View Full Version : Throttle frame rate

I got several crashes when playing DG battles. After some monitoring I found out that my video card is running very hot.
A lot of players experienced this when playing Galactic Civilizations too; With frame rates over the 100 the newer video cards where overheating because they were being pushed too hard.

Just as Stardock did (Throttle frame rate stopped these video card that were running so hot they crashed the system from from processing more than was needed to max out Galciv2 graphics), is it possible to implend a throttle frame rate option for Distant guns to keep the frame rates under the 120-100? Say 60 FPS or so.

Would enabling vsync have the desired affect?

Hallo,

For DG I have Vsync selected so theoritically yes.
My monitor is using a refresh rate of 85Hz and with VSYNC enabled, I will theoretically never exceed 85fps. However I'm getting Framerates of 100-120 and higher.

Is your card overclocked ? If so this could explain why the card is getting hot. What temps are you getting on the gpu ?

I stand corrected on the Vsync issue. As I wrote I had it enabled but checked it out and saw for Distant guns I let Tray Tools override it. My fault, sorry.

To the best of my knowledge, enabling vsync will always limit your frame rate to your monitor refresh rate. Playing without vsync on can also result in the occasional transient graphics glitch, if the screen refresh occurs during a render operation. The only time I ever turn vsynch off is during profile runs, when I am trying to gauge where the process is spending its time.

I am not familiar with frame rate related heating issues. Sounds a bit goofy. But if you need to limit your frame rate, vsync "on" should do it.

Sometimes the card overheating issue can be due partly to ventilation issues in the system. Make sure you have decent airflow with your fans. I found a fan that goes into a pci slot, and was able to put that under my video card last year. In addition I made sure I had all operational fans. I haven't run into any issues since. Also make sure the lil' fan on the card is working. On some it is possible to replace them.
