View Full Version : Varyag at Chempulo
According to my sources Varyag could only make 14 knots at Chempulo due to boiler trouble. Might explain a bit why she didn't run away IRL like she does in game.
I'm not sure about the status of Varyag, but one clear difference in the game is that the real life Japanese ships were in harbour with the Varyag and then left - they didn't arrive from at sea.
For some interesting observations on the battle (and a demonstration of how history isn't always as reported) see:

No, my sources say that the japanese ships left the port in the morning. The port being an international holding and there were italian, french and british cruisers there whose captains opposed a battle being fought inside the port.
The japanese commander sent an ultimatum to cpt. Rudin telling him that if he didn't leave the port by noon he would come after him inside the port.

Richard Connaughton writes that the Japanese force was in harbour with Varyag at Chempulo, but left after issuing an ultimatum to Varyag's captain advising him to come out of the harbour or to surrender. If the Russians did nothing and stayed in the harbour, then the Japanese threatened to come into the harbour and fight despite the neutral ships being there.
The Japanese ships left Chempulo and later met the Varyag force outside Chempulo.
Superb contemporary photos of the Chemulpo incident and loss of Varyag and Koreyets in those photos linked above by Mobeer

The amazing thing is that the Japanese were able to get Varyag afloat and serviceable again :).

It seems that the "Koreiec" 3d model needs repainting in the game...
Great pics!
And again water on the mills of those, who ask for more smoke in the game, when looking at the pics of Koreyets (spelling?) blowing up. (I know, it will probably kill FPS, but how about an option for those with High-end machines?)
