save the game in hopes of finishing it this weekend. Thanks to Rodrigo for a fun match to this point and to HarpGamer for the use of their server.

Rodrigo and I managed to get in another round of combat over the Baltic. After suffering a few crashes while starting up the game, we finally managed to pick up where we left off.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19081&stc=1&d=1174506102
I was settling into a nice pace of defense over Visby. I thought that I had the situation well in hand. However, Rod had different ideas. I was able to shoot down the occasional interloper, but Rod discovered that he had an asset of which he was previously unaware - an A-50 Mainstay. Due to communications problems, the Russian AWACS crew had been unable to control the situation. Now that the problem was rectified, Rod started getting proper intercept vectors and there appeared to be no place that I could hide!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19082&stc=1&d=1174506102
Soon enough, Rod sent his Fulcrums and Flankers over into Swedish air space, once again. The significant difference being their Eye in the Sky was coaching them. I could no longer spring aerial ambushes from low level any longer and Rod got maximum use from his long-ranged Alamo weapons. My Gripen fighter-bombers tried in vain to close the distance to fire their own Sidewinders, but most were shot down before their release. The exchange ratio was dreadful as I began to lose 2 or more fighters for every Russian destroyed. And the swarms seemed endless.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19083&stc=1&d=1174506102
Wave, after wave, of Russian planes broke against the Visby Island defenders and each wave eroded the defences just a little more. The aerial losses were sickening enough, but the expenditure of weapons was extreme. I finally had to abandon Visby air base not due to damage, but due to the fact that all the weapons stored in her ammunition dump had been consumed. His Majesty's air force fell back upon the stores at Bravalla and quickly expended them, too. Only one base remained with any weapons, Soderhamn. I didn't know if I would run out of planes or missiles, first, and the Russian planes seemed endless in their procession.
At this point, we called for a second intermission. Maybe I should have taken the victory when it was first offered...

Welcome to the world of Harpoon3 ANW, DiveFreak! :D
Rene's been an avid player of the Harpoon Classic version, but he decided to take a walk on the "dark side" with Harpoon ANW. As a primer, we elected to try the classic PlayersDB scenarios by Dave Steinmeyer, "Power Sweep".
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19111&stc=1&d=1174808764
It was a very short match as Rene was quite unfamiliar with the Harpoon3 interface. However, we certainly hope to have many more battles in the future. Many thanks Rene for the match and to HarpGamer for hosting the server. :smoke:

Rodrigo and I met up to see if we could finish this exciting PlayersDB scenario, "Alone in the Snow". Choowee decided to drop in and watch us fight it out. During our last session, Rod had beaten me back from Visby Island. It was not such a great loss as all the available ammo had already been depleted.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19116&stc=1&d=1174905556
As His Majesty's forces re-grouped around Bravalla, an uneasy standoff ensued. The Russian Floggers lacked sufficient range to effectively challenge me for aerial superiority over Bravalla and I had no planes armed with long-ranged missiles to challenge him over Visby Island. The odd Fulcrum ventured too far over the Swedish mainland and got jumped by flights of Gripen, but both sides were, apparently, catching their breath.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19117&stc=1&d=1174905556
However, Rodrigo turned out to be a cunning tactician. As he maintained his combat air patrols over Visby, several flights of helicopters were flown in behind his screens. As Sweden didn't have an airborne radar system, they were not detected until the last possible moment. Once detected, I was forced to throw all my available combat air patrols into the fray and try to intercept. The Helix B could do considerable damage if left unmolested.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19118&stc=1&d=1174905556
Unfortunately, Rod had laid out his plan quite masterfully. By sacrificing a pair of Floggers as the first screen, he depleted the SkyFlash loadouts on my Viggen. When they finally broke through the screen, they only had short-ranged Sidewinders left to face the Flankers and Fulcrum. Two Viggen were lost to long-ranged Alamo missiles with nothing in return. It was a masterful defensive setup.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19119&stc=1&d=1174905556
I really had no choice but to commit to an uneven battle. While facing incoming Alamo missiles, my Viggen exchanged SkyFlash with the Russians. Again, two Viggen were lost for no commensurate return. While they were engaged with the screens, they could not intercept the defenceless helicopters. Finally, after dreadful losses, one flight fought their way through to engage the ground assault elements. Sadly, they were only able to shoot down one helo and a defending fighter before they, themselves, were brought down by super lethal AA-11 Archer.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19120&stc=1&d=1174905556
After shooting down the remaining Helix B attack force at tremendous cost to themselves, the men of the Swedish air arm simply had no more to give. The Russian planes swarmed over the Baltic like a swarm of angry Yellow-Jacket hornets just outside of a screen door. Out of planes, ammo, and luck, the Swedes retired northward as the game ended in a draw. The severe mauling of the Swedish forces prevented Swedish victory and the lack of surviving ground attack assets prevented the Russians from sufficiently reducing Visby air base. A tremendous game was played by Rodrigo. Thanks for the match and thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server.

