View Full Version : Campaign battles

I have a fast CA + DD group out on merchant raiding. On the way back, they meet 3 IJN cruisers. Fair enough, I outrun them.
Then, in a few hours another battle with the same ships. How the hell did they catch up? Just how many time do you need to boringly outrun a much slower force? On the 3rd battle, I just gave up... :(
And my ships are consistently steaming east from Korea towards PA in battles, chasing the IJN CAs!
Yeah, a lot of these problems would be fixed if the game took the final positions of the ships on the battle maps and transferred them directly to the campaign map. If you run away from a group to the north, you come out north of them on the campaign map. This would end the silly, "I'm sailing back to port in the north, see enemy ships, run away south, and end up north of them on the campaign map" thing. It would force you to try and figure out a way to get past them in the direction you need to sail rather than just running to whichever map edge is closer.

I agree, it's VERY annoying that TF positions seem to be randomized at end of every battle, and then at the start of the next.
I spend a lot of time carefully working my faster TF around the slower blockading enemy TF, so that by the time the 1st battle ends, I've gained at least 90^ of bearing towards my desired direction compared to where I started relative to the enemy. IOW, the 1st battle starts with me to the north and the enemy to the south. When it ends, I'm to the east and he's to the west.
But then the 2nd battle starts and I'm back north of the enemy in the same friggin' map hex. WTF?!?!?!? IMHO this battle really shouldn't have started AT ALL because I go away from the enemy last time, burning a whole buncha coal to do so thanks to the high speed necessary. Now I gotta burn a bunch more coal to do it all over again, reducing my effective range once I finally do get free of the enemy (3-5 battles later).
TF position just seems to be totally random. Sometimes you get past the enemy the 1st try, even if you run back north. Sometimes it takes 5 battles where you got past him to the south every single time, but keep finding him south of you again a few mintues/hours later.

ja,
maybe a engage/disengage decision from the player wouldn`t be bad, if your forces are capable of running away. IIRC there was such a feature in one of the SSI games.

The manual claims, that individual ship positions are calculated with 1m accuracy on the campaign map. Either this statement is false, or there is something totally wrong with this system. :surprise:
Slower TFs catch up easily with my faster TFs and I am getting annoying battles where nothing happens.
On the other hand the AI utterly fails to chase and destroy slower forces. I can regularly disengage TFs who are 2-3 kts faster than my own TF (but I also have to do that several times).
Another problem is, that when after sunset TFs can still be tracked by the enemy and in the morning I immediately get another battle
In its current state the campaign game is totally bogus.
