View Full Version : Skirmishers????
a little guidance is needed here gents on the proper use of skirmishers. I think they are best suited for movement into 'thick' terrain so you dont run face first into a hidden enemy......am I on the right track here or am I missing something????

I'd say you were right. About the only time I ever use them is in woods so I can spot the enemy a little quicker.
In woods, but also on the other side of a ridge, so I don't have to expose my regiments, but will know if the enemy moves to the other side out of my LOS.

They are very usefull in woods when movement cost in this terrain is 5 mvp (Corinth, Ozark, Peninsula). Then enemy unit pay 8 mvp to enter hex under skirmishers control and don't have sufficient mvp's to move further.
In this way you can completly slow down your enemy by constantly falling back your units with skirmishers or be warned that something is comming.
When movement cost in the woods in 4 (other titles) they are less usefull as enemy can go thru your skirmisher zone.
That's why I think that infantry movement cost in forest = 5 is better than 4.

I also tend to deploy them at night, just to see if my dastardly foe is moving around at all on his side of the line.
You do get some minor combat benefits from having skirms out, but I generally don't thikn they're worth the extra movement cost if you don't have other reason to have them out.
tks guys...I thought I was on the right track but wanted to be sure......good pts also guys about ridgelines, nighttime and delaying tactics.just what I was looking for. :smoke:
