I noticed a few things fighting the AI. Two things mostly:
1 - There are no scripts in any of the HPS Peninsula games I played, meaning the computer was set to blanket attack/defence.
2 - The AI loves walking into swamps, and will happily march a brigade through the White Oak Swamps for no apparent reason!

Is this typical? Is the AI ever a good challenge? Any specific maps I can try?

I've found that once you get even a little experience the AI is not a very good opponent in any of the ACW games I've played, whether HPS or Talonsoft. I would think your best bet would be to stick with the smaller scenarios as there is less time and troops to get off track.

And...scripts are useless in larger scenarios anyway, as the human can do any number of things that would totaly counter the script orders.

Small actions on small maps are your only real option, if you don't want to play against others.

Yeah, I guess that's why they say the big maps are bad for AI battles. It is fun watching the computer bullrush your entrenchments and get massacred. Even better, charging with limbered artillery and getting shot down.

I have noticed that AI does better when you do not use the manual defensive fire option. The AI still has difficulty executing river crossing operations.
