I am more and more seeing the light with respect to this tactics so vervently advocated by G.S. Just yesterday in my Tannenberg 1914 game as the Germans, I completely took out two brigades of Russian cavalry that way, in spite of their sitting on a hill. The first attack by a single cavalry battalion backed up by two artillery brigades (only supporting, not even direct fire) brought them into orange and red health, for 12% own losses; the second by an infantry battalion evaporated both, with negligible own casualties. Sure, it was only Russian cossacks, but still ... maximum gain for very little risk. And it left me with 80% of my turn too. :smoke:

Some advantages:

1) It should only use 1 round of combat.
2) It lets you see the enemy units' composition if you have detailed combat reports on.
3) You can adjust your attack as you see fit. Go in again at LA/ML or ratchet upward depending on how much you need the hex.
4) It minimizes your losses, plus particularly against infantry it allows the arty to do most of the 'talking', especially if you're using Direct Fire. And arty is really perhaps your most effective instrument against infantry, either to dig them out and/or cause damage.

Absolutely. Except it eats up supply like hell. My fortress guns in Tannenberg 1914 have contributed, so far (T7), to a 36 to 12 loss penalty ratio in my favour, but they're all down to orange health due to supply shortage. :surprise:
