View Full Version : Green hulls?

I've seen several illustrations of Russian ships of the RJW era with hulls painted green below the waterline. That is how Aurora now appears. I've also seen several illustrations with the usual red hulls, as appear in-game. I think the green hulls are more striking. Are they authentic for the era, and do any appear in-game?

The explanation is very simple.
In the time of RJW Russian navy used the special paint named "International" from Goltzaphel firm. This red paint were more corrosive-protected than other and the most ships on the Far East were painted by this paint to protect ships from corrosion and sea shells in the warm seas.
For example the Retvisan battleship painted by green paint in USA was repaint to red after she arrived at PA.
On the Baltic such problem did not exist (cold sea) and the green paint mostly used.
Some ships also had the copper outer layer on the hulls below waterline for protection and the such ships were not painted at all.

Thanks very much for the informative reply! I appreciate the utility of the more protective red paint but I like the look of the green better. Maybe Norm will give us a green Easter Egg if we ask nice - please? :halo:

On the color of the paint they put lead or zinc or both to help stop rust and things. One type was two colors. But mostly gray, red , and green. I looked up the type of ship paints for the time.

Yes, it was released about a year ago. My friends from Russia kindly sent me DVD and I watched it with great interest - the plot is a based on a real history events, but with a mixture of so-called "alternative" history and small portion of science fiction and mistico elements.
The action starts before the WWI and goes through the war to revolution and beginning of the civil war. There are some references in the movie to Russian-Japanese war as well because one of the main characters (according to the story) was a POW and lived in Japan for a while before he returned back to Russia. Anyway it's something new and interesting to watch and 3D graphic elements implemented in the footage help to create immersion into the atmosphere of the events.
Unfortunately the are no english subtitles on the disk and probably the movie has never been translated into english.

Very good film. One of my favorites;)
Unfortunately, one of the main actors has died recently.
The film contains a lot of CG episodes.
