View Full Version : How do you link scenarios to OOBs
I've been back and forth through the help files for the Order of Battle editor and the Scenario editor but I can find no instructions on how you relate a particular scenario file to a particular OOB file. What am I missing here?

Hi Jim,
When you first create a scenario, the creation process asks for what OOB to include, if it is a "new" scenario. If you are altering an existing scenario and want to include a different OOB in the scenario, then you need to open it in a text editor. Right near the top of the file you will find an entry with the oob filename in it, replace that entry with the oob filename you want to use and all should be okay.

To elaborate further on what Rick said - there is no game function to switch a scn from reading one OOB to a different alternative OOB because the process, depending upon the care taken in altering the original OOB, can often result in more errors occuring when the scn is loaded.
Thus a player wishing to do this, and using a text editor to do so, knows he is out on a limb and messing with files.
That said - if you create your own OOB from what we've provided and then you use that OOB to create your own scns from scratch, you should be OK as long as you don't remove any units from the OOB that the Scn calls.

To add my 0.02:
Careful is the key! I've had good results creating an OOB for any scenario I design, even if I'm merely copying and pasting a division or two from the stock OOB. I usually keep 2 of the same OOB editor open at a time so that I can compare and avoid errors.
I've never used the notepad feature for changing an OOB in a modified scenario, but I have used text editing to generate a map for a scenario.
This link is uber-helpful:

The trick - if there is one - is to NEVER remove a unit from the OOB that is called by the Scn. That is - every unit in the OOB has a numerical ID assigned to is when it is added to the OOB.
A unit number could be "12345678"
When you place this unit in the scn file - what actually goes in the SCN file is "12345678".
If you then remove this unit for the OOB and open the scn - the Scn editor will fail at that point.
What I do sometimes is NOT delete units until I rename them DELETE ME
Then I open the Scn file and do a FIND | "DELETE ME" and remove it from the scn file. However this won't find it if the unit is in reinforcements so it isn't a perfect system for say Airborne units which often start the game off the Map. But it does work OK in most Stalingrad CGs where "what you see is what you get"

Thanks guys, for all your help. My reason for wanting an alternate OOB is that I need to make additions and changes to the game OOB. I have no qualms about changing the game OOB for my own personal use, but if I want to offer an alternative scenario for the public at large I don't think it's right to put one out there that overwrites the game OOB with one of my creation.
