View Full Version : Is there something like a ship log function in DG?

Hello,
I just started playing the DG campaign and I think it is great! But I wonder if there is some function in the game which shows me how many ships have been sunk by my fleet. As far as I know the Russians need to sink about 375k tons to win the campaign. Now my cruisers are busy sinking merchantman every day but and the reports in the upper left corner of the campaign map tells me Russia is about to win the campaign, but I don't know the exact numbers. It would also be interesting if one could see which of my cruisers has sunk most of the ships. Maybe there is a way to access these figures but I didn't find it yet. Can anybody help me?
Greetings,

Look under 'news' (F2 key) that lists all merchant shipping sunk or captured by the Russians (but not it's tonnage - the game doesn't count tonnage, all ships being considered equal and the Marus double the value of neutrals). You need to sink/capture about 100 ships to win. I'm playing as the Japanese at the moment and have simply wiped the Russian navy off the seas - the BB sqn is sitting in Port Arthur but the Russians only captured about 5 merchantmen in the first two weeks of the war and since then have not even put to sea. It is now July and Port Arthur has been under siege since the end of June so I'm expecting a desperate break out attempt any day now. :)

Thanks, Saddletank,
I had seen the 'news'-function of the F2key already, but I thought of something showing more details. But since the game is not counting tonnage but single ships as you say I think it is all right. As to the success of my Russians up to now I am surprised myself about that. Since the beginning of the campaign the Russians sank at least one ship a day, including a lot of those tiny auxiliary cruisers. The Japanese seem to have a whole fleet of these useless ships. So except of my loosing one armoured cruiser in an obvious trap yesterday everything is fine with the Russians. Good for me that you're not Togo in my game!

If you are losing merchantships at the rate of 1 a day you need to reconsider your strategy, after 4 months you'll have lost the war! :OHNO:

Not quite correct. Tonnage is indeed counted, and all merchants are not considered equal. Steamers are fairly generic, but even the neutrals come in three flavors: 6000, 4500, and 3000 tons. Their internal victory values are 4, 3, and 2 respectively. Japanese steamers rate twice the victory value by tonnage. A 3000 ton "C. Maru" is worth the same as a 6000 ton neutral.

Hello Norm,
could you tell me what it is about these little japanese 'auxiliary cruisers'? It appears they are not armed though the flyout says they are carrying four small guns. But actually none of those which I sank during the campaign ever shot at my ships. Do they count as merchantmen or are they navy ships?

These are a mixed bag, some impressed into wartime service and others operated by the navy before the war. The armament is not the big deal with these ships. Their purpose is to stumble across Russians at sea and let the "real" navy know about it. The IJN can keep heavy ship patrols going constantly, but without the extra eyes of the aux cruisers they have to depend upon dumb luck to intercept Russian surface raiders.
In the long run, it pays the Russians to sink these things whenever they run across them. This will help "blind" the IJN. Unfortunately, the cost in ammo and time engaged makes sinking these goofy things more expensive than most Russian players would prefer. And it can be really embarrasing to chase one of these things until it leads you right into a serious IJN task force. Most Russian surface raider groups will have a very rough time with a typical IJN task force.
In 1.018 and later, the small guns will fire (before, guns without explicit model mounts were being treated as being at water line level, and would not fire unless wave height was very small), but those 37mm and 47mm guns won't do much to anything bigger than a torpedo boat.

Right, with build 1.018 these things fire like mad - one of them even damaged a Russian light cruiser! Then I stumbled over one which was armed with four 15cm guns. My Russian cruiser had to keep quite a lot of distance to avoid being severely damaged by this evil little beast. Finally I sank it but it took me nearly an hour and at least one third of my ammo! Be careful when approaching these ships!

Thanks, I didn't know that as it's not information I've seen given anywhere. Do the merchants advertise this info if you mouse over them?

That would have been one of their corvettes, similar looking beasties but much bigger guns. As you found out :)

The only place I've been able to find a merchant's displacement is on its "I" screen.
NOTE: neither the 3D model nor the ship's recycled name has anything to do with the displacement. You'll see the same names and models over and over, but each time they have different displacements.
