I guess I'm man enough to admit that the AI just handed me my lunch in a campaign game battle. Things started out well, with my PA force of 5 BBs and 4 PCs cruising the Korean coast, sinking a lone auxiliary cruiser

2 cruisers

and a lone gunboat who was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As I was swinging by Assan Basin on my way home, I spotted a column of several DDs headed toward the basin. I gave chase, thinking that would mean fewer DDs to harass my mine-layers. As I got closer, a few more DDs appeared, and then as I neared the edge of the basin, the whole freaking Japanese fleet came steaming out to meet me.

There were 6 BBs, 4 PCs, and too many DDs and gunboats to count. I turned tail, hoping that the AI would lose interest and let me escape with only some damage.

It was not to be. I lost every single ship, in 3 separate battles.

I don't know if the AI is clever enough to have lured me in with those first few DDs, but that's what happened. A naval Cannae. :dead:

In retrospect, I should have fought it out and at least whittled down the enemy fleet. Now it looks like my PA boys will be hunting and scooting in small packs.

OUCH!

I had something similar happen to me once. I was going to mine Chemulpo but, because there's no way to control the arrival time of the MLs, I decided to send my whole battlefleet along as escort, in case they arrived in daylight. And then I met Togo and got wiped out :(.

You should have formed your battleships in line abreast. Thus your battleships would use all their aft turrets against the leading enemy ship.
Have managed to make it till the nightfall in such a formation. Those 16kt battleships really slow you down...

Hehehe, sounds like that old thing we used to do in Star Fleet Battles, where Federation cruisers would retreat in reverse while firing photon torpedos at their pursuers :D

Nice to see I'm not the only one to get caught by the old "Hidden battle line" trick. :)