Rodrigo and I had another electronic showdown on the electronic seas, this weekend. This time, we clashed in the Norwegian Sea while playing "Nordkapp" by Freek Schepers. This scenario was written for the PlayersDB. Rod played as the Russians hunting for a small amphibious group and I took the Dutch side.
I was ordered to evacuate a small task group centred on the LPD Rotterdam after she had finished disembarking her Marines in Northern Norway. She was under escort by the FFGs Zeven de Provincien, de With, and PTM Orn.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19135&stc=1&d=1175391191
The first sign sign of the enemy was in the form of a helicopter's radar signature. Since I knew that these short-ranged aircraft had to operate from ships, I knew that there had to be a surface combatant hunting us. Fortunately, Rod underestimated the power and range of the Standard missiles carried aboard the Zeven. All it took was one to blind mine enemy's eyes. :p
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19136&stc=1&d=1175391191
Stinging from the lost of his first helo, others followed more cautiously. Both sides launched their SSM attacks piecemeal and they were summarily brushed off by the powerful SAM defences from both sides. PTM Orn managed to close with the enemy and deliver her Penguin SSMs, but she was detected and summarily executed while making her dash for safety. The lousy missile performance by both sides resulted in each player violating his Rules of Engagement and we each killed a neutral vessel.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19137&stc=1&d=1175391191
However, my orders were not to destroy the enemy. Instead, I was to screen Rotterdam as she made her escape southwards. In this, I was successful and was awarded victory as Rotterdam managed to "slip out the back door" whilst everyone else was engaged.
Thanks to Freek for another fun PlayersDB scenario, Rod for being a willing and patient opponent, and HarpGamer for hosting the server.

MP has been somewhat quiet, but the community welcomed another member last night. JaTB (a.k.a. Norbert) came onto the Server looking for an opponent. Even though he bought the game last year, he hasn't had time to play it until now.
We started off with Dawn Patrol re-made for the PlayersDB. His baptism of fire as the Russians was short and brutal. JaTB revealed his position by radiating his radar and was rewarded by a salvo of Penguin SSMs. We switched sides and tried again. This time, he learned very quickly and we totally sank each other's forces.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19265&stc=1&d=1178617157
We then moved on to Power Sweep, by Dave Steinmeyer. Norbert is quite an experienced naval wargame player and has experience with Dangerous Waters, Fleet Command, and Janes and it showed. He certainly drove a mean submarine. His Victor II was pursued by 4 Spearfish torpedoes and he managed to dodge them all. Thank goodness I had a fifth one... ;)
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19266&stc=1&d=1178617157
All in all, it was a fine evening of combat on and under the seas. Thanks for some fun games, JaTB, and thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server.

JaTB (a.k.a. Norbert) is on vacation. How better to pass the time than playing Harpoon ANW head-to-head? ;)
We finished off the previously saved scenario, Power Sweep re-made with the favorite database of Harpoon ANW, the PlayersDB.
When we last signed off, I had just sunk his SSN Victor II with a volley of Spearfish torpedoes. We were matched up with SSGN Charlie and Tango vs. SSN Superb and SSK Kunna. SSN Superb moved in to collect the Charlie when all of a sudden, my world turned upside down.
Sonar reported a transient from the Charlie and soon afterwards, SSN Superb just disappeared. Damn! I've just been on the receiving end of an SS-N-15 Starfish Nuke! When dealing with nukes, close is close enough.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19268&stc=1&d=1178758090
Now, I only had SSK Kunna against two Russian subs; short odds, indeed. However, luck did smile upon me when the Tango sped up and revealed her previously hidden location. This earned her a spread of Tp61 torpedoes which caught her as she tried to evade.
Although I was still facing a nuclear-armed Charlie, I was fairly confident that he had not been able to counter-detect me so I crept in close before launching a full salvo of every remaining torpedo in my tubes. If I was going to go up in a ball of nuclear fire, I wanted to be certain to take him with me! Luckily, he was too busy trying to evade to return fire and the torpedoes caught him at maximum depth. Another great end to another great scenario.
Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and to Dave Steinmeyer for the scenario.

JaTB (a.k.a. Norbert) and I decided to try a few more scenarios made with the favorite database of Harpoon ANW, the PlayersDB.
We tried to run Flaming Datum, but ANW is just too slow on the calculations. Even though the number of units was relatively small, the size of the map was the Gulf of Alaska.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19273&stc=1&d=1178937185
Instead, we decided to play a PlayersDB classic, Nordkapp with me as NATO against the Russians. I was trying to evacuate an amphibious force from Northern Norway and he was trying to stop me.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19274&stc=1&d=1178937185
My little flotilla fled under cover of darkness and EmCon. In a brilliant coup de main, JaTB fired a volley of Sunburn SSMs which caught me flat-footed as two of them slammed into FFG de With. She barely activated her SAM systems in time to shoot down the last two missiles. With half of her flotation destroyed, she was hurting badly. Worst of all, her own Harpoon SSM launcher had been damaged so she could not reply!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19275&stc=1&d=1178937185
FFG Zeven de Provincien responded for her by slamming a Harpoon salvo into FFG Neustrashimyy to even the score. The PhibRon successfully left the area, but the ViConds would not activate (looks like yet another ANW bug :OHNO: ).
With time remaining in the afternoon, we decided on one more PlayersDB scenario, Matrix Shield. I played the SSK Kilo being hunted by Swedish ASW forces. It was a long game (as most scenarios involving diesel submarines are), but once the action began, it was quite thrilling.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19276&stc=1&d=1178937185
Norbert had the undesirable task of locating and sinking my Kilo boat. I had a strong lock on his units throughout the game and picked off each hunter one at a time. Luckily, I managed to kill his most effective ASW units, first. FF Kaszub and an FSG Goteborg were the initial victims of my Type 53-65 Wake-Homing torpedoes. Without their sensors, his remaining PTM Hugin were virtually blind. However, the ANW weapons targeting bug kept me from completing my mission and winning the game as torpedo after torpedo ended up chasing after the wrong target when I was trying to claim one more Hugin and victory.

JaTB (a.k.a. Norbert) and I met up to put the ANW Server through her paces, again. We wanted to try a few more scenarios made with the favorite database of Harpoon ANW, the PlayersDB.
We chose to run Matrix Knight. This scenario has not yet been released, but anyone wanting to try it can find it on the HarpGamer ANW Server.
Matrix Knight is an SSBN exercise played from both sides. While hunting an enemy SSBN, you must also protect your own SSBN. I commanded SSN Hartford and SSBN L'Inflexible against similar forces controlled by Norbert.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19279&stc=1&d=1179023462
Hartford cruised across her patrol zone at a leisurely 10kts hoping to pick up the trail of her quarry while my SSBN crept around her launch area at minimum steerage. Hartford caught a whiff of her prey, first. After a series of course corrections designed to maximize the effiicacy of her Target Motion Analysis, she localized the simulated Delta IV SSBN closely enough that a pair of Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes were launched. She sat back to await the explosions but was totally surprised when both of them missed! A second volley of 2 ADCAP fared better and the SSBN was caught at a depth of 400m.
The other half of the equation was the safe-keeping of the SSBN L'Inflexible. As she lurked within her launch zone, a transient was soon detected. It turned out to be an old SSN Valiant. As the Valiant appeared to be creeping in search of the SSBN, I decided to creep away in the other direction; hoping that this would preclude him from closing the distance.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19280&stc=1&d=1179023462
Not long afterwards, sonar reported another contact ahead of me. It turned out to be SSN Swiftsure. Once again, since discretion is the better part of valour, I crept off in a new direction. My launch area measured 50nm by 50nm, so there should be plenty of room to hide. Obviously, he must have caught my scent as the bloodhounds appeared to try and box me in. It was an eerie feeling knowing that my enemy probably detected me but was out of range, as yet.
I let my pursuers close in on me slightly. They had to make more noise than I did in doing so. At maximum torpedo range, I sent a volley of 2 F17 towards Swiftsure. I was hoping that they would have sufficient range, but would be happy if they forced my pursuers to keep their distance. Unfortunately, the sonar suite aboard Switftsure was very alert and detected the launch transients almost immediately. She ran at flank speed (28kts) with 40kt torpedoes in pursuit.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19281&stc=1&d=1179023462
JaTB also tried a wild new tactic that I had not seen before. He ordered his submarine to the surface in hopes of the torpedoes losing track of him in the surface clutter. I do not know if it worked, but both torpedoes missed. After the evasion, both submarine contacts returned, but at a much slower speed.
Valiant approached from the NE quadrant and got the same reception, a volley of F17 torpedoes in the face, and reacted similarly. He tried the same evasion technique of putting his boat on the surface. There might something to it since both weapons missed, also!
Now, with time running out in the exercise, I had the breathing room necessary. I only had to survive for twelve hours -- only had 30 minutes remained. Norbert's hunters did not get close enough for any further engagement before time expired.
A really fun scenario with a great opponent. Thanks to HarpGamer for the use of the server and JaTB for his cunning and wiles.

AAR: Interfet-Stabilize [Spoiler Alert]
Harpoon ANW scenario for the PlayersDB
by Freek Schepers
East Timor is an old Portuguese colony which was annexed by Indonesia in 1975. In August 1999, the citizenry overwhelmingly voted for independence, and, almost immedately afterwards, Indonesian-backed militia bacame active. By September, 250.000 people had fled the killings.
In September, President Habibi of Indonesia finally agreed to the deployment of a multinational UN-peacekeeping force in East Timor so long as it was primarily Asian troops.
While US, New Zealand, Italian, Singaporean, Malaysian, and Norwegian troops began the long preparations for deployment, Australia was ready and an amphibious convoy put to sea.
Indonesia objected strongly to this breach of the agreement.
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/5457/interfetpw1.th.gif (http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=interfetpw1.gif)
Although this scenario has not yet been released, Tony and I decided to give it a try on the HarpGamer ANW Server. Anyone else interested in this scenario can also try it out there, too. In order to preserve the element of surprise if Tony should decide to play this scenario solitaire, I commanded the Indonesians while Tony took the UN forces.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19314&stc=1&d=1179508069
My orders were to destroy several troop transports carrying soldiers for the Interfet operation as it is much easier to destroy units while they are embarked on ships than after they disembark and deploy. Several contact bearings were reported by submarine so I launched an unarmed Super Frelon helo to triangulate the contacts.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19315&stc=1&d=1179508079
Once the convoy was solidly pinpointed, the submarine was ordered to dive and creep along at maximum depth. The convoy path would take it right overhead and she did not need to make any extraneous noise. Strangely, FF Anzac seemed to accelerate and pull away from the rest of the group at 31 knots. Luckily, she was still running directly towards the SS Cakra. When she was only 2nm away, I decided to launch a spread of torpedoes. I knew that she was not my main target and that I might be revealing myself early, but I was following the adage of "the bird in hand...." In addition, she held a potential inventory of 8 Harpoon missiles that could wreak havoc among my approaching ships.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19316&stc=1&d=1179508086
The spread of four SUT torpedoes broke the surface 1 nm away from their target. An alert lookout must have noticed them as the ship began immediate evasive manoeuvres. Although the ANZAC was able to flee at 31 kts, the range was too short and the 34 kt torpedoes soon caught her and cut the SSMs available to the UN in half. Yahoo!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19318&stc=1&d=1179508104
Unfortunately, turnabout is fair play, too. Soon afterwards, a salvo of Harpoon missiles was detected from the surviving NZ frigates. After one was shot down, I went onto the chat channel to boast about my excellent gunnery. Meanwhile, a second wave of missiles demolished both of my own Harpoon-armed Ahmad Yani missile boats before they could fire their missiles. Argggh! Moral of the story was: "Don't gloat during combat." I only had two more boats armed with the shorter-ranged Exocet. One "good" outcome of the Harpoon attack on me was the fact that one of the missiles started tracking a local fishing boat and blew her out of the water. Now world opinion would turn against the UN for harming civilians.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19317&stc=1&d=1179508095
On the East coast of Timor, FF Hasnuddin detected the fast ferry, Jervis Bay rounding the point and set her ablaze with old-fashioned gunfire. Luckily, she did not try to escape with her phenomenal 42kt maximum speed as the frigate was only capable of 24kts in pursuit.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19319&stc=1&d=1179508115
Back to the Amphibious convoy, a Mandau-class missile boat silently crept up on her prey. She maintained EmCon to prevent the Kiwis from ascertaining her exact identity as she was getting navigational cues from the orbiting Super Frelon helo. A second helo armed with Exocet missiles launched to try and coordinate a pincer attack with the Mandau. Just as they arrived to simultaneously deliver Exocet from the surface and the air, fire control radar was detected from the frigate! The tattletale helo exploded in a fireball, but she had done her duty and 6 Exocets were sufficient to overwhelm the little frigate's defenses. The Mandau did not live to see the results as she fell victim to return fire.
At this point, just when I thought things were getting interesting, Tony conceded defeat. With only one frigate left to protect the convoy, he didn't think that it would be sufficient to accomplish the mission. We saved the game in case he changed his mind.
Thanks to Freek for another superb scenario and to Tony for a great game. It was too bad that I had the opportunity to help test this scenario during development, but I tried not to take advantage of my prior knowledge.

Just met up with Elrandir for a game on the HarpGamer ANW server. Welcome to the world of ANW MP. We elected to try something simple, so we chose Power Sweep, written for the PlayersDB by Dave Steinmeyer.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19571&stc=1&d=1182462856
We ran it twice with me taking the Soviets on both occasions and Elrnandir commanding the NATO subs. It was a good match up. NATO managed to track me most of the game, but the long-ranged nature of the SS-N-15 Starfish helped even the odds. Even the phenomenal performance of the Spearfish were unable to compensate. In the end, I won both sessions after a nice bit of wrangling and manoeuvring by Elrandir. Thanks for the game and thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server. :smoke:

Elrandir came back for a second round on the HarpGamer ANW server. This time, we selected Nordkapp, written for the PlayersDB by Freek Schepers. I played NATO and Elrandir played the Russians.

My mission was to shepherd LPD Rotterdam out of the war zone. I sent my ASW helos up to scout for the enemy. I managed to classify and identify a Krivak, Chabenenko, and Neustrashimyy-class warships before the Neustrashimyy shot my helo from the sky. Ouch!
However, I offered a quick riposte by sinking the Chabenenko with a fusillade of Harpoon missiles before she could unleash her Sunburn missiles in my direction. My PTM Orn then managed to sneak up on the Krivak and launch her salvo of Penguin SSMs. She inflicted mortal damage on the frigate, but one of her missiles also struck a neutral freighter. (Typical Norwegian marksmanship... ;))
Elrandir tried in vain with his survivors to prevent my egress, but failed due to the strength of the SAMs from the Zeven de Provincien. I don't know who won since I managed to achieve my Victory Conditions, but I had accidentally damaged a neutral vessel while doing so. Regardless, it was a fun game. Thanks for the battle and thanks to Freek for the scenario.

We managed to lure the old fox, James Cobb, out of his lair for his first session with Harpoon ANW. James has been playing Harpoon nearly 20 years so it was a walk down memory lane. :D
We selected Dawn Patrol, re-made for the PlayersDB. I played the Big Bad Russians and James played Norway.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19579&d=1182723427
Although James was a bit rusty with the controls, he was still pretty cagey by spreading his forces around in an attempt to localize my units. Fortunately for me, I turned on my radar at just the right time and caught all of his units exposed. Like a deer in the headlights, I obliterated his forces with SS-N-9 Siren SSMs before he could respond. A quick and brutal game.
Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and James for the match. Like riding a bicycle, he never really forgot. :smoke:

Seems like June is the month whereby we welcome back all the old-time Harpoon players to ANW. Jeremy been playing H2 and H3 for years and he is presently serving in Iraq, but managed to find time to log onto the ANW server.
We selected Dawn Patrol, re-made for the favourite database of ANW, the PlayersDB. I played the Norwegians and Jeremy played the Russians.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19585&stc=1&d=1182820554
Like a man groping around in the dark, I dispersed my units and hoped to bump into my opponent. Luckily, one PTM Hugin did just that. It ran into one of his missile boats. I was quicker on the draw and managed to riddle her with gunfire and a pair of Penguin SSMs. The luck of the Irish was with me when I flipped on the radar. A second enemy missile boat was detected within range and she promptly sucked in 3 more Penguins without any return fire. After this quick engagement, I was awarded victory.
With his appetite for destruction whetted, Jeremy wanted a second game so we chose Power Sweep, for the PlayersDB. I played the Russians while Jeremy took NATO.
Jeremy played a very stealthy game. As my submarines made their transit, my Victor II suddenly detected inbound torpedoes materializing out of nowhere. She quickly launched a volley of torpedoes on Bearing-only-Launch and turned to flee.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19586&stc=1&d=1182820554
The dictum, "A live torpedo has no friends," was proven, once again, today. The Victor's flight was successful, but the torpedo soon tracked onto the (previously hidden) SSK Tango and forced her to reveal herself in flight.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19587&stc=1&d=1182820554
As the submarines re-grouped for their journey, they were surprised yet again! Out of nowhere, a barrage of Spearfish torpedoes appeared in front of SSGN Charlie. However, her luck held as the torpedo exploded against a decoy. A return volley of SS-N-15 Starfish doomed the Spartan and victory was awarded to the Russians. :)
Still unsatisfied, Jeremy and I switched sides and re-played the scenario. This time, he dropped Nuclear charges onto SSN Spartan before she even had a chance to respond. Although it might not have been 'cricket', it certainly was effective.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19589&stc=1&d=1182820554
With only the Kobben surviving and opposed by 3 Russian subs, I did the best I could. A salvo of Tp61 torpedoes managed to catch the Victor II, but a return volley of SS-N-15 Starfish quickly sank the Kobben. Another great match.
With time remaining before breakfast in Iraq, we decided to try one more game. This time, we chose Nordkapp, for the PlayersDB, by Freek Schepers. I played the evading NATO Phibron while Jeremy played the Russian hunters.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19590&stc=1&d=1182820554
With my ASW helos performing the scouting duties, I quickly identified the DDG Chabenenko and released a salvo of 16 Harpoon SSMs against her. Amazingly, all were shot down! I was in awe. Even better was to hear Jeremy describe the 'pucker factor' as he saw the wave of SSMs approaching his destroyer. :D
Right about then, Jeremy managed to 'conveniently' arrange a crash of the server so that he could go for breakfast. ;) We certainly hope to pick up this game tomorrow.
Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and Jeremy for a delightful series of matches. :smoke:

I'd like to thank Harpgamer and Tony for the use of the server! Wow had a fun time last nite and it felt good going against someone other than the "AI".
I got hurt in the first scen as I had the time compression to high and by the time something happened I was like 3 minutes behind! Oh well you live and you learn.
Dont know what happened with the Nuke Starfish, I hit weapons free and the next thing you know I got Herman asking if I nuked him. Sure enough in the expenditures report there it was. "oops"
I was lucky in our final game in shooting down those harpoons...yes it WAS a pucker factor.
I think I know why it crashed..... earlier I had had some problems connecting and had to restart...I did NOT turn off my 2d proccessor (dual-core) when coming back in. MUST remember to shut down one next time. Is there a way to preset ANW to only use one processor or will I have to shut it down manually everytime?
All in all it was fun evening/morning and I'll probably be spending some time there more often now that I know it works.
Thanks!
On the server I use a piece of software called SetAffinity to permanently force H3 to use only a single processor/core. A link that works at present is http://www.amdzone.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=8124&sid=3967068e7d73a93909ea7e15c2e7ec7a .

That sounds a Dr. Strangelove (or Bedford Incident) kind of comment
The new "Weapons Free" behaviour has also been discussed:
H3ANW Auto-Defense Behavior (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67471)
Expendible Conscript (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67104)
But there are also rumblings about how AGSI might be changing it back, too, so who knows.... ;)

Elrandir came back for a second session and we chose Matrix Shield for the PlayersDB. I played a Russian contraband smuggler and Elrandir played the Swedish/Polish ASW forces.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19594&stc=1&d=1182977841
My lone Kilo was pitted against a combined force of Swedish PTM Hugin, FFL Goteborg, and a Polish FF Kaszub. Hardly an even matchup, but I had stealth on my side. Elrandir was beating the waters of the Baltic with his puny sonar while I crept up on him. I was hoping to neutralize the most formidable ships like the Goteborg and Kaszub, first. Unfortunately for me, one of his Hugin stumbled onto me and I had to pop him with a TEST-71 torpedo. It was an easy kill, but revealed my position. :(
As his ships began to swarm around me, I managed to localize the his Kaszub frigate and engaged her with two TEST-71 torpedoes. And they both MISSED! Argggh. Had to re-engage this formidable opponent with 2 more TEST-71, but by this time she had been able to loose a few SET-65 torpedoes in my direction, as well.
My TEST-71s caught him, this time, but he also got me with his return fire and thus won the scenario. Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and to Elrandir for the match. :smoke:

Jim Cobb (a.k.a. Bismarck) came back looking for revenge so we decided to play Dawn Patrol (re-made for the PlayersDB), again. This time, I played the Russians while Jim took the Norwegians.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19616&stc=1&d=1183320209
Jim got off to a pretty good start. One PTM Hugin came surging out of the fjords and detected one of my Nanuchka boats right away. We exchanged fire and his boat died, but it did a good job of revealing my location. Soon enough, my ship exploded from an unseen missile and the score was 1:1. Unfortunately, Jim had twice as many units as I did so I was waaay behind this game.
Since I thought I was going to lose, I decided to take some big risks. I lofted an SS-N-9 Siren on Bearing-Only-Launch under the premise of, "I shot an arrow into the air..." and it bore fruit. When she turned on her radar, she managed to find an enemy ship. I unloaded the rest of my battery on the same bearing and caught 2 more targets. Unfortunately, Jim did the same thing and blew my Nanuchka right out of the water. Now the score was 2:4.
Jim ran out of time and we decided to call this one a draw. A really superb effort by both sides with the endgame possibly going either way. Thanks to HarpGamer for the server and to Jim for a fun session.

The Harpoon ANW community welcomed (back) another Harpoon2 player from aeons gone by. Mark Jensen (a.k.a. CougarDK) got his baptism of fire when he came back looking for a match. We elected to play Dawn Patrol (re-made for the PlayersDB). I took the NATO side for our first engagement.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19667&stc=1&d=1184458964
The game was very quick. Both sides tried a stealthy approach so no one turned on any active sensors. Unfortunately for Mark, this meant that his force of 3 Nanuchka boats stumbled right into my PTM Hugins. A quick exchange of missiles and gunfire resulted in 5 flaming wrecks and victory awarded to NATO. Short and brutal. For his first encounter, Mark acquitted himself well by taking two enemy units under the waves with him.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19668&stc=1&d=1184459293
We switched sides and tried, again. This time, it was a much closer run as we totally expended our SSM magazines at one another and were then forced to finish the engagement with an old-fashioned gun duel that was waaay too close for my comfort.
We ended the session with a few matches of Power Sweep, by Dave Steinmeyer, for the PlayersDB. Mark is as good a sub driver as he is a missile boat commander.

The Harpoon ANW community welcomed two new players, today. Jerome Chiecchio was been a Harpoon Classic player looking for the MP touch while Eds received his baptism of fire, multi-player style. Everyone showed up at about the same time, so we decided to let the new guys play against each other with me observing in case they had any questions. We decided to play Dawn Patrol (re-made for the PlayersDB). Ed took the Russian side for the first round while Jerome played NATO.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19744&stc=1&d=1185692956
As the neutral observer, it was quite interesting to watch two players approach the game in different ways. Both wanted to play quite slowly in order not to receive any unpleasant surprises. Jerome was new to the Harpoon3 interface and had problems controlling his ships. Some got separated and, soon enough, 3 fell victim to SS-N-9 Siren missiles the moment they activated their radar.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19745&stc=1&d=1185692956
I thought that Jerome was finished, but he really surprised me. It just goes to show how much firepower each of his little boats actually has. As they fumbled around in the dark with each man reluctant to activate his radar for fear of revealing his position, his surviving force of 4 boats detected the 3 Russian Nanuchkas and unleashed hell upon them. All three were sunk in the blink of an eye. An excellent comeback for Jerome.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19746&stc=1&d=1185692956
Pumped from their first encounter, Jerome and Ed decided to switch sides and play, again. This time, both players tried to disperse their commands. Unfortunately, this time, Jerome was not so lucky. Two of his three boats were quickly found and destroyed. His surviving boat managed to exact a toll from NATO, but it was a matter of insufficient firepower to finish the job. I found it very interesting how Jerome tried to throw a feint at his opponent by heading off in a different direction before activating his radar in hopes of leading Ed to the wrong conclusion.

I had a great evening thanks to you guys.:)
You were right Herman, i'm hooked after the first go:D

So finally here I am begging Tony to reset that server so that we can play again. Herman gave me enough guidance to get me going. This looks great!
So Tony, thanks for the server, I hope it gets a lot of use in the future with a strong H3 MP community.

Hehe, I had a talk with the ANW server, it was still up and thought it was hosting a 3-player game, but it wasn't of course. It is ready again :)

The Harpoon ANW community got another player from the land down-under, today. Hughc61 came looking for a game and we elected to try the classic Dawn Patrol (re-made for the PlayersDB). I took the Russian side for our first engagement while Hugh led the Norwegians.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19789&stc=1&d=1186043689
Although the game was somewhat quick, it was absolutely brutal. Neither side wanted to reveal their position, so we approached under Emissions Control [EmCon]. As I neared the area my orders instructed me to clear, I decided to risk activating my radar from one of my PTM Nanuchka missile boats. Grami turned on her radar and hit the jackpot. An entire NATO task group all laid out like clay pigeons at a target range.
Missile fire was exchanged, but the Norwegian boats were quickly overwhelmed and annihilated. Although Victory had been granted the Russians, we decided to continue play to see if he could exact revenge.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19790&stc=1&d=1186043689
As I searched for his final Hugin missile boat, missiles suddenly appeared over an island. Evidently, he had been hiding in between the little islands. Luckily, he only fired a pair of missiles and they were shot down. However, this little boat fought like a lion and came close to destroying at least a couple of my ships before succumbing to one last SS-N-9 Siren. Guess I should have taken the win when it was offered to me... ;)
Next day, Hugh came back for revenge..... and got it!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19668&stc=1&d=1184459293
We chose to play Power Sweep, by Dave Steinmeyer, for the PlayersDB. I took the NATO side and Hugh played the Russians.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19791&stc=1&d=1186043689
SSN Spartan got an long-ranged subsurface contact that turned out to be a Victor II SSN. After a quiet approach, a pair of Spearfish torpedoes quickly caught the Russian boat at a depth of 300m and imploded her hull. I thought that things were going well... and then Spartan vanished in a nuclear cloud!
Arrrggh. I guess that all's fair in war. With only a lone SSK Kobben remaining, I tried to even the score. After creeping to extreme range of a Tango-class sub, I decided to engage from maximum range because I was afraid that I would be counter-detected and destroyed by more nuclear fire before I could release my torpedoes.
A salvo of 3 torpedoes spread out towards him, and Hugh evaded them all! Man, could he drive his boat. A second wave of 3 torpedoes resulted in more of the same. With only two NT-37E torpedoes left in the tubes, I tried to close the distance, but sonar suddenly reported a torpedo approaching...
Evidently, Hugh had delivered an aerial torpedo via SS-N-15 Starfish. I never heard it so it must have hit me from my baffles. A truly great re-match.
Many thanks to Hugh for a superb challenge in handing me my head. :D
And thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server.

Jerome (a.k.a. Angle of Attack) came looking for his first game of ANW so I obliged him since he bought ANW specifically to play against another human. Jerome's a native Argentine and former Air Force pilot, so we decided to play something related to his homeland, Malvinas II (re-made for the PlayersDB). AoA assumed command of his country's forces and I played the UK side.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19792&stc=1&d=1186045587
As the British Task force commander, I really had no idea where the Argentine forces were. My only intelligence report said that they were east of the Falklands. I had my AEW helos up along with Harriers on Combat Air Patrol, but they were of little use. Quite often, Argentine planes were detected only visually!
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19793&stc=1&d=1186045248
It was pretty exhilarating to play a battle with such limited sensors. One flight managed to get close enough to loose a pair of Exocet missiles and bomb Sir Galahad before finally being shot down. I can certainly appreciate the difficulties faced by the historic TF Commander, Adm. Sandy Woodward.
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19794&stc=1&d=1186045248
My strategy was to try and rely upon the AEW helos and my Harriers for radar coverage, but that failed miserably due to th
