Future Cross Club Tournies

Ok lads we failed to feild a team for the CMBO Cross Club Tourney. I wish to fix this for future times and from my understanding there will be Cross Club Tourney with CMBB and CMAK. We will not fail this time. I purpose to have teams made up now and on the books. I or whom ever is in charge in the future will be able to draw on the names and e-mail addresses. If you wish to be involved in either or both state this on the thread and send me you e-mail address(s) and I will confirm I recieved them.
We can have more then one team in the future tournies. We will use the set up as with the the CMBO one. Ten (10) players per team. Please state if you would like to be a possible captain of a team. You will be contacted in the future if needed. The rules or what a captain does will be sent to you by e-mail if you are interested in the position. After reading them, please let me know if you still would do the job.

That is fine by me. You do know..alot of the time the guy on point tends to survive as he gets past so they can spring the ambush on the rest of the guys. BTW does our SZO club have any kind of actual name, you know like those other guys have Few Good Men, Kamph Gruppe etc. I think we ought to have some sort of military connotations to our team name for tournament purposes. Just plain old SZO makes us sound like one of those beer guzzling hockey teams that gets sponsored for some bush industrial league.

I think that without a fighting type name we lure them into a feeling of false security and then we spring our fiendish trap and besides i think most other sites still think were called WarfareHQ.

Well you know the old saying, use or lose it. We get these volunteers all pumped up up for a tournament that may be months away, then when the tournament comes nobody will be around. More seriously.....save all the files to all your games and (if you lose a game) get the password from your opponent.

Go over the game in detail. Look at their unit selections and ask them why they chose what the did. Look at how they move and how they play. Really study the game and THINK. Analyse what went right and what went wrong. Look at the game from your opponent's point of view too.

Play Attack-Defend games and Scenarios. Forget the MEs. Too often the map decides those games and you can miss important lessons.

We should play some of the ROW scenarios. I don't think anyone one of us has played them. 204172 is also thinking of challenging another group (I will let him spring the surprise) and I don't think they have play them either.

As far as practice.......play the A/Ds and scenarios like I said above. Try to find the best player you can and get your ass kicked. Then get his password and watch the movies and ask him questions and learn.

I learned alot getting my ass kick by him and watched how he moves etc. and that is one reason my games are getting better.:smoke:

Play Attack-Defend games and Scenarios. Forget the MEs. Too often the map decides those games and you can miss important lessons.Nemesis, maybe you could enlighten us (me?) further on this part. I can understand the scenario bit but not why a QB Attack-Defend would be better then a QB ME? The problem with AI maps is the chance of getting a shallow unbalanced map that may strongly favor one side. This chance has the same potential in both types of games does it not?

It is just a personal belief (and I have played tons of MEs). There is no right or wrong answer, but I will explain my thinking.

An ME essentially consists of both "Attacking" and "Defending." One could say it is actually superior because it tests both skills in a single game.

However, IMHO it is better for a new player to develop Defend skills as a dedicated Defender and Attack skills as a dedicated Attacker.

A classic Attack has a lot to do with timing, combining arms, suppression and manuevering. A Defense has a lot to do with reading terrain, plotting the movement of reinforcements and carefully building kill zones that take apart your opponent's combined arms machine in a specific manner.

These skills are HARD for a new player to learn. Trying to learn them in an ME is even harder because they are more chaotic. Both sides are moving and simultaneously attacking and defending.

A new player in "attack mode" often doesn't think to time his attacks appropriately or to combine arms. He often just adopts the strategy of rushing to the flags and fighting on the fly with whatever he has. Chaos reigns and many lessons go unlearned.

Similarly, a new player in "defend mode" will have a hard time building kill zones on the fly. He misses out on the good mental practice of building a solid defense.

A/Ds also allow you to use fortifications, so the new player gets experience with these.

Hence, A/Ds are better "basic skill builders." Learn basic "attack" and "defend" skills in A/Ds and then take them to the more chaotic MEs.

A/Ds = Learn to Walk. MEs = Learn to Run. The great irony is that most people do this the other way around--they learn on MEs and then get into A/Ds.

I think both Wayne and Mangus have learned a lot from their recent A/Ds. If you read their AARs and posts they are talking about the importance of timing attacks, combining arms, and manuevering to get "many versus one" situations. They will take these skills back to MEs and apply them to great effect. It is just easier for them to learn in A/Ds.
