Well I have had my 'Big Battle' ... Cor! I know they say that no battleplan survives contact with the enemy but sheesh!

Russian (ahem!) Grand Pacific Fleet consist:-

Fast BShip Div (8 ships 18kt Div speed)
Slow BShip Div (8 ships 15Kt Div Speed)
ArmCru Div (7 ships 16Kt Div Speed)
TBD Div (8 shipd 27kt div speed)

After 4 encounters with the IJN battlefleet (6 BShips+4 AC) and as their speed was 17kts they got away

5th time lucky, just after dawn so loads time ..... the chase was on :horse:.
By this time I had separated out the 1 15kt BShip from the Slow BShip Div adn the 2 16kt AC from the ArmCru Div (so the parent Divs could get up to 19kts and 16Kts) and was slowly gaining .... I hoped to get near and slow down the IJN fleet so that the slow ships would be able to get in range.

They started firing at very long range but with no hits as I got to approx 12,000m I gave the order to "Shoot!" .... at the same time I sent the TBD div to flank speed and overhaul the IJN fleet (about 10,000m away to port of them but no-one opened fire (phew!)
When the TBD Div was about 8,000m in front of them I reversed course and headed straight at them - now the hope was to get them to veer-off and of course to fire some torpedoes off in the hope of slowing down the fleet giving the chasing BShips a chance to gain. Well it worked ... sort of .... they did a 90 turn to port but if any torps did hit (or even fire:hmmm:) then they didnt slow. Although shortly after I got some (or a hit) which got them down to 16kts ... so far so good then (btw all TBD got sunk:upset:)

Then came the "Wha...!!" I realised that they were heading toward the coast - pic 1

As indicated the IJN fleet headed for that basin:surprise: (at this point I should point out that I was so immersed in the battle (and it was 2:20am) that I completely forgot the pause - with the chance to actually give it some thought)
Anyway, quick think and sent the slower ships around to the lower entrance and slowed the faster ships and headed to cork the neck of the upper entrance.

Initially I was going to actually stop the ships across the necks and fire into the IJN ships - pic 2

....But before I had positioned my ships, the IJN ships began to disappear!! ... "Oh Noes!" I thought theres a base or summit where they have escaped:angry:

.... so I upped speed and sent all ships toward the basin hoping to catch the last ship or mebbe 2 .... leaving 2 AC at the upper entrance in case any escaped.

That lower channel is very fiddly to get ships up and it was almost a minute before I realised that the IJN Fleet had merely gone "out of sight" because Oh! there they are .. predictably in a complete formational shambles trying to form up AND avoid ramming each other heh heh

But silly arse that I am I sent both parts of my battle fleet into the basin and what ensued can only be described as a "Close-Melee" or 'Battleship knife-fight' - pic 3

Whoo-ee!! I am not gonna do that again talk about hectic!!!

Final scores - IJN lost all ships 6 BS+4AC and I lost 10 ships (7 slow BShips, 2 slow AC and 1 fast AC, with 8 with only moderate/light damage

:hurray:

that was day 331 .... its now day 402 and I havent seen any IJN warship at all (must have sunk 'em all I guess) ... I almost miss my commerce
raiding groups having to run away but looking forward to the completion (and having read the threads, being prepared to find out that Japan has won - despite 95 A/B/C/D/E-Marus and 219 neutrals sunk even at the minimum 3K tons each thats 95x3 and x2 = 570Ktons and 219x3 = 657 so total = 1,227ktons ... but if it does I wont mind to much ......'cos I'll know - cue manic laugh here -)

C'mon, CJ, don't tell me you didn't save the game several times in the middle of this battle! Surely you can go back to the saves and take some screenshots for us :).

Eeek!! .... :OHNO: Oh my gawd! .... to be completely honest I didnt realise that you can save battles in progress
I really must read the manual properly (also missed the 'S' key bit too) Ive always played the battles through to the end .. why did I get it into my head that you could only save when in the campaign screen? aaarrrggghhh!

... ah well thanks for the heads up ... gonna find my favourite bit of brick wall with the forehead shaped dent in and use it again:argh:
