View Full Version : Headquarters
Hi
I have contacted my opponent and is waiting for him to make his first move.
Still all quite on the beaches... I seem to have plenty of time to prepare the defense, reading up on all sorts of rules and trying a few more scenarios against Elmer. Think I'm getting most of it now, much thanks to you guys here in this forum! I'm sure I will find things to do wrong as soon as the attack comes however. So many things to keep track of.
Well one thing I am not able to find in the manual is what to do with my HQs. They help in resupplying units of the same formation in adjacent hexes, right? But they also seem to have some kind of effect on combat. I think I was able to order one to attack once, at a range of two. Are there sometimes artillery included in the HQ units? Can they do any other good things?
Some HQ's have artillery. I think they may also give a moral bonus to units under their command in nearby hexes.
I am not positive on that, though.
Hi Pelle, welcome to toaw and szo:toast: .
I try to answer your questions, i'm sure GenStaff will have something to say, too.
HQs help adjacent friendly units to gain a 50% boost of supply ;afaik it's not limited to the own formation, but depends on the support levels. Sometimes artillery is included in the HQs and it may support any combat in range if dug in (D, E, F) or in reserve mode (T,L). HQs also may help to disengage from the enemy if you stack them with the unit(s) you want to retreat and leave it there until the hex has been evacuated and retreat it as the last one. The HQ disengages without being shot at if the location to where it retreats is occupied by a friendly unit. Otherwise it bears a certain risk.
If a HQ unit is destroyed this will have negative effects on the supply distribution of the affected formation and on command and control, afaik know those formations tend to reorganize more often. These negative effects occur only if the destroyed HQ has support squads (->supply disruption) and/or Command groups (->Command and control) assigned. Or if the HQ loses part of (only with support squads) or the entire (command group) respective equipment.
It's all in the manual, but feel free to ask.

I'll be scenario-specific here, because in some scenarios they contain command and supply squads, though not here. That's another story.
I try to keep them to the rear to help with supply, combat to an extent though that's not a priority, and disengagement. You can read up on all these issues to do with term 'HQ' or 'Headquarters' in the manual.
In practice in this scenario, I try to keep them in the rear but providing supply benefit to as many units as possible. If one of my HQs is found the the HKL it's because the Allies made it so, not me. That means they usually start a turn 1 or more hexes behind the front, usually 1 because I do want the combat boost too. If you look at my game versus Elmer, you'll maybe get an idea of what I mean.
Hope this helps.
A couple of times I have caught an Allied HQ in the open and have been able to force it to retreat many times.
What does this due to the formation of the HQ? Do they go into reorganization or?

I kind of back into this in reverse. I keep mine safe where I can, always 1 hex or more behind the lines so I get the supply and combat benefits. In reverse if you kill one of theirs, you deny the enemy exactly the same benefits.
Other than that I'd refer you to the manual on 'HQ', 'Headquarters' or 'Reorganization', since I just don't remember other than at a point in the past I read up on all this, and the result was my thoughts on this as above.
This is for 2WIN only. There are scenarios that use HQs to determine command/control and supply distribution efficiency, but that's another story, though it's also described in the manual.
Hope this helps.
Ok. Thanks! I will need to spend some more time with the manual, yes.
