Computer Gaming World has released the first hundred or so issues in PDF. Check out the article called "The Future of Wargaming" from 1986. Chris Crawford called the current state of affairs 20 years ago!

It's just sad that some of the differences he has highlighted STILL aren't accepted by many in the wargaming community (like real time and real terrain effects).

Thanks, I got it to d/l here at work.

That was a great look-back... TRS-80s, SSI (are they around anymore?), Reagan as President *Elect*!?! I love those retro, throw-back drawings as well.

On his five computers capability predications:

(1) computer's computational power allows human to be player, not calculator. THIS HAS HAPPENED.
(2) limited intel wargames. THIS HAS HAPPENED, BIG TIME
(3) good solitaire games. VERY FEW AIs ARE 'GOOD' (outside of ATF's of course!).
(4) real-time play. IN THEORY, I GUESS YES, BUT I DON'T THINK MOST PLAYERS IN MARKET WANT REAL-TIME.
(5) computer networks. HE WAS RIGHT ON HERE. RIGHT ON. HE COULD HAVE MADE A LOT OF MONEY INVESTING ON THAT TREND :cool:

Too bad Atari never made it...

I think he missed one upgrade that still isn't universally embraced but should be in the age of computers: NO HEXES

Good point Pat. HEXES are a huge artificial model that has plagued wargames since inception. Its a concept that needs to be trash-canned.... When is the last time you heard an S-3 say movement can only be in directions denoted in 45 degrees!?! :laugh:
