View Full Version : Getting close on my scenario.
After ten months, three spiral notebooks, some eleven or so references, countless hours browsing The Axis History, and Feldgrau sites, limited playtesting has started. I have mainly been running the II SS Panzer and III Panzer Corps sectors.

Night of 5 July
II SS Panzer Corps Sector
With heavy support from the Luftwaffe, Leibstandarte's Panzer Group completes it's penatration of the first soviet defensive belt between the 52nd Gds and 375th Rifle Divisions. Exploits north, bypassing Bykovka to the west, reaching the 6th Gds Army's second defensive belt at Pokrovka. 11th Panzer supporting on the left, with SS Das Riech supporting to the east.
Corps Raus/ III Panzer Corps Sector
The 320th Infantry with 7th Panzer in support, attempts to expand its bridgehead to the northeast, south of Maslovo Pristani, against stubborn resistance from the 72nd Guards Rifle Division.
Mid Morning 6 July 1943 (Village of Yakovlevo)
Panzer Battle Group of SS Leibstandarte with elements of SS Das Reich and heavy Luftwaffe support, conducts a deliberate assault against fortified positions of the 51st Guards Rifle Division. In an attempt to gain a lodgement into 6th Guards Army's second defensive belt.

48th Panzer Corps Sector; 6 July 43 (AM)
48th Panzer Corps opened the intial assault on a narrow attack sector centered on the village of Gertsovka. Assault groups of the Gross Deutschland and 3rd Panzer divisions attacked abreast at the junction of the 71st and 67th Guards Rifle Divisions on a northwesterly axis. The 332nd and 167th Infantry Divisions supported on the left and right, respectively.
The initial assaults were met with fierce resistance, but a lodgement into 22nd Rifle Corps forward positions was established by late afternoon on the 5th. The supporting assault by the 167th Infantry against the high ground west of Cherkasskoe initially stalled. The Heights were finally seized late afternoon on the 5th. Success was found with the commitment of a motorised infantry group from Gross Deutschland supported by assault guns.
Battle Groups of the GD and 3rd Panzer Divisions continued their attacks in an attempt to envelop the 67th Guards right wing. A clear breakthrough was achieved late night on the 5th and Kampf Groups of both divisions exploited north. By early morning on the 6th, crossings had been seized over the Pena River 5km south of Berezovka. Reports indicate that the Soviet 31st Tank Corps has moved into the area northwest of Berezovka.
This is the sector that I wanted to pay particular attention to the German left flank. Historically one on the reasons for the German defeat during Citadel, was their lack of infantry. The Panzer Corps continually had to peel off their motorised infantry and other mobile units to guard their flanks. This robbed them of units that could be used in the Corps main effort. An example would be in the II SS Panzer sector. Here the Corps had to commit the entire Totenkopf Division to guard the Corps right flank until the 167th could be freed up. Therefore instead of having Totenkopf exploit SS Das Reich's and Leibstandarte's success, it was tied down guarding the flank. A job for a standard Infantry Division.
So far with ten turns played in this short playtest, the above effect seems to be happening again. Which is what I wanted. I want the German player to be worried about his flanks and to have a constant struggle/frustration to gain operational freedom of maneuver for his mobile units. This battle was essenitally a deliberate assault against a prepared defense deployed in depth.
I set the attrition divider at 15, which seems to be good so far. Supply stockpile is 18 and 20 for the Germans and soviets respectively. A 150% movement bias for the Germans has pretty much mirrored the tempo historically. It remains to be seen as to whether my phasing in of Soviet air units will mirror the historical air war over the sector. Historically the Soviets had air parity by 10 July. By that time, the Germans could only gain superiority over their main axis if they surged their aircraft. Also units proficiencies seem to be on the mark, so far. The Germans were historically very good at getting repaired tanks back into action during this offensive. How to mirror this remains to be seen.
Historically the offensive began early morning on the 5th of July. Turn 1 of this scenario begins early morning of the 4th. This allows four turns for the Germans to reposition units for different strategies.
Still yet to do are the events and a few theater options for the Germans.
A few (possible) Theater options for the Germans;
-Commitment of 24th Panzer Corps
-Countermand the historical transfer of half of Army Group South's air-power to 9th Army in the northern axis
-Request Infantry Reserves from OKH; 3 Regimental Kampf Groups and possible Security Division.
The Soviet player is restricted to manning the first two historical defensive belts. They will have unlimited control over there Tank, Mech, and follow-on Rifle Corps', which will come into play on a timed basis. As well as independent Corps and Army units. Trying to make it as hair raising as it historically was for the Soviets. I'm looking at victory levels being determined by using the German high water mark as a baseline.
Any suggestions on Theater Options/ Events or whatever else are welcomed please.
This looks like my kind of scenario. How is it progressing? Is it being converted to TOAW 3?

... Is it being converted to TOAW 3?
I second that question...

That sounds like too much work (400 turns worth), maybe I'll find some new kids on the block I can pick on :clown:
Sorry guys, between work, a 1.5 year old, and other BS it's coming along slowly.
Yes it will be converted to TOAW 3.
My biggest delemma is when and how the german player can commit 24th Panzer Corps. Currently looking at using an EEV.
It's a tough fight for the Germans. A lot of the problems the Germans faced in the offensive (historically) have manifested themselves in the scenario. I believe I have pretty much mirrored the historical flavor of the southern axis of Citadel. So the baseline is established. But the final German strategy is up to the player of course. They did make some terrible tactical and operational blunders.
I'm tweaking stuff like replacement rates. i.e. At 1% replacements, the Soviets have a replacement rate of 138 rifle squads. With a total count of 13, 791 assigned. That rate is too high for the time scale and unit size. I still have a few units to add to the OOB for the Soviets, but its pretty much done. Just some fine tuning on the map left to be done. The events are coming along well.
But we're plugging ahead slowly, but surely. This scenario is the first half. The northern axis will be included at a later date.
Good to hear that you're still working on it.

So we can decide not to attack at Kursk?

You are correct among other things. I will be picking it up again here soon. I just transfered it to the new comp.
In other words, the offensive (the scenario) has lost momentum and I'm trying to get Army Group South HQ (the old lady) to release the XXIV panzer Corps (free time) to be commited in my sector.

You deserve a medal for this statement.
