View Full Version : Wreck of "Graf Zeppelin" located off Polish coast.
Sorry for writing it here, but once on this forum I had an interesting discussion about wrecks near the Polish Coast.
Lately Polish oil company "Petrobaltic" has located a 250-meter long wreck 30 miles to the north of Wladyslawowo (base of the Hela Peninsula). Polish Navy, after sending a hydrographical vessel to inspect the wreck, confirmed today that it is the wreck of the German aircraft carrier "Graf Zeppelin".
It`s great, because it`s a naval history and every ship, especially as Graf Zeppelin, is a peace of naval history.I think it will be very hard and interesting operation to pick up the ship.

Wow, that's cool! I've wondered where she ended up after disappearing while being towed to then-Leningrad for scrap. Did the survey confirm that she hit a leftover mine, as per the generally accepted theory?

I have thought that the generally acceptet theory was that she was sunk during target practice in August 1947. Two Russian authors described the sinking in detail in an article published in "Taifun" magazine in late 1990s.
The wreck stands on even keel at the depth of 87 meters, some 30 miles to the north of Wladyslawowo.
Here're the links to sonar photos on the Polish Navy official website:

Well, here's some article in Russian; at the bottom of the page there are photographs taken while "Graf Zeppelin" is being with torpedoes and bombs:
