What's it good for? Can it be used on its own? Should it be in the frontlines? Thanks.

It's a useful AT and AP unit. Take the AG/352 Inf with SP Guns. Compare the individual equipment with a unit that has PzKwIVHs for example, like 21 Pz Div Armor units. The AT and AP ratings of all 3 pieces of equipment is identical.
I never stack them on their own if I can avoid it. Combined Arms is the way to go IMO in a scenario like this, I break them down and spread them around preferably in front of enemy armor and dug in to try and slow them down. I will attack with them on their own, but usually I use infantry in the open and not dug in as a baseline for an attack and work up from there with various factors- how critical etc...
I generally put pure armor in open hexes or woods or hills, never bocage and rarely urban unless I need to as an attack springboard. But I do put SP guns in urban locations with infantry. I put both in the frontlines. Sometimes I put one behind on TR to provide a 'surprise', especially if against infantry or armor attacking from open hexes.
Take a look at my dispositions versus Elmer to get an idea of what I think is best.
Hope this helps.
