Hi I have a small graphics issue with the demo in that the small map view and the ships info graphic (the one when you hover the cursor over a ship) are a blurry blue and grey stripe! I have played with some settings and got the mini map to display ok.
See attached pic.

Almost looks like an uninitialized DX surface... not that that helps any. Perhaps a problem with the graphics card driver or something?

I'm also getting this in the demo. Did anyone ever figuire out what may be the cause of it?

You can easily run through a bunch of starts just trying different video setting trying to fix something like this. :-(

Thanks in advance!

Nobody has any ideas.

I have seen this before though. I remember that the fan made patch for the Battle of Britain game had a small map in the corner like Distant Guns! and it also looked like this at first. But there was something that you could toggle in the config screen that would eleminate it. I don't remember what it was but it did fix it.

I do like the game though and I'm not even sure I'd like having the map....we'll see.

Guys send the game data to the support page at Storm Eagle Studios, and they will help you with this, They are very good at getting to a issue quick.
Also I think it has something to do with the DX driver or with you video driver also.
Can you post what kind of video card you have so we can see what you got, we may get an idea if we know what is up?
Put your settings and any data that you have , the more we know the easier it is for us to help.

Hi thanks for the replies.
The mini map seems ok now after some fiddling although the ship graphic in the circle still doesnt work.
What files do you need to be sent?

These are the two main files that are in your Distant Guns folder, :

game_log.txt

saved_game_log.txt

Attach these two to your email to the support people. They will look at what you have and get you on the road.
Write what you think may have happend or what you think they should know in the email. They are very good at getting right on an issue.

Hi Peter

Could you tell me what you did to get the minimap to display right? Maybe you've found something that would help me.

Thanks in advance!

Harvester what do you have going on with your game? Let me know and I will see if I can help. Also make sure that you send the files that are needed to support. They will help also.
Let me know and I will do what I can to help or get you help.

Hi Daedalus

Thanks for the offer. I've already sent email/files to support and I'm waiting for a reply. I've attached a screenshot of the problem

Graphics card is a ti4200. I've been trying all the drivers I could find and nothing has changed.

Other than changing drivers I can't think of anything else to try. Maybe my graphics card just suks. :D

Hi Harvester,
Our problems seem similar in that they minmap and small graphics in the circle are mucked up. Although they display differently. I also sent my data to the support email at SES.
I just put all my graphics settings to low and then increased them one by one until I got the best graphics I could. I can even see the crew on the ships but I cant get the graphics in the circle to appear!!
I have a toshiba laptop with a 32Mb Nvidia graphics card and 512 ram and direct X 9.0c (probably the OLD 9.0c as I havent updated it since it came out!).

Your video card only having 32MB could be causig your problem. The game really needs 128MB of video ram to display everything. If you set the graphics too high, and you dont have enough video ram, you force Windows to cache everything through phyical and virtual ram. THis slows down the throughput and can result in graphic anomolies.

You may have to play at a lower resolution or cut the animated waves and damage settings to minimum.

Or buy a new vid card. 128Mb cards no longer break the bank these days. Some cheap deals around.

yep more memory would help....BUT if you can tell me of a laptop that allows upgrades to the videocard (either addition of more memory, driver updates or replacements) then let me know (any manufacturers listening??) and I will buy it!
Otherwise I will have to play on my desktop computer.

Sorry, didn't take note it was a laptop. You're probably stuck with the performaance issue then. As Jim suggests it looks like you'll have to forgo some of the graphic details.

So, I can turn down the video settings and lose the damage, wave and crew details in order to gain a picture of a ship in the circle?

Can you go into your video options and set a side more ram for your video. Some laptops allow that. You might check and see, as if you can it will help if you have enough ram.

My card does have 128mb of memory on it and it looks the same.

Here is what I've tried so far:

updated directx 9c
turned down/off acceleration
tried various different vid drivers with complete uninstall between
different resolutions/monitor refresh rates
banged the computer/monitor on the side

nothing seems to help. There's a conflict somewhere.

BTW, I remember another game causing the same problem. It was The Battle of Britain whith the fan made patch installed. It also had a small map in the corner of screen that wouldn't display right but there was something that you could change in the config screen that would fix it. I'm almost tempted to reinstall it just to see what the fix toggled.

Oh well....

Problem Solved!!!!

I spent some time tonight trying more nvidia drivers and I found one that fixed the graphics problem I was having in the demo/game. The magic drivers were v 81.95 and they can be dl'd from nvidia's site.

Graphics card is ti4200...

I realize this may work only on my particular system, but I thought I'd post it just in case anyone else is having the same problems.

BTW, Thanks for a great game!

BTW #2, Please include a readme file in the patches so that we know what was fixed.

This maybe an issue if youre trying to run the game on a laptop. When i originally tried the demo on my Toshiba, the same problem occured. However, on my Desktop PC (although its worse than the laptop) the game runs fine.

This has also happened with some other games before, where graphics did not display properly on the laptop, but were ok on the Desktop system
