I've been trying out the demo as both the Japanese and Russians. As the Japanese, the game works fine since the battle if over in a short period.

But as the Russians, most games end in a crash to desktop:mad: . I try to take the Russians west then north, seeeking the points promised in the battle description for reaching Vladivostock. I head north for four or five game hours and the battle map reloads successfully a few times. But the crash to desktop always turns up after a few too many re-centerings.

Does anyone else have problems like this?

Is there anyway to save progress during the battle? This would help a lot when seeking to flee.

There is indeed a way to save within a battle (in the options tab). In fact, I have recently sent a save to SES that seems to have just the crash you are experiancing.

I would first verify you have the lastest video drivers and running direct X- 9.0c

You may want to delete the file DG.cfg in the C:\Program Files\Storm Eagle Studios\Distant Guns directory, this will reset your video options. I know this fixed my problems (my video card or driver didn't like something in the options that was set or something I changed).

Hmm...I was getting exactly the opposite. I played as the russians many times with no issues, but have had lots of crashes playing as the Japanese.

I did manage to finish one battle as the Japanese though, and it was quite interesting. The Russians had turned to the east and I was trailing a bit, on a parallel course trading broadsides the whole way. I went off to refine my protected cruisers orders to attempt to get them up as fast as possible, and when I switched back, the Russians had apparently been pounded enough since they had made a sharp turn north. Since I was away and not in control, they plunged pretty much straight through my line, which scattered my ships and brought all of the Russians undamaged starboard side guns into play against the number two ship in my ex-line. They took her down and continued north, but luckily for me, had suffered enough damage that I was able to track them down and destroy them. It was an interesting tactic though, at least against an unaware admiral like myself. :)
