View Full Version : Map Design Aid (?)
What happens if you insist in making an SP map, by combining data from two or three maps/images and you're not Achilles, Wulfir, DD, Cameronius or ---- [input your favorite map designer]? You make an excel worksheet to help you through the workshιt! (excuse my language!). So I made one. Its basic aim is to allow you to relate latitude / longitude coordinates to map hexes (and visa versa). At this stage this is accomplished through "simple" map projection equations (Mercator-spherical earth assumption) and a little home-made math. You can consider it in beta stage. There is an info doc accompanying the workbook.
Any kind of input will be greatly appreciated! :hurray:

Hey, what's up with you Greeks and your mathematical calculation fetishes? You and Achilles have to make things so complicated and analytical.
BTW - did you guys hear about this new movie coming out? --> 300 (http://300themovie.warnerbros.com/) http://www.spartantailgate.com/forums/images/statusicon/forum_old.gif<-- Yes I know its green, its the best I could come up with. ;)
Yeah, that film is gonna be BIG when it comes out, it just looks so nice and surreal while also maintaining some historical element. When is it out, the site doesnt say?

Well... you know ...Euclides and all that... plus we're both engineers... plus I'm a bit  by default! :D. Actually it's not so complicated... is it?
As for Thermopylae... well you can expect the better and the worst from Hollywood but as far as historical accuracy I expect the "worst" side to show. I hope the producers try to understand the whats, whos and whys of the real thing or else we'll end up watching the 300 Zinas!
(In which case no thanks! one is enough).
Hi,
I think that the second zip file (map-design-aid-mada) is corrupted, because I can't DL it.
cheers,
Pyros
In case you have any problem downloading MaDA from the 1st post try here:
Baggelh,
Your work is exceptional!
But here is one remark:
1. Perhaps you could find a way to make it possible (and easy) to work (and easily import) with digitised data (or anything that comes in the form of GIS tables.
I would see it handy if the data sheet could convert a whole GIS quadrant and then the user could limit the display to a region of his choice (you know, if for example you have the whole map of Attiki and the user limit the choices to the region of Glyfada; by defining the four corners of a smaller quadrant)
cheers,
Pyros

Working on it already. I'm trying to do it via Microdem as it's a freeware programme. The problem is that digital topography is not my "thing" and the microdem help files ... well they're not so helpful .
And as we're talking about map design aids what kind of output do you think would be helpful for an SP map designer:
A map which will include an appropriate representation of the hex grid, or
a list (lets say in EXCEL) which will include hex number(s) and terrain level
Ok, I know, probably both! :D
Vaggelh,
I believe a map which will include an appropriate representation of the hex grid, with the following three values: X, Y coordinates and the height level value would be sufficient because the designing of the map is mainly a visual task.
...Γι' αυτό λένε ότι η τρέλα δεν πάει στα βουνά... Που μένεις είπαμε?...Κοντά στη θάλασσα?

... and make a decent cup of coffee too, eh!

Πλάκα στην πλάκα, μένω στη Γλυφάδα... Λές να φταίει αυτό;
