View Full Version : Latest update has stuffed my game

I assume it is 1.009, it is the 5mb sized one anyway.

First of all it just deleted the exe so after the "update" there was no way to start the game.

So I had to reinstall, not a big deal - but the updater still does not work properly and I am now left with my game at version 1.000 and it wants to keep updating it but can't (it downloads, runs and starts but doesn't actually update the game version).

The only thing I can think of is that my game is installed in a different directory to the default - but this hasn't made a difference to any of the other updates.

UPDATE - I've downloaded the update at least 6 times now and I've saved a copy to see what's happening. When I open update.exe with winrar I can see the new executable but it will not extract like all the other files. If I try to extract it manually it first of all deletes the existing exe but doesn't write anything back. If I then try to drag and drop the exe into another folder it says "Cannot move file: cannot read from the source file or disk". Does anyone have any suggestons?

Reinstalled to the default directory, let the updater run - end result no exe to launch the game from.

This time I did get a better error message though,

Distant Guns: The Russo-Japanese War at Sea: DG_RJWp.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x7c911639" referenced memory at "0x001c79d5". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

It looks as though all the files update ok except for the executable?

It appears that something in your system is stopping the update from happening. This could be a firewall setting or a memory resident virus checker, etc.

The other possibility is that the update is getting corrupted during the download.

Just wanted to add that 1.009 updated OK for me and I don't have the game in the default location - I could see the installer see the game on the HDD and put the update in the right place.

First of all I'd like to say a big thank you for the quick response to my issue (as well as posting here I've been sending messages to the official help desk).

I am confident that my original install package is okay as I am able to reinstall the game over and over again with no problems and can play the 1.000 version.

It does seem like the autoupdates are being corrupted during download (the first update is 5.345 mb). The update will run but not actually extract and overwrite the game exe file. If I open the update .exe with winrar it gives me a diagnostic message "Unexpected end of archive" and I can't repair or manually extract anything from the archive.

There is one other thing that has changed in between me running successful updates and now not being able to and that is the service from my ISP. In wonderful little NZ we have some of the crappest broadband services in the developed world thanks to years of stifled competition with one monopoly supplier. I am on a plan where I have a 2.5 Mbps connection which gets throttled back to dialup speeds once I exceed 1 GB of downloads in a month (ridiculously low download caps are part and parcel of adsl in NZ) - this is precisely the situation I'm in now and will be in for the next week.

I guess that I will just kick around with 1.000 until my connection is restored to its full speed and then try again.

Sounds like the update file may have become damaged in transit via your crappy ISP.

I have today had my first crashes with 1.009. Until yesterday I was playing on 1.006 as that was working fine and I had got 5 days into the Russian campaign and had fought about 11 battles all with no problem.

However with 1.009 I have now had 2 crashes in the last hour, both lockups when exiting a battle that ended while I was running on about 8x time clock (I was running away... :) )

Here is a screen from one of the crashes - they were the same. When I go back into the saved game that is the autosave at the end of the battle the campaign is corrupted and I have to go back to my last manually saved campaign file.

I just got that same error. Shame too as I was really kicking some Japanese behind. My Vladivostok force had just run roughshod through 22 torpedo boats, sinking 19 while 3 ran for the map edge. And my Battleship fleet had corndered and taken down a force of 8 protected cruisers and the Chen Yuen outside Port Arthur.

Would it be possible to have all the update files available for download from the same place as the main install file? This would mean I could at least get a mate to download the update file on their pc and then copy it onto a memstick and load it to my pc.

Actually, if the game is installed without a license (eg just on the 30 use demo) does the updater still check for the latest version? If it did then I could easily get someone else to install the demo and copy the update files as they download - they might even decide they like the game and end buy the full version!!!
