View Full Version : My Advice!
I played German in last War in West Front tournament and I won
in UTAH area, destroy all bridges on merderet river and run counter attacks against the Airbornes, in north utah area do not try to enter contact at all cost with US, no, buid an entrenched line on the hill ridge and on south of it with many line of defense, hold and wait for reinforcements
In omaha same, try to create a dense line along the south river, destroy all bridges, in Gold juno sword, same create a strong defense line on hills lines
Nesr the Pegasus bridge try to repulse the Brits and to recover ownership of the bridge and best destroy it
Then wait for reinforcements

To win is not impossible, but i think it's almost impossible to throw them back into the sea.
Attached a pic of the area northwest of Utah beach and marked possible defence lines, the first in the bocage area, which could fall one hex back and would still be in good defensible terrain and the second one in the hills a few kilometres further north. There are fortified points and villages which also give a good defence bonus, especially when bombed and shelled to ruins. I am not sure with the tankdestroyer deployment, but US armour should pay a high price for trying to advance through this small open area. Anyone who disagrees please comment.
In my last game of 2innorm against Chowee i was able to delay him long enough on this front that he reached the outskirts of Cherbourg only on turn12. And this without having reinforced the Cotentin at all (with units from further south).
Bridge blowing: Yes. Blow all you can. And counterattack the airbornes west of the Merderet. With the bridges blown and carefull planning it could be possible to trap them, at least for a while.
This all depends certainly on your opponents opening moves, when i see Jamiams turn 1 this all would make less sense.
Edit: Screenshot from ACoW version before allied moves.

Agree. It is important to delay the enemy long enough south of Omaha until the PanzerLehr and more Fallschirmjägers etc. appear. There is a lot of space to fall back, but be aware of the high movement points in this scen.
Under all circumstances, hold Carentan!
Agree on Pegasus bridge. In one game i was able to retake it with a Panzer Bn and even held it until the end of the game. Okay, it was a bit lucky, but...
I would deploy the SS in the open southwest of Caen, they are tough bastards and should be able to hold against the allied assault.
More 0.02 cents....
Edit: Maybe we should move this all in a new thread here in the Axis subforum: General defence discussion or sth. like that. Has Mark aka Heinz57 admin rights in the workshop forum?
I've no admin rights, just access to both allied/axis forums. Better to discuss generic strategies in the open forums, and Axis 2WIN strategies here. Eventually, both teams will likely discuss both Axis/Allied strategies.
For the Axis - examine where the concentration of VP's are relative to your forces. Review the AAR's. Three tips:
1. When you look at and start moving units to form defensive lines, do it incrementally to make sure you have enough MP's to get where they are going - probably starting with the units furthest away to see where they can reach, gradually moving the units closest to your intended line. Where you have engineers, move it into one hex - let the unit there dig in; move the engineer to the next hex - let that unit dig in, etc. This way, 1 engineer unit can help 2 or more units reach fortified status faster.
2. When interdiction % is high, turn on the weather map - try to move along routes with the best cloud cover. You will still get interdiction hits, but they will be at reduced strength, and it will increase the chance of your units reaching their intended destination with higher readiness and fewer losses.
3. Keep you artillery away from the front lines while trying to maximize their area coverage, and where possible, stack it with a unit not susceptible to over-runs. Further, don't stack too much artillery in one place. Allied Battleships and Aircraft can strike them with relative impunity and inflict significant losses in doing so, with a chance of knocking them out of entrenched or tactical mode.
Small tips, but they add up.

As AA fire now is working, it could also help to stack your unit(s) with an AA Unit and select group movement. Combined with a 'safe' route this might work well.
Interdiction between 10-15% hasn't been uncommon in what i've seen from that scenario under ACoW.

It still feels gamey to me, but you can also run the AA units back and forth to draw off interdiction fire before moving. IIRC, Jamiam seems to feel it's justifiable, and it's not in the house rules, so I have no compuction about using tactics like that.:clown:
