View Full Version : Announcing: Tripolitania To Tobruk CMAK Tourney
TacCovert4
30 Aug 06, 13:26
Afrika Korpsmen and Desert Rats:
I come to you today to announce the Tripolitania to Tobruk CMAK Tournament.
This tournament will follow the time period from February 1941 until May 1941, fighting the key engagements in Rommel's initial push across the desert. From Benghazi to the Stalemate at Tobruk, to the Tiger Cubs and Battleaxe, this tournament is for anyone who wants to fight in the desert.
The Tournament will be 5 battles long, and will be heavily influenced by the statistics and forces in my library on Rommel's early campaigns.
We (Mangus and I) will take the first 10 pairs (20 players) as the primary contestants. As this tourney is victory by ending points, we will be accepting alternates after the first 20. Or alternates if we have an odd number of players less than 20.
Thank you,
Daniel Hines

Desert warfare. I've never played one in the open desert.
The terrain has never appealed to me.
Have played a couple in semi-arable terrain (ie mixed oasis or small hills).
Nows a good reason to get immersed.

I'd like to be part of this if being a newbie doesn't upset the balance. I like the desert battles.

I hate desert maps too. They are a pain in a$$, you have to get right down to ground level to see all the tiny folds in the ground and the moment your men put their heads up BLAM in the head:mad:
I never understand them:hmmm: ..... I guess living in a country with water everywhere :drink: and winter that seems to be around for six months of the year:clap: .....This could be understandable.;) :smoke:

Unfortunately, neither Mangus nor Myself is eligible for the tourney. We'll probably content ourselves to beating the snot out of each other for beta testing and bragging rights.
The current players are:

antonius
jdsu
Colonel Talvela
The Hooded One
2054172 (Mr. Numberz)
Iron Mike USMC
That's 7. 13 More slots availible.
To answer the other questions: The 20 players will be paired off each game to a different player.
This is an individual action tourney, no teams. (Maybe for the next one if this goes alright)
Newbies are welcome as well as top players. I and Mangus will endeavor both to give a challenging match to all, and a chance for new players to take on some of the old hats.
The first pairings will be based on ladder ranks. All other pairings will be based on the performance during the last battle. So you ambitious new guys: Here's your chance to show your stuff, the better you do, the higher ranked players you play.

It might have accidentally been garnered from that ladder. oooops. It doesn't matter that much anyway as after the prologue pairings will be based on tourney performance, not ladder standings.
And to give a bit of a clue as to some of the setups for the tourney, i mean scenarios, just be prepared to use tactics and equipment that is out of the normal range for what I commonly refer to as: Mass Warfare Tank Fighting.
That is all.

Also, I'll be getting the first files out tomorrow, along with a mass list of every participant's current e-mail address. The only thing left undone on the scenario is to alter the briefings to reflect the new force compositions.
So if anyone else wants to play, send me an email before, say 1400 tomorrow, and I'll put you in somewhere. Otherwise you'll be an alternate. Thanks for your understanding.

My invite indicated who I should send the file to.
I opened the scenario, and it automatically made me the Italians.
I set up my forces, and sent the file to my opponent.
I cannot respond to whether this is a matched series. I will find out if my opponent sends me a file different than the one I sent him.
TacCovert4
19 Sep 06, 16:52
To answer all the questions:
The Tournament is mirrored, that way any errors in force composition or starting postition to one side or the other do not affect the outcome of a round.
Both competitors were sent the exact same email, requesting that they open the file, start a turn, and send it to the other player.
The scenario is tournament saved with Axis as the default starting player, so when anybody opens the file to start a game, they will be the Italians in this case. As it is tourney saved, you cannot open the scenario in the editor. At the end of each round, I will make the original files availible if requested, or I will post them to the appropriate location.
This is the smallest scenario concieved for the tourney. If you think it is too small to make you think, don't worry, It is my intention to make every battle progressively larger, so starting small gave me ample elbow room for development.

I did VC, but I'm having a little trouble getting emails from at least one of the others. Neither jdsu or mixmaster has responded, and without at least one more player, you're kind of the odd man out. I'm sorry about the inconvenience.
If there is any current player that wouldn't mind playing a second set of games, or any non involved player that wants to be, this is your chance. For the current players, your score for the tournament would be determined by your best performance, not your aggregate. In plain english, you get your best score for the round, not a combination.

Good,
The map for round 2 is done, mangus will be putting the TO&E to it shortly, and give a couple of days to run over it before we turn you loose. To those that finished so quickly, I'm sorry that we've got such a gap in games, some are on turn 6 and some have been done for a couple of days, but I'll try to get round two started soon enough that you won't be bored for very long.
As far as scoring goes, send me an email detailing who your opponent was, and what kind of victory or loss occurred. I'll work with Palantir to get everything posted on the ladder as it should be. Plus I'll keep score for who gets the extra ladder points for being first and second and the honorable mention.
Once the battles are done, I'll post in tactical talk about a couple of the little things that I threw in for each side, and how they can be best utilized.

Odd,
I thought I had given the Italians plenty of gear to successfully complete their mission of attritting the raiding force. I played it both sides against the admittedly stupid computer for complete victory. Therefore I assumed that it was reasonably balanced. I'll keep that in mind.
But as a note: The Italians are not for tank generals, and my own preset starting positions are not the best possible for them. It's best to let the Brits pound themselves against the infantry and let the AT weapons work them over a bit before bringing in the armor.
BRO Sapper
25 Oct 06, 09:54
TAC COVERT 4,
I think the Italians can win, but it is harder to win with them than it is with the Brits. The AC can't take out the Bren Carriers reliably, the 20mm flak can't kill a Cruiser reliably, and the ATRs won't kill anything but a Bren Carrier on an average day, they'll run or cower first. So your left with either watching your infantry surrender under the guns of your opponent (as the Hooded One did) or bringing them up and risking their destruction in a 2:1 fight (as I did). Neither is a great option. As you say, the key is in massive repositioning of the Italians, in retrospect, I probably should've moved more than I did in the first place.
TacCovert4
25 Oct 06, 10:21
I'll cover this more once rd 2 starts, but the key that I found was to use the high number of possible locations your AT assets could be to force your opponent to defend along several routes. Personally, I held my tanks back from the early fight, as they are outnumbered and outgunned. I hid the entirety of my force to allow the Brits to close in danger close before I opened up on a single tank with my entire suite of AT rifles. A good crossfire from several points against an enemy tank will kill it somewhat quickly. My tanks and ACs pretty much waited until my AT assets had attritted the enemy armored force, not the Bren Carriers, as far as they could, then raced across the desert to bolster my weakening infantry defense. I had virtually no reserves.
The two things that give the Italians a prayer are that they are defending, and it is night. Also, the map limits the number of efficient routes the enemy force can take, so defenders can stage a series of bloody ambushes. If it were daylight, the superior numbers of Brit tanks and the British mortar teams would make it impossible for the Italians to even cause significant casualties.

The goal for this tournament is to at least start small, so that old and new players alike get experience and fun out of it. While I can't say that the final battle won't be that big, we're endeavoring to keep it somewhere in the 6-8 thousand range.

I couldnt belive his one italian inf squad that was in a small building infront of the 2 story building by the airport. I had two tanks shooting at him, one parked about 8 meters away, a full platoon shooting at him plus 2 brens and a sniper and 2 Bren carriers and he held that whole force up for 3 turns before they finally died. They never broke or ran. I will get the airport but talk about a little holding up a lot!

If you have finished your game for round 1:
Send an email to Mangus:

Bertram's Brits have lost!!! I held the airport and intersection but lost all my tanks moving forward too recklessly. The last one exploded violently when the ammo storage was hit by a tungsten round. Schreck played cautiously to his advantage. 7 full squads were in the mosque and he had driven 3 armored cars off map in the last couple of turns. With my last tank gone his 7 squads, 2 mortars and MG would have cleaned me out without reinforcements coming to my rescue. Well done Schreck!

Good games Bertram! I foolishly wasted my proud sons of England too early in my game as the Brits. :paperbag: Even the crafty use of my tanks and the full on slaughter of his entire armored force coupled with the capturing of the Crossroads and Airport VLs couldnt save me from a draw. John's excellent game play and insanely brave squad held me up and kept me from being able to accomplish anything else before the time ran out.
In the game with me as the Italians my 20mm AAG did all the killing. It killed 2 tanks, made 1 other bail, Immobilized 1, killed a BC, made another Bail, killed 6 infantry and captured 1 infantry. Those boys are getting all kinds of medals. They were eventually knocked out but the crew only lost one man and they managed to sneak to a brushy area and hide out for the rest of the game and they avoided being captured. The rest of the Airport defense force manage to live long enough to delay the enemy force and keep them away from the main VL at the Mosque until it was too late in the game for him to do anything. Thats what i wanted to happen and it worked out well. Killing that last tank with one shot from an ATR was the icing on the cake. Pure luck, but ill take it.
Once again John was a top notch opponent! Cant wait to play him some more games!

It's good to hear that the balance of the scenario was about what I had thought when I designed it. I got scared early on as everyone was claiming these wild rolling charges by the Brits, which in playtesting had always resulted in my losing virtually all my mobility. In fact, I added the smoke tank simply because I couldn't keep from getting raped by the 20mm AA.

In our games neither player has lost a British tank though I think one of Ed's may be immobilised. The Brits will probably have won both though they're pretty close.

So far the 20mm has played no significant part in either game.

15 Nov 06, 09:31
The thing that really screws both the 20mm AA and the Tanks is that at night, you can't see past 150 meters or so, and you can't have anyone spotting for you. But at those ranges, should a Tank meet the AA, the AA has the advantage because it is dug in, and has a much higher rate of fire. Not to mention that the AA has the right ammo loadouts for the job.
Don't worry, Battle 2 is a daytime thing, so you battlefield suppressive fire gurus, have at it.

The key is to swarm the 20mm AAG with multiple tanks or infantry units after having smoked it with the smoke tank or mortars. That would be the ideal situation. But the problem with that is by the time it came round to dealing with it your either out of time or dont have enough of one unit or another. In my case i had enough tanks to do it and enough smoke in the smoke tank, but i ran out of time in the scenario. I was positioned to make my move on the gun when time ran out.

And that is how it is supposed to be. It's a raid, so your mission was to secure the documents and "prisoners" not to actually take or destroy any installations. Destroying installations was the secondary objective.

I don't like mirrored games, I am probably in the minority of this, it just seems that each player has too much information about the opposing forces. There doesn't seem to be any difference in forces.

I don't like mirrored games, I am probably in the minority of this, it just seems that each player has too much information about the opposing forces. There doesn't seem to be any difference in forces.
To Cherper in particular, and the TtT community in general:
As those of you that design scenarios for multiplayer play already know, devising force mixxes and maps that can be considered truly neutral for either side is highly difficult. To do so requires a lot of playtesting against live players, and a bit of assumption by the designers. As mangus and I cannot really be considered master players, or designers, we opted in the beginning to go with a mirrored tournament, feeling that such a setup would help alleviate any scoring discrepancies caused by an accidental incident of overwhelming strength on one side or the other. The wild range of scores in battle 1 justified this.
In round 1, I did ask about doing non mirrored games, and the poll recieved a hearty response towards the yes. The reason that Battle 2 is being mirrored therefore is twofold.
1) The major problem with B1 being mirrored was that the setup zones were artificially limited to accurately represent a night raid and a garrisonned defender not expecting any sort of attack. This, however, did create the problem of players knowing pretty much exactly where the enemy would come from and in what strength. Battle 2 is much more random, with setup zones being roughly 200x1200 meters in size IIRC, slightly more random events, and spottier intelligence. I can assure you that from testing Battle 2 over a dozen times, I have recieved even from the highly predicatable computer "a suprise a minute". There are just so many different things that can be done in battle 2, that I do not think mirroring the games would affect the outcome of the battle.
2) Getting the force mixxes for battle 2 was orders of magnitude more complicated that battle 1, with over a dozen units being added/removed over the course of a couple of weeks. While all parties involved believe that balance has finally been achieved, we're not exactly so confident that we'd take the plunge on this scenario. In essence, the battle it represents was just about a walkover for one of the sides, and our more balanced version has had too many instances when that is exactly what happens. We think all the issues have been solved, but the hinge factor is too great with this scenario, IMHO.
To satiate all parties, Battles 3 and 4 will not be mirrored. One person of each pair will be randomly selected and given the setup file for the battle. If the scores are highly in favor of one side or the other, Battles 3 and 4 will be combined in scoring for the final winners of the tournament. However, if battles 3 & 4 come out pretty balanced as far as mean score for each side, battle 5 will be non-mirrored as well.
