Firstly I am sure I have seen the answer somewhere before, problem being I have forgotten where, failing all else old age, I think. :OHNO:

In the Unit Hierarchy window you can select a unit and Edit it. One entry in this Edit Dialog, or the Hierarchy Element data, window is Rank.
When a unit has no rank chance it is given a value of -99. But if the Unit has Platoon Leader or company Command capable, the rank value is given a number 1 onwards.

Yes,...what is your question?

The number denotes in what order this unit will take charge. So, the PL would have a rank of 1, while the PSG (platoon sergeant) would have a rank of 2. The PL would lead first, and the PSG would take over if the PL was shot.
